Title: Introducing myself
Post by: G0atmaster on January 25, 2007, 06:04:19 pm
Hello all, I'm known in gaming circles as "Goatman," and stumbled across this site, and was pleasently surprised to find a very active group of people working on projects involved in what seems to be the ressurection of a great game that (as far as I knew) had all but died off about 4 years ago.  Needless to say I was overjoyed.  I'm quite a bit overwhelmed, and would appreciate it if I could get a little advice on where to start.

First of all, I have the original Freespace and Freespace 2 games, is it still worth it to download FS Open?  If so, why?  Also, I don't know much about programming or modeling or anything like that, but I'd be a VERY eager beta tester, and would be happy to lend suggestions to anyone looking for stylistic advice in mod creation or whatnot.  I don't have a WHOLE lot to offer, but I'm willing to help where I can.  If anyone needs it.

Other than that, I'm 17, a Christian, an avid gamer, and really ticked off at how the FS storyline ended.  FS2 left way too many questions unanswered, and I wanna see that fixed.  I'm sure many feel the same.  Nice to meet you all.

Also, are there any mod downloads that are dialup friendly?  I'm only rarely able to get on a broadband connection.

I'm probably not the only one thinking about this but since no one seems to dare, I'll have to ask, amuse us.... why "Goatman"?  :drevil:

Easy.  As I said, I'm only on dialup most of the time.  This is due to me being about 40 miles away from the nearest big city, living on, you guessed it, a goat ranch, complete with 300 goats.  One day I logged onto (then) WON to play some Team Fortress Classic after having just downloaded it for the umpteenth time due to Valve's then-buggy updater, and was feeling very uncreative about a nickname, and thus, "Goatman" was born.  It's stuck ever since.  My mom owns the ranch, btw.

I have to ask this - why does anyone farm goats?

Good money in it, and goats are automatic lawnmowers.

-Nice to meet you, Goaty. You are welcome here as long as you don't mention FS_.

Yes.

If so, why?
Go check out the last page or two of this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,25406.575.html). All of those are in-game shots.

Also, are there any mod downloads that are dialup friendly?  I'm only rarely able to get on a broadband connection.

My Installer allows you to choose which files to download, which can save a lot of bandwidth.

However, if you'd like to save even MORE bandwidth, you can do this:
1. Install FreeSpace 2 from your disks, if you haven't already. Install it to C:\Games\FreeSpace2.
2. Now, put the first disk of FreeSpace 2 back into your CD drive.
3. Copy all the files with the extension of ".MVE" from the disk to the folder C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data\movies\ (create this folder if it doesn't exist)
4. Do the same thing for disks 2 and 3.
5. Use this patch (http://www.pxo.net/files/fs21x-12.exe) to patch your game to 1.2.
6. Put this file (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/installedversions.txt) in C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Installer\ (create this folder if it doesn't exist)
7. Download this file (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.zip), and unzip the contents to C:\Games\FreeSpace2\
8. Run FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.exe. Give it C:\Games\FreeSpace2, then select "All Features" and "Let me choose."

Welcome to HLP!

Just don't put the number three after those two letters and you'll be fine.

ah, I just read a topic on it.  Sorry.

Maybe the forum mods should make those three letters a censored word lol.

These forums have... interesting experiences of word filters and such, to say the least. Perhaps word "backfire" would describe at least one particular case more than adequately... :drevil:

As for who I am, I am a FREDder in this community. I'm actually pretty damn good but ive only released old crap i made when i was 11 so far. I'm in the middle of an extremley long project ATM.

lolz ok.

It's just that I go by both G0atman and G0atmaster, and Goatman and Goatmaster in other various gaming communities, so it was pretty interesting you'd brought up G0atmaster, which made me jump to the conclusion you knew me from somewheres else.

You could think you were good but then people might play it another way and find your missions riddled with bugs. And my 11 year old missions were pretty damn good. In one you had to kill 10 Lucifers with a Ursa, it was really cool!

What? Freespace wasn't around eleven years ago! Or did you mean when you were 11 years old?
