Guys:
I was playing the 'In the depths of Hell' series....the first two went by OK but when I began to play campaign 3, I ran into an error right as I started mission, "Operation Dagger 3"; a few seconds into this mission the following error pops up & crashes my game: :mad2:
Runtime Error!
Program:C:\Game\Freespace2\fs2_open_3_6_9-7dot9x.exe
abnormal program termination
Anybody know anything about this error? I was SO Looking forward to using those new 'slayer' torpedoes! :sigh:
thanks, ahead of time

Ah, the infamous Slayer bug returns! Seems to have gotten worse since I saw it last.
How recent is your copy of ITDOH3? The older versions had a table error that caused the Slayers to not show up, making the mission very very hard indeed (it didn't crash outright, though, which makes this error more interesting). I believe a fixed version was uploaded recently, but where to and how recently I can't remember.
Also: 3.6.9 Final is out now, you might want to upgrade to that.
-
Dark Hunter:
I downloaded episode 3 on 11/26/2006---IF you know of a more recent version of the ITDOH series of campaigns, could you shoot me a link?
RE: the FINAL version of 3-6-9...could you shoot me a link? The one I have (3_6_9_0) has that lovely graphic that just sort of walks you thru everything. & it even comes with some campaigns built in---it even gives you the option of picking & choosing your mods...
thanks ahead of time;

OK I am now using 3.6.9 Final...I still get that freaky error; any idea what I can do?

Same error? Hmm... sometimes stuff like this can be caused by a corrupt pilot file. Try restarting the campaign with a different pilot (this mission isn't too far in, I don't think).
EDIT: Did some looking into the missions, and you should already have used the Slayers in the mission beforehand (where you are chasing the Dis that escaped). You sure you have the right mission name?
EDIT2: Just tried the same mission myself, no problems on my end. Slayer torps aren't even in that mission, you use Trinities.
-
DARK:
OK, I downloaded a 'fresh' version of IDOH3 & created a new pilot to fly it; the mission to destroy the 'Dis' freighter ...First I have no options RE: Loading; I have those darned rockeye fire & forget missiles...anyhoo I kill the 'Dis' & it's cargo (I use the "CHEAT"); then I got to the mission to destroy the Shivan Installation's powercore...that's when the following error pops up:
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\games|FreeSpace2/fs2_open_3_6_9-RE8: exe
abnormal program termination
So...what say you RE: this? I have done the OTHER 3 & I REALLY want to finish THIS chapter;
TIA

***BTT***

That file name is not the one I'd expect for the Official release of 3.6.9.

Are you certain you got the final version? That looks like Release Candidate 8, which is not the final one. This (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44291.0.html) is the final version.
-
WHAT? ANOTHER version AFTER the FINAL ? ::) OK I'll give it a try;
NickM
-
OK...I downloaded the darned thing; WHERE do I unzip it to?
NickM
-
Main FS2 folder. Click the Browse button on the Launcher to select it.
-
:mad: FRAK! I unzipped the "Final" into my folder & used the launcher to choose IDOH3...SAME ERROR:
Runtime Error!
Program: C\games\FreeSpace2|fs_open_3_6_9-RC8.exe
Abnormal Program termination
I'm getting frustrated with this but I've played the other 3 so....what's next?

FS Open 3.6.9 Final is out...
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44291.0.html
EDIT: MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE CORRECT FSOpen .EXE FROM THE LAUNCHER
Sounds like you are choosing the old .exe

dude, seriously, use a little common sense. The filestring you're posting obviously says RC8.exe at the end - that indicates it's Release Candidate 8 which is not final.
-
To be honest I'm not certain that the final build will actually solve the problem but if it doesn't run the debug version that should have been in the same download and then attach (and I mean attach, not cut and paste!) your fs2_open.log to your next post.
-
:wtf: WHAT? THAT'S the problem? Wrong version? Well...smack me with a bag of rocks! OK I'm downloading 3_6_9 final as we speak; I clip the log when I'm done & let you know what's happening...

