Hi guys,
Is there a way to play the regular FS2 campaign (FS2Open) while using any ship/weapons you want ?
For example, say I want to play the 1st mission with a Mara with Kaysers, or better, with a Dragon.
Is it possible ?

out of curiousity, why?
and to answer your question, unless you want to edit every mission then find modelview32, open it, find the vp file, extract the missions, edit them(loadouts) and then put them in the missions folder after that create a campaign and your away.
for shivan ships like a dragon you need to edit ship.tbl and for shivan weapons, weapons.tbl all found in vp files.

:shaking: Huh, that looks a bit too complicated for me
Why I want to do that? Simply because the ships we're allowed to fly in the missions suck when compared to the Mara or Dragons, for example...
-
I've always thought that this would be a great idea. At least, it would be cool in the Missions Tech Room to allow you to replay missions with any ship/loadout you want. You shouldn't necessarily be able to throw Tsunmai's on Apollo's or anything, but I do think it would be great to be able to play any mission in FS1 or FS2 with any pilotable craft in the game.
I think that would be cool as a standalone mod at least.
-
Yeah, that's exactly my thought.
in fact there are some games where once u've completed the campaign, u can replay it with everything unlocked.
In Freespace II, it'd be nice to have that feature, i.e., once u've completed the campaing, u can replay it with any pilotable ship in the game.
Doesn't sound to complicated to do. However, it sounds like it'd take a lot of time...

ummm.... The in-game cheat codes will give you a lot of what you're looking for. Why not just use them?
-
ummmm, I say that's a f**** good idea!! Thxs Turey!
-
hum, after all, that's not such a good idea because:
* "Use of cheats in some versions of the game will result in inability to continue the campaign from beyond that current mission."
* I can't seem to find a cheat to do what I want, i.e., to unlock all crafts
too bad... :sigh:

Hum.. Would it be possible to do that with Fred ? i.e., edit each mission of the main campaign and change available ships/weapons ?
-
An Ace Combat like system for the campaign would be neat.

Just to answer that question: Of course, and it wouldn't take much work if you do it with notepad. You just need to edit the part about available weapons & ships, making all ships available and then CnP this info in every mission file. There're still the SEXPs that allow the weapons/ships during the campaign, but I don't think they'll create any errors if the weapon/ships are already allowed. Well, that's trial and error.
-
Ok, thxs. What file(s) do I need to edit ?
-
Open the root_fs2.vp with VP View and extract the mission and campaign files. You can edit the .fs2-files with FRED or Notepad. Perhaps you also need to update the campaign files, I'm not sure about that one.
Btw: You don't need to create a new topic for this, especially because it's in the wrong forum section.
-
Ok thxs. I guess I also need to rebuild the root_fs2.vp file once I'm done modifying the .fs2 files ?
About your remark:
Are u talking about the thread entitled: "How to edit missions" ? If so, then yes, maybe I should'nt have created it. I just wanted a more explicit title. Also, I wasn't sure where to put it (should it be modding ?).
So feel free to delete it!
Thxs,

I guess "Missions & Campaigns", "FRED" and perhaps "Modding" would fit. Concerning the deletion, I guess as long as no one responded to it you can delete it yourself (at least in most forums I know you can).
-
I've just tried:
"An Error Has Occurred!
You cannot delete your own topics in this board."
I guess an Admin has to do it ?

No. You just have to put the files into freespace2\data\missions when you're done with them.

It works, but when I play those missions, the sky is gone (with lots of stars). Any explanation for that ? Maybe my mediavps are not in the correct directories ?
They are placed as follows:
mv_models.vp and mv_textures.vp in /mediavps/data/models
mv_effects.vp and mv_adveffects in /mediavps/data/effects
mv_core.vp is in /mediavps
When I play non-edited missions, everything works fine.

All the mediavps go in freespace2\mediavps\. No exceptions. You should never have a .vp inside a data folder or any subfolder of a data folder.

Ok, thxs Turey. Do u have any idea why I loose the sky when I put a mission in the missions folder and play it ?
-
* "Use of cheats in some versions of the game will result in inability to continue the campaign from beyond that current mission."
In all of the games that have said that and that I have cheated in, that has never happened. They're just making that up so you don't cheat.
-
Ok. But there doesn't seem to exist a "Cycle through ships" cheat, or does it ?

When you've played a mission in the campaign, that mission will show up in the mission simulator. Simply choose the mission you want to play and enable any cheat you want. Since it's not played in the campaign, you do not need to bother with campaign progress or whatnot.
