Title: Can engines rotate?
Post by: bizzybody on January 25, 2007, 12:04:57 am
Just wondering if it's possible to have engines that rotate around their axis, parallel to the lenghtwise axis of the ship. I've an idea for a non-human ship with a pair of pairs of engines that counter rotate. Why do they rotate... because the aliens like them that way? Perhaps it helps with fuel flow, or they need radiation to live and built part of the habitat section around the engines?

Whichever, it's only a basic Idea that just popped into my head. ;)

there are test builds that let you do this. but its far from being an offitial feature.

if you want a normal stedy rotation that doesnt vary, you can just make your engines physical subsystems like the section on the science ship.

actualy most of that code is in CVS, and in all recently released builds, I'm not sure if it works or not cause I didn't test it after WMC's-ubber-update-of-doom on the scripting system, but I supose I'll leave that as an exersise for you to figure out.

here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,43812.0.html) is the origonal thread

It'd be cool to have a spinning engine part that varies speed with throttle setting and really winds up when afterburner is used. :)

...damnit!

Like a sort of propeller with engines attached to it you mean?

Top Secret.

For Terran military eyes only.

With the invention of a new engine technology, which for still not well understood reasons requires rotation of the main power assembly, Galan Aerospace has been contracted to apply it to a prototype ship.

The primary reason their application has been selected is they already had a suitable hull partly constructed but abandoned when they lost a bid for a mid-size capital ship.

Galan Aerospace's 'Istrano' project is currently being retrofitted with the new engines and work is proceeding well, with the rotary engine housings (shown in blue) connected to the original 'Istrano' hull (mint green) via the new engineering pods. (white)

A pair of their as-yet unnamed small craft (codename 'sleek') are shown for scale.

Updates will be commed as construction proceeds.
--------------

I first made the part that rotates, then split off the front face and extruded the white part. I was having a time thinking of what to make to stick this thing onto when I remembered the 'Istrano', which I had started then quit working on. With a bit of vertex relocating to fit the connector parts to the sides of the main hull, the 'Istrano' is reborn! :)

More progress. It now has main hull engines (that would be throttled down or off when using the experimental engines) and a fighter bay, plus a crappy texture that's one of the tiles that comes with trueSpace.