AAAAAAGGGGHHH! Forget about it! I'm uninstalling EVERYTHING & starting from scratch!
NickM

Good... I've a suggestion.
1) rename your FS2 directory to "oldfs2" or somewhat like that, that way you can compare later, and see what's wrong maybe.
2) ...
1st, un-install all Java runtime environments older than version 6 (not to be confused with version 5 update 6) - ie, if it doesn't say "Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6" in Add/Remove Programs (in Control Panel)
*RESTART COMPUTER*
2nd, install JRE 6: http://www.filehippo.com/download_java_runtime/tech/ (link to d'l is on right)
3rd, download & install: http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/java/javautilities/javautilities.exe
4th, download & run (double-click): http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/java/FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar
...
That should make you happy :)
Oh, when you run FreeSpaceOpenInstaller, tell it the folder you want your new FS2 install to be in, not the one you renamed.
PS If you have the retail CD's, follow these instructions first, to save time.
The Installer now includes Retail FS2. If you've already got the disks, these instructions will save you a lot of bandwidth:
1. Install FreeSpace 2 from your disks, if you haven't already. Install it to C:\Games\FreeSpace2.
2. Now, put disk 2 of FreeSpace 2 back into your CD drive.
3. Copy all the files with the extension of ".MVE" from the disk to the folder C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data\movies\ (create this folder if it doesn't exist)
4. Do the same thing for disk 3.
5. Use this patch (http://www.pxo.net/files/fs21x-12.exe) to patch your game to 1.2.
6. Put this file (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/installedversions.txt) in C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Installer\ (create this folder if it doesn't exist)
7. Get the Installer from below and run it.
-
OK...I reinstalled FS2 patched it to 1.2 AND dowloaded the latest installer from Tourey;
I still get the SAME error; except it oh so kindly points out the version is 3_6_9
Dang frustrating....
-
use the debug build that came with 3.6.9 and attach the log
-
I HATE to sound dense but I must ask how exactly do I do that? I'm sort of 'unhip' when it comes to computers? DO you mean that when I choose a mod I choose the debug build or do I go into my folder & click on the 'debug build' & go from there...don't worry, once I get this far I'm sure I'll be asking you how I get that log you want me to get;
TIA--I'll do my best!
NickM
-
At the top of the main launcher screen there is a target box with a Browse button next to it. It is here you select which build to use. Just hit Browse and then select the debug build.
-
Thanks...now where do I find that log & how do I get it here?
NickM
-
When the game crashes look in Freespace2\Data. Simply use the attach option when posting to add it.
-
Thanks...I'll go and crash my game right now....
NickM
-
Ooops! Maybe I should have done it THIS way....
TIA;

@NickM, click the "Modify" or "Edit" button near the top of your accidental post, highlight the stuff that you attached in your later post, delete it, and put EDIT: removed attached text or something like that. You could have done that in the first place to save you the trouble of re-posting. (put EDIT: removed blah blah, then "Additional Options" -> attach.)
For example:
EDIT: sorry about that... attached now.

jr2:
So...does this error log tell us what the problem with IDOH3 is & how I can solve it?
TIA
NickM
-
no idea. you'll have to wait for someone who actually can read that.
-
soz. -- Ask me how to fix your computer or install the game, not how to deal with the inner workings of FS SCP. I'm no good at coding. :doubt: :sigh:
-
No prob Jr2; I'll just wait for someone to eyeball the info & get back to me RE: what can be done...I've finished the OTHER 3 parts so I'm hoping to be able to complete chapter 3....I STILL wanna see what them slayer torpedoes can do!
NickM
-
Wrong log. The one I wanted is called FS2_Open.log and lives in your data folder.
-
K:
I keep getting the following error when I try to attach the log;
fs2_open.rar.log.
You cannot upload that type of file. The only allowed extensions are 7z,gz,rar,zip,gif,jpg,jpeg,png,txt,tbl,tbm,fsm,fs2,fsc,fc2.
NickM
PS: Maybe I can email it direct to you?
-
Just throw the log in a .zip file (in Windows, right click and Send To -> Compressed Folder) and attach it.
-
Crud! NOW I'm getting THIS error:
The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator.
NickM
-
... .rar.log? If you compressed it, it should be .log.rar
About the other problem, you could upload the file to someplace like FileShack or FileFront and post a link.
-
If that fails post the first 30 or so lines (Up to "Found x roots and y files") and the last 10.
