Title: The old days
Post by: CP5670 on January 31, 2007, 11:42:03 am
I thought I would educate some of the newer members here on ancient Freespace culture.

A venerable tradition. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010407214827/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/012929.html)

Probably THE definitive community classic. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010308090656/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001723.html)

An old bug in MT-07 that was fun because of its rarity more than anything else. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010426140154/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/002804.html)

I like this one. In case anyone does not know, Fattony=an0n. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010407221330/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/013245.html)

I guess he eventually read this. (http://web.archive.org/web/20011222001557/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/014319.html)

The official word on it and a few other interesting responses. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010302212606/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/002569.html)

It wouldn't be a bad idea to post something like this when the next thread on it comes up. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010828211753/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/014914.html)

Fun times in squadwar. (http://web.archive.org/web/20011112022846/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/001499.html)

And more of the same a year later. (http://web.archive.org/web/20011006054806/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/003813.html)

This wouldn't have been so funny... (http://web.archive.org/web/20011031194516/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/003785.html)

...if it wasn't followed by this a day later. (http://web.archive.org/web/20011031191802/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/003840.html)

This only started happening a year or two after FS2's release, but then became common. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010426141841/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/002814.html)

Very classy indeed. I have yet to see anything comparable on any other forum. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010902202732/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/fs2_threadclose.jpg)

The original noob basher, although someone beat him to it here. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010426102034/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/001788.html)

And once again. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010426101232/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/001784.html)

This was apparently happening often enough to warrant a ready-made response. (http://web.archive.org/web/20021208222827/http://home.att.net/~clay.h/fs2/violition.htm)

The HLP guys goofing off. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010627065616/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/014368.html)

I need to find that news article on here about this. (http://web.archive.org/web/20011031195041/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/015818.html)

The closing days of a once great place. (http://web.archive.org/web/20011031212025/vbb.volition-inc.com/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Squad+War&number=5)

And to end this off, a look at this place. Check out the frequency of the updates back then. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010603042225rn_1/www.3dap.com/hlp)

There are plenty of other good threads or incidents that come to mind (RAMALAMADINGDONG squadron, RAMALAMADINGDONG campaign, RJM's spamming spree, HFB's spamming spree, the Gkar thread, any post by Malbouef, Klee Vahj or Shivan1001, ZB's Vasudan song animation, etc.), but they apparently were not picked up by the crawler.

This is the result of having two hours off at the university with absolutely nothing to do. I'll need to get used to it this semester. :p

Someone managed to find the VBB archive.

Man I still love the ubb layout to this day. Btw, Zylon made the Multiple Violations Flash.

Also "The Closing days of once a great place" is kind of a misnomer. Squad War forums were closed way before the rest, and they were never a great place :p

Also you need to bring Procyon Insurgency to the god damn university and finish the **** already.

It was great in the sense that it made excellent reading every morning. :D

I'm surprised you still remember the name. It's old enough that I found a few references to it over there. However, my laptop is hosed and out for replacement, and even if it was working, it can't handle FRED (or any other 3D app) for more than about 10 minutes before overheating and throttling.

ZB's Vasudan song animation

This (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,13280.0.html)?

If so, one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Excuses!

By the way, remember Freakspace (http://www.shatteredstar.org/groups/freespace/freakspace.html) and Timmy (http://www.shatteredstar.org/groups/freespace/timmy.html)?

Also we can't forget The Oracle (http://volitionwatch.com/oracle/index.php?dateIndex=978587999). I think Oracle is one of the things I miss the most. It was the only place where you could have Descartes, Asuka Soryu Langley and Kazan come and share their opinions.

Believe it or not, I still work on it on and off, whenever I have the inclination. I won't say anything about a release date though. :p

Very nice, looks like you have the whole thing over there. I found one thread on Freakspace in the WM archive but the links were all dead.

Haha, these things seem to have been priceless...

Anyway, the Rawhide link and a comment about Vasudans getting too much Bosch Beer led me for some reason to do a google image search with "Bosch Beer". This is what came up...

How fitting that it depicts a man fishing... :drevil:

There used to be another drink they made called Bosch Power Mix. I distinctly remember everyone laughing about it back then, but I can't seem to find any images or references of it now.

Man I remember those days.  The drinking and provking.  Leaving work early to make a Squadwar that would end up posponed anyways.  Eth hanging out in the lobby with the big sippy cup of coffee.  Spending more time BSing in the lobby than playing.  The lovely lobby splats.  The Entities.

Glad to see you found those archives.   There some stuff in those that I've been looking for.

Haha, I remember Eth. Great guy, seemed to be on PXO almost all the time. :D

Most of the threads are lost, unfortunately. Only a handful of the thread links work, and in some cases only the first page of a thread was archived.

Actually, I think he was banned there at some point, although I can't remember why.

