Title: Return of Hated Graphics Problem...
Post by: Javito1986 on February 05, 2007, 04:09:31 pm
I hate this issue... i.e. the problem with the pixelated and ugly smoke graphics people sometimes get. I recently upgraded to 3.6.9 and am now getting this problem. I applied mp-710_effects, mp-710_models, and mp-710_adveeffects, and put them in my main Freespace 2 folder. This did not correct the issue as it normally does, and I'm still stuck with it. Can someone help me out, it's not very aesthetically pleasant to play the game this way.

those smoke effects are out soon - the latest stuff is using firey particle effects that can be obtained around the board.

basically the mediavps are way behind at the moment, and once 3.6.9 mediavps are "finalized" and ready, all these types of issues will go away.

The mediaVP patches fix the ugly smoke problem, but only if you install them correctly.  Put them in the same folder as the rest of the mediavps.

There definately seems to be a larger dosage of n00biness newbish-ness around the forums lately. That must mean more people are getting turned  on to the project.

Despite my low post count, I actually don't believe I'm a "n00b" seeing as how I've been playing Freespace since it was released back when I was a youngin'.

Anyway, since neoterran said they're getting rid of the issue altogether, I'll just make do.

There also definitely seems to be a larger dosage of snappishness around the forums lately.  It's probably a case of the Mondays - more specifically, the post-Super Bowl Monday.

Peter Gibbons: Let me ask you something. When you come in on Monday, and you're not feelin' real well, does anyone ever say to you, 'Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays'?
Lawrence: No. No, man. ****, no, man. I believe you'd get your ass kicked sayin' something like that, man.

If I could, I'd stab you in the face with a knife through the screen for saying that. You're lucky I can't do that.

It's not that we have "The case of the Mondays" (Jesus, who says that?), it's that we're all rabid frickin' looney from the start.

No... This community went from Nice -> Indifferent -> Insulated. There's a lot of resentment of the n00bars. Including using that term.

Maybe we should just tell them to use the search function or something.

didn't mean it in an insulting way. post edited. I'm just saying i'm seeing a lot more problems with people who, like you, haven't installed the patches correctly, or havent' fully read the freespace faq. just becasue you played retail a long time back doesn't mean you have the SCP set up right. It's not that easy to set up if you're just getting into it.

As an aside, I hate the terms 'n00b', 'noob', 'newb', 'newbie', and derivatives and believe in ~90% of cases they are used in an eletist, disparaging and arrogant manner that only acts to show the irrational superiority-complex of the word-user.

IMHO, there's a difference between newbie and noob.  I subscribe to this interpretation of the terms:

Agreed.....

and most people who call others 'n00bs' are themselves n00bs too.

Hmmm... should I n00b this thread from orbit? It's the only way to be sure..... ;)

It doesn't seem to be having much use.

That's because I'm still deciding, things seem calm enough at this moment, as long as an argument doesn't ensue, there's no point to locking :)

Anyway, n00bing from orbit would probably just start a load of new threads... ;)

Anyone notice that a n00b is a boon in reverse??????
