I was playing some missions just now (well INFASA to be exact) and I killed which smashed into the side of a destroyer. It bounced off and exploded with some of DaBrain's pretty effects.
But I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool if instead of bumping off, how about making it so that if a fighter or bomber hits something with a larger mass than it, it instantly explodes instead of going bzzzzzzzzzboom. It would make for some cool moments.
What do you think? Would it be easy to implement? :)

There'd need to be a way to disable death-roll. Sounds like either an ai_profiles.tbl addition, or something for objecttypes.tbl, which would cause a ship to breakup on impact, something like kamikaze behavior.

I had thought that there was an option added recently to control impact damage, but a quick check through the Wiki tables section, doesn't seem to locate it. I bring this up because I wasn't sure if you wanted a fighter to be destroyed when it hits a cap-ship, regardless of its hull strength.

If its rolling to its death and it hits a capship, it usually bounces off. I thought it would be better if it instantly blows up when it is death rolling and hits a capship.

That's easy. What's hard is coding the AI so the fighters don't hit the capships.

Yeah, "Protect" seems to be more like "Attack by Ramming".

One of the old FSport missions has exactly what you're talking about though. I forget the name of it, you need to proctect the GTD Galatea from Kamikaze fighters. The fighters will just fly right into the ship and explode on impact with a small shockwave. It looks a little rough but it certainly seems do-able.
