Title: My second ship
Post by: Admiral Cheater on January 09, 2007, 03:24:19 am
It's some sort of interceptor/superiority fighter. I haven't finished the texture yet but I'm working on it. What do you guys think so far?

The missile pods break the otherwise nice aerodynamic form. And the nose is too sharp and simple and thus is in contrast to the more detailed rear.

Pretty good overall.

Looks nice, my only concern is the wings, which are something I struggle with too, the front of the wings looks very thick.

That said, looks like a good clean model, possible a bit low-poly, but that does, admittedly, give the advantage that it would take an awful lot of them on screen to cause any kind of speed hit.

Call me a purist, but wings arent necessary in space at all unless you intend to make it an atmospheric fighter as well. I know I know, they DO look good as well as the fighter itself. Good job!

Wings in space are useful for hanging ordinance :)

Anyway, it looks good, but beef up the detail on the front. Also, to create a simple, low poly leading edge for the wing, simply extrude the edge of the wing (to create a secondary set of points), and scale the secondary points so they're close together (not sure if that's how that works in that program, though).

My take:

Have the missile pods swept back slightly, but move the small 2 outboard missile ports, further back under the wing.  It looks like it could be an Athena-light.  Something that's like a fighter, but designed to carry light bombs.  The larger missile bays are for the bombs, and the smaller bays (the ones I suggested you move further back under the fuselage) are for the defensive, anti-fighter missiles.  Primaries could either be in that gap between the main missile bays and the inner fuselage, or perhaps in a belly tray (like the de Haviland Vampire).

All in all, I like the design, though it could use some more details (but since this is your 2nd fighter, I wouldn't demand HTL or something).  I might suggest that you add a slight anhedral to the horizontal tailplanes.  Could we get a ventral, rear shot to see how the engine(s) are mounted?

Thanks for all the comments

I have continued to work on the texture but I still need to do the underside and the rear.

What do you think?

I would modify the model to make it look more sleek and stuff but changing it messes up the UV map.

Nice

Don't worry about the UV map at this stage of modeling (unless you decide to make certain parts modular, and even then it don't matter as they would use seperate maps)

I only have one comment and 2 suggestions.

Comment: That split V area between the fuselage and wing on the inside edge of the rocket pods should go, it  looks odd.

Suggestions: (1) Extend the nose like ahair, just long enough to get rid of that sharp point and make it visibly rounded off. Unless you're ramming someone it doesn't seem to fit this style.

(2) Loose the two extra pod holes on top, it makes it look like you lost your wing edge there. Pods generaly look more streamlined if they are against a hull with angled panels, might want to try that or set them a bit away and fix the inside edge of the top wing surface (the gap).

looks good in general though.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

I decided to get rid of the split between the fuselage and wing and turn it into a missile launcher, round the nose a bit and replace the old missile pods with guns to make it look slightly more aerodynamic. It has no texture right now because I don't feel like fixing it up at the moment and want to know if there are anymore changes I should make to it before I do.

Does it look better? (http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/5056/spaceship2hh2.jpg)

Much better :)
I'd suggest doing something with the front of the wings to make them look a bit more detailed, though :)

Damn, I only had a few minutes ( I completely passed out today and got to go BASCK to work) ;D

Looks way better although now it seems you changed the whole cockpit itself? Or is that just cause the black part is not visible?

You still have that wing gap, but now in this squared off shape I think I can see where you're going... It's fine but I would still get rid of it.

Something like a bevel??? for the wing edges might help make them more detailed, but don't really worry about that , detail is covered a LOT by good texturing...

I slapped a good texture on Carl's 12poly (minus turrets) Borg Cube and they think its high poly... (its NOT ) ;D

l8ter!

For my suggested changes, I was thinking something more like this:

These two are half, top-view profiles of your ship on the left (before the most recently posted change) and my suggestions on the right.

BTW, what is that blocky bit on the top between the fins?  Is that the engine?  Either way, you may want to consider sloping the sides a bit.

After trying out Trivial Psychic's suggestion, I decided to play around with the model and managed to turn it onto another ship. Image (http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/2846/ship2sz7.jpg)

Trivial Psychic, I don't know what the big block is, I just thought it looked kinda neat with it.

Getter Robo G, I changed the cockpit by adding an extra set of verts. About the wing gap thingy, are you talking about getting rid of it completely (and have the pods and wings in the empty space) or filling it up with something else?

That new design resembles a fighter from Original BSG... some really old fighter design that was pre-Viper.

Ignore my posts, except for the V gap I liked your original design.. (hint you should keep all your original works on a folder and years later make it available as a "Model Dump".. Yay!!!

@ Getter Robo G
What's wrong with your other posts?

@ Trivial Psychic
Can you show me a picture of it?

The ship in the foreground is the one I was referring to.

What episode of BSG is that screencap from??? The nose, cockpit and lower engines are obviously original series Viper, but the rest???

"The Long Patrol"...

Starbuck in the Recon Viper (Super fast but UNARMED and flown mainly by an AI called C.O.R.A.) comes across a old type fighter harassing a frieghter.

The fighter type was used 200 or more years ago.

Starbuck helps the freighter out but no good deed goes unpunished and end up in a penal colony. Much haliraty ensues as his fellow inmates are descendants of the original perpetrators (like assault 32 and adulty 7). Starbuck becomes Robber (?) forget...

The cockpit exterior of Robber's shuttle is from a Catalina PBY flying boat.
