Title: Headphones
Post by: Polpolion on January 24, 2007, 06:14:48 pm
I'm gonna buy some really nice headphones, but I'm kinda clueless. I tend to like the really big headphones that cancel noise and have good bass quality. I was thinking about wireless headphones, but I'm unsure of their quality/ interference/charging times. My price range is up to about 100USD.
Does anyone have any good suggestions for me?

EDIT: Is this one any good? (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2467674&sku=I140-1012) :p

I guess you should be looking at closed headphones if you want to block out noise. The Audio Technica ATH-A500, Sony MDR-V6 and Sennheiser HD280 are the most commonly recommended closed pairs for under $100 (the last one reportedly has a few durability issues though).

My girlfriend has the Sannheiser if I remember correctly. She has taken good care of them and hasn't had any trouble. They feel very comfortable (can be worn for long periods without headaches, etc), block out noise, sound great, and are decently priced. As long as you aren't too rough with them.  :)

I have Sennhreiser HD-570, I love it. It is way better than my older Sony and Philips headphones.

I have a Sennheiser 130 headset and I've been really really pleased with them. My friend has one of the medium prize range models of Sennheiser headphones and no complaints from him either. I can highly recommend the brand.

So I've narrowed it down to these (not in any order):

Sony MDR-V6 (http://www.audioreview.com/PRD_118127_2750crx.aspx)
icetech MK-833VI (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2467674&sku=I140-1012) (mainly because of price)
LTB Magnum (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2512265&CatId=390)
Sennheiser RS120 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1338652&CatId=390)
Icemat black Siberia (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1496725&CatId=390)
Sennheiser HD415 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2368281)
Sennheiser HD280 (http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=2860407&JRSource=GAW.datafeed.SEN+HD280)
or just keep my koss (http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^fs^UR21) headphones?

As you can see I'm really leaning torwards the Sennheisers...

Does anyone know anything about the quality of wireless headphones? I think it'd be convenient to have a pair, but if static interferes with the sound, then that would defeat the purpose of getting new headphones.

What do you people recommend from these few?

EDIT: now that I'm looking, some of those Koss ones look pretty nice...

the sony closed cups are too big for my ears so i usually end up with 2 ear aches within the end of the day, i threw them out, im just using some cheap(about 1 quid/ 2.20 dollars)  earphones atm altough it will give you headaches if worn for very long time, but its better than the sony ones. i also have some specialised headphones for creating music closed cup to avoid any noises, i belive these ones are a earlier version of the sennheiser.

dont get usb headphones if you have an audigy or x-fi as they bypass your sound card

I think the issue with those actually depends on the size of your head. :p If you have a big head, the headband cracks after a few months, but smaller heads have no problems. I'm just going by what I have heard though.

I wouldn't recommend those. Every wireless headphone I have tried has a slight hiss in the background when no sound is being played. You will also have to pay about triple the price to get the same sound quality as a wired one.

The HD280 would certainly be a good choice. It's slightly lacking in bass but sounds great with music, apparently on par with many models that cost twice as much, and also has exceptional isolation.

Okay, so hopefully I'll get the Seinheiser HD280 silver if my parents let me spend the $90 for it. Otherwise, I'll probably get the EH-150 for $42.

I double checked, these are the ones my girlfriend has, Sennheiser HD-212s:

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-212-HD-212-Headphones/dp/B000065BPA/sr=1-10/qid=1169784331/ref=sr_1_10/103-6397227-4520600?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

As long as your head isn't too big (as CP pointed out, they can be worn out) they shouldn't give you any trouble. I highly recommend them.

Well I finally ordered one. After weeks of searching, I have found one.

Out of all the ones I looked at and you suggested, this is the one I ordered: none of them.
I ended up getting the HD215s from J&R.  Fair price, and they had some convinent features.

*waits for everyone to shout "Why the hell did you get that one? that one sucks!"
