Title: Can I change my render entry? :D
Post by: Warlock on December 25, 2001, 10:41:00 pm
Concept: Realistic Cockpit HUD view

Time to render 3d models and backdrop: 30 min

Time to compile touch ups to glows, overlapped Nebula effect and HUD addons in photoshop: 3 hours 15 min

Cigerettes consumed: 1/2 pack leaving to purchase more after I post this :P.

Coffee utilized to keep me from destroying the CPU after 15 PS crashes and loses of 15 layers: 2 pots

(http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) Enjoy! I feel this is my best yet

I saved the glittero file I used for the back drop on the render itself,..removed all stars,..layer with a 45% opacity to give it a slight cloudy effect.

I like the overall 'grainy' look of this pic. It's like the blackbox recording of the pilot HUD, recovered after Alpha One failed to return from the mission.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Oh oops  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Alot of that had to be copied over from an old screenshot. For some reason about 80% of the base fs2 images in the VP for the hud when saved from ANI format to BMP get warped hellabad  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

But I was generally happy even with the blur,..and after realizing one thing...if you were actually IN a GTVA fighter,..your hud to be in this format would be basically a hlo-image projected onto the cockpit screen (which isn't far off since a few highdollar cars have guages done that way) which tend to be a little blurry.

I like it, you need some better material effects on the fighters though, are they real renders (ie done in TS, 3DS, ect...)

oh, don't smooth them, it screws up the textures, just make some alpha chanel effects for reflectance and glows (the lights on the sides not the engines), make a  chanel for shinines (use chrome and conductor) and glows (use translucent plastic) and a bump map at the least. I think I have the files alredy (if I don't I can make them easily enough) if you want I can try and put them up somewere.

yes, but in fact, it's just a HUD like on any fighters...  I imagine more something like the pilots of rafales have, all the display is directly shown in the helmet, so they always have all the infos in front of them, even if they look between their feet ("damn immelmann! my coffee!")

So what you're saying is that the Helmet Cal wears is French?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Nah, the rafale one is better   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif):

On the following pic, you can see the display on the helmet's glass:
Ok, it's not pretty, but it's damn cool anyway   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

So Cal just wears a more up to date one that doesn't need all that extra bulk.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) After all, most of that helmet is cranial armor. By the time Cal needs an actual HELMET in deep space, he's already in enough trouble that the cranial armor won't help.

Sound concept based on existing tech...flaw,..FS pilot images thus far mostly show pilots active with OUT a face plate on their helmets  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Retina projected huds?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Actually, if you look in the  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) cockpit render, they've used the old US Navy fighter HUD style.
