Sweet! That's really nice. And it shows that Bentusi trade capsules can do other things then just launch in mid-combat and get blown up  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

You know what I think - looks really good, nice one  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I wonder: Thorn, can you replace the textures on those ships with something more crisp? The  closest ship looks very fuzzy becuase of the low res texture.

Other than that, its gorgeous. Its just a touch bright for me to use as a background (but I will anyway  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)). Oh--and nice to see a peaceful scene.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

cool, time to replace wEvil wallpaper   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
bright and peaceful, I like   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
there's something faeric (sp?) with Homeworld ships, can't say what...

edit: using moderate bump settings could help making the pic more realistic

Faeric? You mean 'faery like'?

Well, me being my slow, dim-witted self, posted the wrong one..
That one was rendered without radiosity, this one with:
    (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/tap/renders/the%20trade%20I%20thumb.jpg)      ("http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/tap/renders/the%20trade%20I.jpg")

Aside from the yellow glaring on the left side, I think I liked it better before radiosity. It seems like some of the polygon edges are more distinct now, so the ship look s more like a model, rather than a ship.

I hope I'm making sense.

Well, the glaring is intentional, the inside bit of Bentusi ships is supposed to be bright...
Youre right about the edges though...
Hmm...
Maybe if I crank the anti-aliasing up a few notches...

those ships in iWar2, with all the light support, that would rock  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

No no! I like that glare on the left--except for the highlighting of that edge right there.

Hm, I think it's a little bit too bright. And the carrier also looked better before, IMO. I liked the way it blended into the background.

It looks good.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

What it's missing is light persistence on the ship in front of the star. Reckon you can handle that?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/devil.gif)

Think of a solar eclipse, you dont see the moon at all, just the shadow it casts..
Same idea here...

In a solar eclipse, the moon eclipses the sun - ie. the subject light source - and so nothing shines through. But here, the subject light source is visible, so light bleeding is meant to be there.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

If the ship completely eclipsed the sun behind it, that would be okay then.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

The Bentusi stations absolutely refuse to cast shadows...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif)

When the sun is only partially eclipsed, do you see any detail on the moon?
No, you just see this shadow
Its because the sun is so bright, it makes the moon seem dark..
Try pointing a bright light at yourself, then slowly move a small object in front of it...

Yes yes yes... I'm not saying you see detail, but you see light, bleeding in front of the object, reflected off the air in front of the object from your POV.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'm shining a light and moving a tennis ball in front of me, and that's just what I see. Black silhouette of the tennis ball, and light bleeding in front of it.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Thorn is right though.. it requires air, which doesn't exist in space.

What Setekh was trying to say(i think) was like this:

You know in lunarcell, if you make a complete eclipse of a planet, you get that red glow around it? Thats what he's saying....

Besides that, in a full eclipse, you get to see a distinct (and normally invisible) corona halo.

Regardless: whilst the light bleed to which Setekh is referring may not be realistic in actual space, but we're talking about a render, where visual impact is more important than reality. Let the light bleed over because it would add to the gee-whiz factor.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

if you cant get the model to cast shadows just render a view from the light itself and use that as a projector map?

I dunno if you can do that in truespace but it could work.
