So I saw that a Russian demo for Tarr Chronicles was out, and I wasn't about to let a little thing like not knowing the language stop me. It wouldn't be so bad if it was in actual Russian, which I might have a chance of understanding, but all the text renders as question marks, probably due to it being in Cyrillic. However, thanks to game interfaces being very standardized over the years, and some trial and error, getting to the actual game isn't that hard (as long as you're not concerned about changing options, understanding the mission, customizing loadout etc)
It comes off as a newer, prettier Freelancer/FS2 type game. The physics are non-Newtonian, thank God, sostandard shooter fans should feel quite comfortable. You can select between cockpit and 3rd person views. The in-game UI is normal space shooter fare, so figuring out what's what ( targeting enemies, checking speed, following your wingmen, reaching waypoints) is intuitive. The graphics are pretty sweet - they're not going to give Crysis a run for its money, but they're definitely modern and up to date. Oh, and the style of the cinematics is straight out of Homeworld 1/2.
I really hope they make an English language version of this game. I can't comment on anything other than the graphics and basic gameplay, but from what I've seen it's a polished, professional game. It doesn't feel crappy at all, unlike some recent space sims I could mention (Darkstar One, I'm looking at you). And frankly, that's enough for me.

Thanks for the heads-up, Rictor.

I just played the demo, the graphics and animatics are great but the controls arent good, specially the mouse IMO, I had quite some trouble just flying the ship. Hope they release a english version soon.

There is joystick support, isn't there?
-
I dont know, for me it wouldnt matter since I dont even own a joystick :P, but there probably does but figuring out with the language like this is impossible.

it looks good, but playing in russian sucks :(

(edit) I lied!!!! Ok downloaded and installed, and since I can`t read russian just clicked on highlighted buttons, seemed good at the time, but then when I went to run it I found out it uninstalled itself. :wtf:

Yeah, in-game control with the mouse is a bit sluggish. At first it's annoying, but once the fighting started I didn't notice it, even when making tight turns and following an enemy, so it must not be all that bad.
...and how did you guys manage to uninstall it? :wtf: :wtf:
It's not like I'm any better at reading question marks than you, and I clicked through to the game with no problems (even managed to fiddle with the ship customization a bit).
I assume you're both running on standard issue Electronika BK-0010s, right? 'cause now that you mention it, the game might have trouble running on computers not made by the sturdy Soviet People's Mechanical Computation Bureau, but I just assumed everyone had one.

How do I get Russian text to display on my computer? All I got in-game was a series of question marks. Other than that I loved the graphics.
-
This isn't about Taristin, then?

You know, the soviet union hasn't been around for over 10 years now. I think some Russians might take offense...
