Title: Problem with starting Prologue
Post by: Donatio on January 09, 2007, 11:36:13 am
Hi Guys,

I wanted to try your game but it won't let me:

wcsaga caused an Access Violation in module ntdll.dll at 001b:7c9206c3.
Exception handler called in FreeSpace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 1/5/2007 17:47:00.

Any ideas?

If you need some information about my system/hardware/software please let me know.

Thanks in advance!
Donatio

this is probably related to OpenAL. Read our Troubleshooting Guide for more information :)

Welcome to the HLP Station. Exits are located to the right, left, up, down, and 4th-dimensionally. However all of them are blocked, except the 4-d one, and no one's yet figured how to reach it. Somebody says there is anoter one in the 5th dimension: if you find it, let us know! In the event of a landing of any kind, you can and will be used as a flotation device. We are currently suffering from technical problems from time to time, which may cause the lights go out at any instance, and sometimes even the basic life support fails for some time. At these times, stay calm and composed; for these cases the station system automatically drops a computer from the roof above you with FSO installed and ready. They have independent power sources. Please keep all appendages within the installation at all times. Do not feed the resident Shivan Carl as he will become voracious and chew your leg off. You can find him in the ventilation duct. Throw him your lunch and hope he is not hungry and leaves you alone. Flamethrowers can be found under your seat but due to financial constraints have been re-filled with holy water. Phased Plasma rifles (40 watt range of course) can be found in storage lockers. To prevent act of n00b, however, these can only be opened by Moderators, Volition or a hyperintelligent shade of BluE. Please remember that any attempt to use the ASCII characters 0046h, 0053h, and 0033h in sequential order will result in you being trampled by the whole FreeSpace community. Your trampled remains will be fed to Carl so that the rest of us don't have to carry around so much food for lunch. If you shall go in the Vasudan section of the station and find a boxes labelled “Headz”, please don’t open them, unless you are a Vasudan. Trust me on this one.... In the event of catastrophic hull failure please board the nearest lifeboat which is pre-programmed for autonomous flight to our sister station the Game-Warden outpost. Thank you and enjoy your stay at Hard Light station as long as you will!

Hi, I had a very similar problem when starting WCS - a CTD related to ntdll.dll. Besides that I couldn't launch the game at all using the installed dektop shortcut. Nothing happened after I clicked it. The only way i could start it was through the launcher, but then again it CTDed on me right away.

Now after I've read and applied the troubleshooting tips (ie I installed openal though I had it installed before im sure, plus copied the files from system32 folder) I no longer  get a CTD but again, nothing happens whether I use the shortcut or the Launcher.

what gives? is this somehow related to my E-MU 0404 soundcard not supporting EAX? or my 1680x1050 WS Samsung monitor? Help please, I wanna try this out so bad...

Edit:

As a sidenote, Im trying to launch the game with the following command line (as appears in the launcher):

D:\Gamez\Wing Commander Saga Prologue\wcsaga.exe -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -missile_lighting -snd_preload  -ambient_factor 100

But shouldnt this line be added to the shortcut after I click Apply? Cuz it just doesnt. Either way I still cannot start the game from the launcher either.

Could you attach the autogenerated errorlog?

Why yes, but as I said it only concerns the ntdll.dll crash that was happening earlier and doesn't inlude anything else:

wcsaga caused an Access Violation in module ntdll.dll at 001b:7c9106c3.
Exception handler called in FreeSpace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 1/10/2007 07:46:42.

Now it's 2/10/2007 where I live and the log hasn't been updated since yesterday.

Delete the log and run the game again. It tends to append errors to the log rather than simply starting a new one.

Ok, I deleted it and upon launch I got the same CTD (whew at least it did something now! :) ) as yesterday - tried it 3 times, twice from the shortcut and once from the launcher, but it logged three identical errors.

OK I found out what the problem was - my E-MU 0404 soundcard indeed. After switching to Realtek onboard ALC850 no problems whatsoever. Go figure.

you might want to report this to the developers, so that this can be taken care of
