Just don't ask yes-no questions.

Asking if anyone knows usually will just entail "Yes, I know".  Asking where, as Macfie did in his third post, would justify a location being the right answer, however, as my post in the old Twilight thread did.

Anyway, download and install it from here:

Then install my patch to fix the bugs:

After that you should be good to go.

Dude, i never knew about this campaign. It works ! and it looks fun. And the nebulas aren't bad.

btw, hlp's search function is particularly bad. this thread didn't come up on a search for "twilight" but did on "Twilight". that just sucks.

So saying "Oh just search for it" it isn't always that easy.

Well, HLP's search function is only rated up to 12 wonderfulness. Once HLP passed that mark, things started going wrong with it.

BTW, HLP is currently at around 542 wonderfulness.

SMF by definition doesn't have very good search functions.  Something to do with the way it keeps track of database entries, maybe.  I dunno - adapting isn't too difficult though.

If the neutron cannons of this campaign show up fine (and do the requisite damage) but make no sound, is this a problem with my installation, or is that a feature that never got fully implemented for that weapon?

I believe I've followed the installation instructions, but I'm not positive.  My mod.ini is pointing to the mediaVP directory.  All of Goob's fixes I placed in their respective \twilight\data\ directories.  For kicks and giggles, I even tried dumping those files straight into the Twilight directory, but it made no difference.  Didn't even crash anything like I thought it would.  [mild disappointment]  :p

Thoughts?  Advice?  Point-and-laugh?

IF you're not getting sound the only thing I can suggest is taking a look at the weapons.tbl and seeing which sound should play. Then try to figure out if the sound exists and is in the right format.
Title: Re: Twilight
Post by: perihelion on February 07, 2007, 10:35:48 pm
Hmm.  Ok.  According to weapons.tbl, sound "162" should be playing.  I see similar "numbers" for the sounds of other weapons.  Must admit I'm confused, because the names of the weapon sounds have nothing to do with those numbers as far as I can see in either sparky_fs2.vp or corefiles_twilight.vp.  I mean, I've even found the sound that should be playing.  It was in corefiles_twilight.vp, and it is called npw2.wav in the data\sounds\8b22k directory.

EDIT: Found GalEmp's tutorial on modding and tables.  That was somewhat enlightening.  I've never done any of this before, but if I had to guess, there needs to be a custom sounds.tbl in addition to all the others Goober provided?

Beh.  I may try my hand at it if no one else beats me to it, but not tonight.  I've got a 5-week old daughter driving us both a little batty.  I just came upstairs for some quick stress relief before rejoining the fray.

Sounds like you've stumbled across the cause of the problem. With no table entry linking sound 162 to an actual .wav you just hear silence instead.

The wiki makes no mention (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Modular_Tables) of a modular table for sounds so you're probably correct about what is needed in order to solve the problem.

If you have the original Twilight release it has a sounds table in the VP file.  You should be able to extract that to the data/tables folder in the mod file.
I'll attach a copy of the sounds file.

You know, I wondered if a previous version had included a sound table.  That did indeed fix the problem.  Good catch.

Goober, would you care to include this table in your patch?

@ Goober

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,45179.msg923399.html#msg923399 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,45179.msg923399.html#msg923399)

I'm now having some trouble with the 4th mission, though.  I keep getting CTD when I bring a BlackTalon into view, but not everytime I do it.  The first time, I thought the problem was with the hidden subspace portal (?), but I've tried it several more times.  The crash is at seemingly random points during the mission.  Sometimes I get as far as fighting some of the Blacktalons that emerge from the portal.  Sometimes I crash before I can finish off the BlackTalons that were on station when the mission began.

This sounds suspiciously like a problem you already mentioned fixing in one of the other Twilight related threads... ?  I'm too far out of my depth.  I'd like to help diagnose the problem, but I need some advice on what to look for.

Okay, here's my patched upload.  This includes everything, so just delete what's in your twilight mod folder and replace it with this.
http://staff.hard-light.net/goober5000/downloads/twilight.zip

Incidentally, I figured out what was causing the CTD.  Something was wrong with the Black Talon shield mesh, so I just imported one from another fighter.

Thanks very much.  I never would have caught that.  I'll download and give the campaign a fresh start with a new pilot just to be doubly sure no hangups from the last version stick around.

The mesh problem was one of the reasons why it was pulled to begin with, no one at the time seemed to know what exactly was wrong with the fighter.

Goob, would you be willing to host up a re-release of Twilight "classic" on HLP with your patch integrated into it? Frontpage linkage and all?

Someday soon (once done with these grad school apps) I'll toss together some new command briefing animations for it. Similarly I have a new mesh for the Ikeya-Gehenna gateway.

I'm sure HLP would be glad to host a website, complete with a hosted URL, a spot on the dropdown menu... the works. :) Unfortunately, ever since the new download policy, we can't host actual public downloads.  You'd need to use something like FileFront or MyDataBus.

I was delighted enough to finally be able to play through this excellent campaign that I went ahead and added nameplates and LS nebulae to it.  Note that the retail behavior of the campaign is not affected by adding these:

I'm still having a problem with the blacktalon. It's showing up as some kind of crazy jaggy sharp object and in missions with it in it is doing all kinds of tearing across the screen and stuff. No crashes tho.

When I have some more time I'll do up some new Command Briefing animations and nebula backgrounds in the same style as those for BWO.

Don't you need a modified table to use the nebulae?  Twilight looks like it has a star table already that just has the retail nebulae.  I modified a star table that should work, but the forum will not allow me to upload it.