Nah, the Squadwar section was already going to be removed due to all the fighting there. I guess everyone in multiplayer was a bit pissed off at Volition at that point (support was nonexistent), but some people went too far with it. The rest of the VBB was taken down six months later.
Title: Re: The old days
Post by: BlackDove on February 03, 2007, 01:05:52 pm
It was a THQ decision, they even got THQ moderators on there to just handle the thing before it shut down.

Squad War forums didn't really degenerate because of the lack of support was more prominent there, they got shut down first because those forums bred a special type of player akin to the general CounterStrike fanbase. Everyone who was smart, and had some practical skills be it modeling, texturing, FREDing etc. was likely to have a brain. Those people habited the Freespace or FREDing forums. The average multiplayer fan however, had no brain whatsoever. So the place degenerated at a higher pace.

Didn't squadwar go down because they moved the servers to a new building and no one knew how to reconfigure it?   I don't think they took it down on purpose.  Same with PXO but it came back up for a little while.

Can you post a direct link to the root of all the posts that were saved.  I'd like to find out if some of the FRED support area was saved.

Ok back on topic here:

You could almost always find a Drunk passed out somewhere in the lobby.
To get away from noobs you would just go to the tech support forum and play
Waiting for hours for a cable or DSL server to open up.
People racing through the lobby to get back to the server first after a crash.
Todd Millers vane attempts to disquise himself in the lobby from time to time trying to catch spammers.
Can't remember who but he would get banned for cheating then be back in a day or 2 with 20000000 points and 1 kill.

.

The Squad War website was closed when they moved servers and couldn't get it back up.

We're talking about the Squad War forum.
Title: Re: The old days
Post by: CP5670 on February 03, 2007, 01:21:37 pm
Yeah, Squadwar itself was up much longer than its forum. The SW website has been archived too and you can actually see the squad listings from the three original leagues, although the nodemaps don't work.

You can check the VBB snapshots here (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://vbb.volition-inc.com) and some more can be accessed from the VBB link on the main site (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.volition-inc.com). The place closed down in mid 2002, so the links after that are useless. If you go to a thread link that works and then click on the topic listing again, you will often get a different selection of topics.

Some things in the FRED forum work, but the old Trick of the Week thread is broken. :(

Check this out:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001210142400/www.squadwar.com/league.cfm?leagueid=2

Even Volition is in there, and with a 2-1 record. Not bad. :D I don't know why Drak has no power listed though.

Heh.

http://web.archive.org/web/20021012111947/www.squadwar.com/league.cfm?leagueid=5

That was just before we relinquished control of all of them to people who still wanted to play. By taking the league as an active squad, we prompted the last response from Volition (I think Todd did it) to unlock all of the locked nodes that have been jammed for a long time.

Lucky someone saved, fixed and uploaded (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/TrickWeek/Trick1.htm) it then isn't it? :D

I have a few other threads from the FRED forum backed up. I can't remember what exactly now though.

Cool, I had forgotten that you had archived the whole thing. There is still plenty of useful stuff in there, although some things (like having the support ships repair hull) are now much easier to do in FSO.

That seems to be pretty common.  Interplay did an aweful job of marketing the game and nobody knew about it when it came out.  Sales were low and that was it.  But years later its still going because its a really good game that nobody payed attention to.  I have high hopes that 9 years later, someone will finally give Volition the go ahead to make the third game that is so deserved.

Yah. The community back in '99-'01 sounded like alot of fun. I would probably have upward of 3000 posts now if I knew about the great communities.

Back in '04 or somethin, after interplay went under I think, i tried to find a copy of the game (perhaps the second or third search?) but it never quite worked. I found HOTU but I didn't want to get it--too slow of a download.

Anyways, when I was in 8th grade, i was going to give some people I knew a copy of FS2C... didn't quite happen... lol.
In the beginning of this school year (iirc), I was talking to an interesting guy who used to go to a similar school; a friend of Bro. Carl (the computer guy :P) and we talked a bit. I ended up bringing in my OEM disc and telling him how to get SCP and whatnot. I gave him a disc copy, though I kept the disc in my binder for too long-it was a zipper-binder and somehow the disc was broken when I found it a few days later. :( i'm still sad that I broke that disc.

Anyways, after breaking it I downloaded all the disc images from freespacezone. I have silent threat already, though I'm lacking the original 2 discs of FS1.

I've been here for a while; i was a lurker for a short bit before joining... usually when Freespace sparked my interest I'd look for stuff on FS3 until I found here. I remember hearing about D***k (Not-So-)S***t and I was tempted to join them... I stumbled on it shortly after it happened.

Anyways I was an on-and-off visitor to this site for the past few years. I finally registered, though.

most of em are still at THQ... basically everyone good stayed onboard--a job is a job, especially when you have so much free time and good pay.
