I felt like making something bigger than a fighter so I decided to model a corvette. I'm still working on it but I don't know what else to add to it (apart from the anti fighter defenses).

So, what do you think?
-
It looks ok, rather simplistic. It could use some details, but the shape is nice :) Although those guns are a tad bit too long (and very low-poly - you're allowed to use rounded shapes you know ;) ).
-
Nice design. Needs more detail IMO.
-
IMO, it looks more like a battleship than a corvette (maybe for those WW2 battleship-looking turrets). Anyway, nice model
-
nice model. Has it got fighterbays?
-
I don't much care for the 'fins' on the bridge (I think it's the bridge.. anyway, near the top). Doesn't quite feel like a corvette. Not bad though, keep refining, you'll achieve eventual perfection! :)
-
Thanks for the comments :)
I've continued to mess around with the model:

Is it better?
Unknown Target & Snail: Yeah I know... I'm not very good at making things detailed.
Darth DySkO: I thought so. I wanted it to resemble a WW2 ship.
Admiral Edivad: Nope, but I might add them later.
Ulala: I hope I do :)
-
i just logged on for the first time in weeks, and THAT FIRST MODEL WASABSOLUTLY PURFECT!!!!!!!!!!!! PURE GENIUS!!!!!!!!!! gimme model, now!!!!!!
-
Ohhhh I love it. I wanna copy of that.
That'll fit into my fleet perfectly :)
-
Its coming along well, but can use a lot more detail, IMO
-
Wow, compared to the Inferno designs, this one looks awesome. Compared to any of the FreeSpace designs this looks nice.
-
Wow, compared to the Inferno designs, this one looks awesome.
What's that supposed to mean? :mad2:
Though if you're talking about the super-blocky Phobos, I sort of agree with you. It doesn't look like a successor to the Deimos, way to blocky.
-
I just find half of the Inferno designs to be impractical.
-
Many Inferno designs in R1 are, I say, crap. And the Shivan fighters which use the Harpy's maps, the Succubus, other stuff from OTT (except if they've been tweaked), Pakhet, Apis, etc. suck IMO.
-
I do like the fact that some of the concept arts were made into models, but I think that should be more of an addon for the other ships.
-
I think this ship definitely looks more like a cruiser or some sort of heavy monitor ship than a corvette. Those guns look mean and purposeful, but rather overkill for a corvette! Also...I prefer ( personally speaking ) the original version without the two large engines ( I think they are ) at the rear of the hull. They would block the arc of fire for the side turrets and restrict firing to the front arc only. This would almost make turrets pointless. The original design would give them a full 180 arc of fire.
-
Looks just like something from gundam.
-
jesus christ that thing has huuuuge guns
Make them smaller, it looks pretty ridiculous.
-
Its special.

I was thinking along the lines of a future Confed destroyer ;)
Although those massive turrets need to be chopped down quite a bit.
And if you decide to remove the engines, I want a copy beforehand... their perfectly designed for bussard intakes. :)
-
The oversize guns were what made me think of Monitors. Ships like this one:
They were basically floating gun platforms. Useless in a stand up fight, since they were not good sea-ships, but for fire support of shore operations, they were ideal. Much shallower draught than a battleship. This was the kind of thing this ship reminded me of.
With a decent amount of fighter cover, this would be ideal for 'reducing' space stations, or conducting planetary bombardments. If the weapons had any kind of recoil to them, there would be no way you could effectively manouver a ship like this while firing.... but imagine the bombardment something like that could lay down ;)
-
What kind of stuff shoots out of the really long barrels?
-
Cutlery?
-
Hey Admiral, thanks for the model :)

-
Needs something to stagger the heights on those foredeck turrets, looks like the aftward ones can shoot the ones ahead of them, especially the 3rd one back.
-
Actually I think the beam turret, the single barrel one in the middle arm sits higher than the forward AM gun
-
Oooh, I like what you've done with it. It looks a lot better. I can't wait to see the full textured version. :)
-
Well here you go: :) [ok not fully textured :P ]

-
Looks like a Wing Commander ship. :D
-
Yeah, it reminds me of the Tallahassee (sp?)
BTW, good work
-
The front section actually came off the Tellie.
Now with glowmapping

-
It looks great! :)
Just curious, what are you going to call it?
-
I love this.............................
[faints]
PS the Bellingham class as a name would be ok with me !
Good work Scoob.
Kudos + 5000

I'd agree with that :) . And I'd like a copy of it at that stage, too ;) .
As to what you've done with it - I sort of miss the big side-mounted turrets, and also I'd rather have used WC2-style textures (because of the "bridge" it mostly reminds me of the Concordia...). But the extra detail does help it...
Oh, and what's that background of yours? Looks really good  .
And as for what I'd have done with it (not to say that I'd have been anywhere near as fast as Scooby_Doo), I'd say I could use it for sort of a strike-cruiser in FS - quick, heavy armed (some cap-beams on those turrets; or maybe sort of heavy plasma gun or even Helios launchers), but little anti-fighter defense and somewhat restricted arc of fire (as FlareBaffled said, just that I'd turn it into a feature instead of complaining about it ;) ).
And it'd be best to use Deimos-like textures, in that case.
(Yup, I said it reminds me of Wing Commander - but then, I prefer the FS timeline and so tried to spot a place for it there ;) )

Now that we've got side mounted turrets back online.

turret rotation needs to be fixed
-
Beautiful ship.
Release it please. :D

Now that we've got side mounted turrets back online.
I've read about that in the "recent builds" subforum, but is there any detailed description on how to properly set them up ? Does it support only 90° side mounted turrets or any arbitrary angle ?
-
Any angle, giving you know how to convert it's angles to vectors.
-
Ok, but how would I correctly set up the rotational axis ? PCS only gives the options for x,y, or z axis rotation for a subobject. Is there a way to define an arbitrary rotation axis somewhere ?
-
Rotation axis stays the same, you just need to give it an up and a forward vector in the subsystem properties.
$uvec: X, Y, Z
$fvec: X, Y, Z
-
Ah I see, so the table notation hasn't changed since the last time Bobboau introduced his implementation ?
-
Nope, just in the pof file
