Title: Thirdspace DVD cap request
Post by: IPAndrews on January 21, 2007, 08:10:16 am
Hi,

Please can someone who has B5 Thirdspace on DVD get me some caps of the Thirdspace alens' weapons in action. That is caps of any time you see the ships firing. So I know what weapons are supposed to go where, what each weapon looks like, and when and where I have to make it up  ;7

Thanks in advance.

I've rar-ed together some jpg and png files, some of which I've already grabbed.  Some just show fighters, but some include the weapons.  There's one where you can see a warmup glow as the fighter pre-fires.  I've got another sequence there called 3rdspace-shoot01-03, showing a particle trail that the weapon leaves behind it just after its fired.  Something like that will be difficult to do.  We can have the weapon leave a continuous particle and missile (type) trail behind it, but if we want the particles to show up only after firing, thats something that will probably require an overhaul or serious upgrade to muzzle flashes in order to properly simulate.

The rar is located within TBP's Hard Light FTP, under the temp folder.  I'd have hosted it myself, but it would have taken up all my personal web space.

That would be awesome :). If I could access the HLP FTP... Thanks anyway. I'll see if I can find someone to download the files for me and post them on sendit or megaupload or something.

@Triv: Could you PM me the login data for the HLP FTP ? Ever since the server move, I can't connect anymore.

PM it to me too. Even though I'm pretty sure I've already got it and can't connect even with the login information. But I'll try again. Just for comedy value.

I'm not sure where it is.  I inputed it in when I first set up this login a long time ago, but I can't seem to find where the password for that folder is set.

So what do the many downloaders think of the Thirdspace weapon effects?

They're silent. But the download count for those few little DVD caps has reached 32... :wtf:

Maybe they're all modding fantastic Thirdspace weapons for us so we can get the TS ships into 3.4 all the sooner?   :doubt:

The fighter weapons are cool. like big fireballs, but what are you planning to use for the capitol ships? since they fired anything in the game?

I was thinking of a larger fire-blob for anti-capital ship turrets, and either a high-speed anti-fighter fire-blob or a red beam.  We could even create something completely unprecedented.  For example, a high-explosive but inaccurate flak weapon, which explodes with a shockwave which buffets fighters around.

Larger fire blobs for the ani-cap ship turrets seem like a good idea. As for beams? I don't really see them as a beam race. If they were big beam fans I'm sure their fighters would use them. Coming up with come novel weapons to use on their ships, now that's something I really like the sound of.

So we have your shockwave flak weapon idea. Is that do-able in the tables? I have to admit I haven't played with flak much. We could also go with more conventional FS2 flak? emp bombs? I'd really quite like a flame thrower but there's no way I can think of to make that work. I could try it using out smoke damage effect just for comedy value. It would have to fire quite quickly for a constant stream of flame though.

Biggest problem for the TS capship at this point. There are no turrets on it.

I imagined that the TS capships would have the glowing ball at the centre firing out parts of itself. This could either be as a glowing plama bolt, or as something more crystalline, giving TS a sort of 'fire and ice' feel. As for antifighter weapons, I like the idea of a shockwave flak, although graphically i would brefer a more lightweight transparent feel to the shockwave than any of the standard shockwaves.

how about a beam coming from the glowing sphere, kinda like the victory class main cannon? but i think the fireball turrets sound groovy

How about the sphere fires lots, and lots of very inaccurate rapid fire AAA beams in every direction. Every beam a different colour and you never get the same colour from the same part of the sphere twice. Basically a big disco laser light show. We could explain it away using crystaline light refraction or some other bollocks.

The main beam though is obviously big, white and fires down those prongs at the front.

I take it nobody likes the sound of the disco laser show.

Uhh...is that even doable?

Yeah of course. I make 20 or so turrets around the sphere and have each one cycle through 3 different coloured beams.

I did some 3rd space ships a wgile ago, most of it was concept to build a complete race.

mine
sentry platform
Transport
Base

These are all concept, I did send the max models to IP 8 months ago.  I should still have them if they are needed.

If we are going to add another race it might aswell be complete :)

Yeah i like the idea, should be one hell of a light show as you say

Yes, discoship must be cool.

As an aside, this confirms you can make turrets cycle through beams.  I was wondering if that had been hard coded into the SCP when I watched an Omega go from Phalaxn fire to AAA beams without scripting.

That's because IPA mounted 2 different weapons to the turret in the tables.

That's cool, that saves making some events in FRED2.  Anyways, back on topic...

Okay if anyone wants to see the Thirdspace ships working then it's time to give me a hand here. I can do many things but the one thing I'm not is a 2D artist. I need someone with some artistic talent to draw up these weapon effects and on top of everything else I'm trying to do I'd appreciate some help from Joe Public. So if you know someone give them a bell. Thanks.

Well no help seems to be forthcoming here.  I will have a mess around and see if I can wrap a thruster effect around a fireball pof ot something crazy. See how that looks. Crap probably but it might be better than nothing.
