Found it out on a German gaming FTP site.  Downloaded some other demo from there then when browsing the rest of their files.  Picked the demo with the biggest file size.  Just happened to be the FS2 demo.

Would you rather have them bump that one? :p

Anyway, heres mine:

(again)

One day when I was in third grade or something, my older brother brought home some games he borrowed from his friends. IIRC, he brought HL:OP4, Fallout 1,2, Roller coaster tycoon, and Freespace 2. I played OP4 all the way through and spent a little while on Tycoon, but then I tried freespace. It was the best. I had it on two computers, and was playing it at different spots on both. Eventually on my computer that I have in my room, I got to the second to last mission, of course, I didn't know it was the second to last at the time, but then my brother had to give it back, so I was Freespaceless. Then my HD broke and had to get it formatted. Up until a bit over a year ago, I would off and on spend a few hours on the internet looking for it every few weeks. Then, one humble day, I stumbled across this place called 'The Freespace Oracle'. It pointed me to the HOTU, so I got that version. But then I had to format my HD again because it got a virus Roll Eyes . When I got the computer set up again, I got the HOTU again, but the FTP was down. It was then that I signed on to this forum for the first time, because I wanted to learn more about and join the modern FS community. So I finally decided a more ambitious method of procuring the game. This great person, Zman, had an FTP or something with the ISOs on it, but at the time I didn't know exactly how ISOs worked. I got it anyway, had some trouble mounting them and stuff, but eventually, with you're help, I finally got retail working. At my next birthday, after many failed expeditions into the SCP, I got a computer upgrade. I immediately got the SCP, and finally played with good graphics.

Meaning you wanted to quote the message you were replying to, and reply with "So?" but instead made a very vague, undirected reply that was easy to misinterpret? Ok then. :)

i found fs2 on a demo games disc along time ago in early 1999, i played it i was impressed, thats where the space freak in me grew big time. it was only a few missions but i played it over and over for days on end, unfortunatly back then the computer just gave up on me, being 7 years old it was a bit old. for a few years ive been looking around in early 2006 i stumbled on ebay and found all 3 in one for a few quid (nothing more then 5 quid about 2.60 dollars) since then ive played it over and over for about 300 times, at the end of december someone linked me to this site and here i am.

thanks to freespace i have alot of space games and still growing.

Taristin, Yes  Not necessarily vague or indirect if you read the board and who posted but,I'm no picker of nits as a friend once said to me .I'm just beginning to think  that sometimes this is a forum for a greatly enhanced game which is wonderful.Work done by some talented people.Yet alot of comments can be taken as rude and immature,[which i almost posted with some anger to it] cause weather you are a noob or vet to this your not going to know everything especially since the topics go back so far and it constantly changes. And my comment was "So" to the individual who post a message that obliviously took the wind out of someone's sail. ha ha just call me the etiquette patrol.

In that case, though, when there is a post after the one you are replying to, a quote is usually in order. Thats not to say that my post was counter to yours, it could equally be read as me completing your statement.

I got FreeSpace2: Collossus with my Voodoo2 graphics accelerator card (so I voted demo disc in a bundle). Then gave that card to my brother-in-law along with the disc a lost it for a while. Then going through soem of my old demo discs last year I came across the demo of Freespace 2, thought "That was a good game!" searched the interweb for it, found myself here and a few links to the ISO's, got them, burnt them, played them, then while reading this forum I found out about FS2 Open, upgraded graphics, FS1 port (Which I have now played through twice  :D) and various other user made campaigns. (Just playing through Transcend, then on to Sync  :D) I should be here for quite a few years now.

Note to self: LEARN TO MOD/FRED!!!!  :sigh:

Dark Hunter, in RW (Real World) was talking about trying to find Freespace. I said to myself, "Heh, old game, not worth much, Freelancer is probably better." He found it, played it. He loved it like I love Halo. He told me there was a sequel. He played it, loved it like Freespace. He found out about the EULA clause, burned me three CDs. I installed it, thought it was okay. Played Halo some more. Dark Hunter introduced me to the HLPBB. He gave me some of the mods (plus the important SCP Patch), I played them, loved the new SCP graphics, got hooked. Started own campaign.... oh, right, carried away.

