Title: My render contest submission
Post by: Stryke 9 on December 28, 2001, 09:28:00 pm
This is my first shot at using the Carrara engine- volumetric clouds look a lot cooler in animations, I suppose.

And the poem segment is from Frederik Pohl's "The Gold at the Starbow's End". I just thought it fit the NTF fic well.

Your Deimos is strangely cubical.

My Deimos is missing topside gun turrets. That's what it looks like without 'em.

There's a demon?

It's hardly visible, probably you need to eat more carrots to see it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

The textures on all of them are wrong, it's just that you can see the Deimos clearly.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
RDS and Carrara do this funky full-object wrapping thing that doesn't happen in TrueSpace, and I haven't even begun to understand the Carrara one. I did the best I could with it- the front thrusters and rear body are correct, or at least damn close. The top texturing object includes parts all over the ship, and that's why it's so funky.

And the Demon is supposed to be hard to see. The shadows get in the way of it being entirely clear, but I did a wasted Nebula in there where everything gets foggier as it gets farther out. The Demon is really just a goodie I threw in to see who could pick it out. This is LOD1, I think, I just couldn't get the turrets to move with the body the right way... without 3 hours of linking. Should I do another version with turrets, or leave bad enough alone?

you mean lod0, but I can assure you it's not, sorry. look at the engine section, for exemple, or the side of the ship, it's all vertical, lod0 is vertical on the bottom of the side, but goes to a light angle when you reach the highre part (I think I've never been that meaningless...)

Looks nice, if you could get some light bleeding into the shadows, that would be cool (because unless the light comes from one point only, not a star, it would kill the shadows after a while - they wouldn't be that straight).  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, I'm gonna have another shot at it, this time I think I'll try having the original rendered 3D shadows. Last time they didn't work, which really sucked since the image is nothing without them...

Here's the second try. I just gave up on making good shadows, the scene light isn't working...

Well, there was plenty of crap floating around in the FS nebula, wasn't there? And there was probably more after all the battles.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

So is this what the GTVA does with all of the human waste produced inside the warships? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I think that they store it in Cyclops torpedos  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

But come to think of it, where WOULD it go?

Come to think a little more of it, never mind!

Aight Steak, this is my entry, what there is of it... unless, of course, the render doesn't have to have anything to do with FS, in which case I've got another in mind...

Am I the only one with a brightly-lit scene here? Aw man, I want to be depressing too!

Next time I think I'll get the model imports and texturing done ahead of time...

Ooh! Nice render! I give it 84 out of 10, and award the creator a weekend with a drunk Jennifer Aniston!
