What the heck. I'll enter two:
The first is short wing of Misato class advanced interceptors and their home, a Roon class patrol vessel on patrol in an asteroid field. For scale, the Roon is about 1200m long, the Misatos are about 22m long (they're very close to the camera)
The second is Raindance Station, a naval repair facility, shipyard and rear command base. The facility is huge, with three cap-ship drydocks, and 18 drydocks for smaller vessels. If you look closely to the left of the star in the center, there is a flight of three Roon class patrol boats.

Which one? The Misatos or the Roon?
I do have to say, the Roon is probably my favorite of my large spaceship designs (except the Nate class carrier, but I deleted it's mesh by accident! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif))

One of each please (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
I do love the Roon thou! From that angle at least she's got a kinna "StarBlazer's" Look,...which was the old school Sci Fi that got me hooked on Anime (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I'll take a Starblazers ref as praise. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Seriously tho, if you saw the Roon at any other angle, it would lose that effect quickly. If you'd like, I'll post the URL to the series of renders from its first design (its ugly like... um... Its just bloody ugly) to the final incarnation. You'll lose that Starblazers feel, however.

It'd still look cool thou (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
i'm beating she's a bit far out of the 2k poly range thou eh?

The Roon comes in at 3086 plys. I can probably bring that down to 2200 polys just by removing hidden faces. I might be able to get it down under 2kpoly if really pressed.
[edit]Looking closely, I'm willing to bet that I could get her down to 1.5k polys. There's some nasty hidden polys in the turret barrels, as well as some places where there's coplanar adjacent polygons. That's just uncalled for. I think I'll rip the Roon apart in Lightwave and rebuild it. Maybe even mod it into IWar2 in place of the destroyer or cruiser. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

*First claim!*
Dude if you can get her that far down,..set the turrets as sub models of Barrel+base=turret glued to ship ,.....Can i use her in my FS2 mod???
Hell while I'm hooked.......heh....wanna make a Shivan mega cap for me? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (Hell I've asked everyone else (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif) )

Easily done. If you'd like to use her, I'd not mind. We'd have to think up a new name though. I'm not happy with 'Roon' so, if you want to user her, you can name her. I'll let you know how it goes.
If it matters, btw, its 4 forward mounted particle beams (these aren't gimbaled. They fire forward only) and 6 turrets (two dorsal, two ventral, and two mounted on either side of the engine section). Those long antennae are sensor booms and are retractable. She carries something like six short wings of fighters (a short wing in my head is 6 fighters, rather than the standard 18. don't ask. I don't know why).

No problem. In addition to my above edit, you could probably remove the sensor booms entirely and put gimbaled beam turrets there.
As for the Shivan thing, um... I dunno. I could give it a shot one of these days, I guess. I'm not certain I could design an appropriately Shivan vessel.

So you know, Warlock, I'm going to start poly-stripping the Roon tonight. If you've not picked a name yet, I'll probably name her 'Waterdancer' (inspired by the Volition Bravos which led to the Braavosi Waterdancers of Martin's A Game of Thrones books).
Shrike, the reason those Zaon renders look so good is lighting, textures and greeblies. The overall modelling is good, but where they shine is good lighting and excellent textures (the textrues make them feel solid to me). Then to top it off, extensive use of greeblies gives them that 'hi tech' look. These guys must have a massive rendering farm, if they turn out stuff like this regularly: doing greeblies in geometry instead of texture is math intensive. *heh*
Lucas knew not what he wrought when he unleashed the Star Destroyer design upon the world.

*hrm* That's hard to say.
There's only six asteroids. Those were spheres that I hit with a randomizer and then smoothed. I keep them saved on my hard drive to boolean together into other asteroids. that was what? 10m we'll say.
The Waterdancer (the larger ship) took about three days to go from original slap up to completion. That's another thing that was laying around on my hard drive.
The Misatos (the fighters) were what prompted that pic. They were the fourth in a series of ships that all used some common elements (the Waterdancer was the second and the Molly was the fifth). Those took two days.
Setting up that scene took an hour or two. Maybe more. If I had done all that work in one shot, it would likely have taken me about 5-7 days. In reality, that scene was built over the course of a month (since everything was modelled in isolation with no scenes in mind).

the fighters deserves a better mapping (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Thanks, Thunder. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Venom, I'd give the Misato a better mapping if I had the skill. I'm 100% hopeless with textures (why do you think the Iwar2 Molly is flat shaded? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)). Seriously, I'm trying to learn so that I make these things look good.
If you look carefully, btw, the mapping on the fighters is the exact same one as on the Waterdancer itself.