Anyway, recommended by a friend.

FS1 as a birthday present when I was in elementary school.

FS2 as a birthday present when I was in middle school.

Got both demos from PCG, IIRC.

I always like flight simulators games, like, F-15, F-22, F-16, and space shooter games of Start Wars, like the X-wing vs tie fighter and X-wing alliance, them when I on the house of a friend of me, helping him which a pc problem i see they have a game called "Wing Commander 4", when i look i say WHOooa 6 CDs, so i ask it for some days, after i played it, i give it back to him and they say "hey, you do like to try this one?, this have better graphics", i say yes, and she give me a game called "Descent Freespace", which Box, manuals, everything, it wa sthe original game, having original game is very very unusual in now, because they are too damn expensive, i no going to play +$200 for a game (remember that i live in Argentina), but in those days it still possible, because the dollar still in 1to1, anyway... they give me the game, i played it, and i copied the CDs and give it back :P

And Freespace 2... i find it the first time by looking in internet myself, i just put "Descent Freespace2" on the search, and i see the main page there :P

That was back in 2001 year, i first downloaded it, because cant find it on stores, and later on I found it at a good price of $25 (dollar still at 1to1), so i buyed, whit box and everything in 2002 year.

I found the FS1 and 2 combo package and Ground Control and its expansion pack all together for £15...suffice to say I haven't looked back from that purchase.   Bought them both because they both had a rather impressive blurb from PC Gamer.

I purchased a "100 best PC Games ever" magazine in around 1999, with Conflict: FreeSpace ranking about 6th (I have no idea why they didn;t have FS2 on that list). I read the review with earnest and was pleased to discover that it was included on the bundled demo disc. I must have played that demo thirty times in about a week :p

Went out and managed to get myself C:FS and FS2 as a single deal, and fell completely in love with the original then the sequel. Unfortunately as time went by I played them less (other games, other things), and had some tech issues with a new family computer. Disaster also struck when I managed to snap one of my FS2 discs in half while I was playing it through yet again. Frantic searching eventually yeilded me a copy of the GotY edition on ebay <3

It was only very recently, after viewing the Wiki on FreeSpace out of having nothing better to do, that I stumbled across the SCP. A fantastic discovery by any stretch, as I'd long ago come to the conclusion that I was one of very, very few people on the planet who even knew FS existed, let alone played it. The prospect of an active community and user-made campaigns was too much for me to ignore :D.

I heard about it from a friend of mine.  Him, me and our friends would all sit together at lunch.  At random times, he would yell out "Dive, dive, dive!  Hit your burners pilot!"  Eventually I asked him what that was from, and he said "FS2, the most awesome games ever made."  A couple weeks later, I found it at a game store and bought it.

I had a demo disk with Descent: Freespace on it for ages. (Well it wasn't really mine, it was my auntie's) When I found out that there was a community for FS1/2 last year I asked my uncle in England to buy FS1+Silent Threat it off eBay for me. When I finally got it, I couldn't wait to play it, but my computer was playing up. I decided to ask said uncle to buy FS2 for me after I played the demo off the Silent Threat disc. I actually found out about the SCP before I got FS2 and thought It was for FS1  ::) :shaking: :eek2: .

I wouldn't be surprised if you could still pick up FS1+ST from the shops here (Bargain bin bundle, FS1+ST+D3+D3M IIRC). FS2 on the other hand, is impossible.

I remember buying PCG back then, and I ran into an advert for FS2 only once. Next thing I saw was a strategy guide, but that was pretty much it.

Forced to play FS1 and knowing full well that a sequel was out there somewhere... :shaking:

I started out with D2, bought it at a wholesale bookstore. Played the Terminal Velocity demo, but couldn't find the full game, so I made do with the similar offering. Since my computer sucked at the time (games were moving on to 3D acceleration and I didn't have a 3D card back then), I couldn't play D3 when it came out. Interstate '76 and HL:TFC over a 33.6k modem, playing on servers across the globe were my alternatives. Co-op gaming in TFC was more friendly back then... :sigh: :(

Then PCG stuck the D1 demo on a CD, but you know, less features than D2, so I didn't play it. Somewhere along the line when I finally had the system to play D3, I found it bundled with FS1 and ST. Obviously I bought it.

