Hi, playing fs1port on noobeasy mode, and the Tenderizer mission involves protecting the Galatea from ships ramming her, including a large ship, the Mauler.
I finally figured out that taking out the Mauler's engines would be the quickest way to prevent the ramming, but accomplished this at the last minute, with the Mauler right next to the Galatea.
What should I do in this event? Will the mission complete with the Mauler un-exploded?

I honestly don't remember. Try blowing up the Mauler.
I think you've hit one of those points where you're just better (on easy) than the mission designers planned. Go see the "No supernova?" thread for another example of not fitting the expectations of the mission designers.

As far as I can tell, taking out the Mauler yourself doesn't do any additional damage to the Galatea. It's only if you allow it to self-destruct that the Galatea loses major hit-points.

The first time I beat it (in FS1) I had all the fighters present in the mission outfitted with one flail. It held the Mauler long enough for the Galatea to jump unharmed. :D

I always used an Athena there, armed with Stilettos for blasting the engines. Then I'd simply sit there and chip away using my trusty Flail guns...

Shockwave damage is much less than collision damage. You should be fine.

Surely you should take less than 5 years to kill a disabled capship?

Aten class cruisers are the weakest cruisers ever... You should blow it up easy even with constant avenger shots... just sit in an angle where you can't be shot and just hold your fire key.