On the rare occasions when I play D3, it's just to play Pyromania. I'm not the type who plays online, point to note...

In the land of Dota, WoW, Maple, CS and Ragnarok, I fly solo in a Pyro-GX... May the ubership survive the heat of popularity's sun... :nervous:

My brother got a bunch of demos on this disc from work for, I beleive, 10 cents. One of them was Descent: Freespace, and, as an avid descent player (at the time) I thought it would be cool. Unfortunately, nobody in the house had a compy good enough to run it properly, so it got forgotten a bit. Then, maybe a year or two later, my parents got a new computer with the OEM version of Freespace 2 bundled with it. Both of us (me and my brother) Absolutely fell in  love with FS2, so he bought FS1, ST and FS2's full version off the net. He wouldn't let me play FS2 all the way through for ages, the wanker, but he did send me a copy of FRED2, which worked fine with the OEM version, and thus I was introduced to FRD before I'd even finished the game.

I've been ordering a games magazine for many years now, and it had Freespace 2 reviewed to the top, and fortunately the magazine's website had the demo, which I wanted to try out. You can guess what happened after...  Amusingly, I found SCP and HLP by Wikipedia. I wanted to see what kind of info the Wiki entry on Freespace 2 had, and it mentioned something about a major source code modification. "What on earth is this Freespace Open? And how the hell does it look that good?!" was my first thought. Through many and many links I finally found myself registering here. Good times..

lol I got FS1 as a Christmas gift in.. 96 or 97 I think? maybe 98.  Anyway, I thought it'd be some crappy space game I'd get bored of in 10 minutes (since i was in the process of playing through WC Prophecy).  Oh man was I wrong.  I must have played through it about 5 times, including ALL The Silent Threat fan-made missions.  then, I somehow heard about Freespace 2, hunted for it on Ebay, noticed most on there were fakes, burned copies or some other garbage.  Then, I found the HotU version through a friend, but wasn't satisfied because of how much it had been stripped down, and I got rid of it fairly quickly.  Then, another friend of mine gave me the ISOs.  And there was much joy.

Found a copy of FS1 at the local goodwill, minus disc 2. Had a friend online send me a copy of disc 2 so I could see the rest of the movies. Had a blast with that and went after FS2 like duck on a junebug when I found a copy. From there, I went to FS2 Open Source and I love it, especially on my machine, which for the purposes of the original game requirements is incredibly high end. Always played using a joystick because I never could play any kind of flight sim game with just keyboard controls or keyboard and mouse.

A couple of months ago on another forum somebody posted a link to the new Wing Commander.  Had a look at their site and then played 'follow the link' until I found myself here.

I wanted this game sooo much when it came out but a P200 with 32Mb of ram and no 3D card was never going to handle it.  It was only the echoes of the original longing that made me persevere through all of the 'tech-speak' and download it.  Still, I've leaned a lot about ISOs and the like.

All of the FREDders mean that I'll probably never get around to playing the games I bought in the Christmas sales!

The OEM version (first missions up to the one where you capture the Taranis) came with my Dell, when I was 8 years old. I played it with my dad (who's a real fighter pilot) and finished the first 2 training missions. After a while we forgot about it. Then 1 year later I played FS again, and I finished the last training mission. I thought it would be another training mission, but I was thrown into a skirmish with Vasudan wings, and I fell in love with it. I finished it up to the Taranis mission and I felt sick. I had to have more. I bugged my dad until when I was 12 years old he got me the full version of FS. I played it and finished it. Then, my dad was a PC World where he found FS2: Colossus. I played it and fell in love again. We got the white tag release of FreeSpace and I finished it. A few years later, I found HLP and played loads of released mods. I was blown away by Inferno, and signed on for an account and began annoying you guys here at Hard-Light ever since. :)
