so anyway, i was toying around with inferno in FRED. i found there was a "earth" model, and so i placed it, and saw nothing. i moved it around a bit, and somehow i got it into view (by moving it however million miles away...). turns out when i placed it infront of me, i was inside it since it was a hollow model. i'm trying to do that again for a background for a later mission i might make. any sugestions?
-
You want to make a mission inside the Earth model?
AFAIK, the Earth model was put in merely to skybox a "3-D" planet as a background, not to be put into the mission proper.
-
i know. thats what i'm trying to do, to place it so far away that is looks like a background. but it's so friggin' huge that i can't do that...

Why don't you open up the final Inferno mission in FRED and see how those guys did it. (I think the final battle is above earth???? I could be wrong though???? :nervous: :sigh: )

how the hell am i supposed to do that? all i got are a couple .vp files and in the missions folder in my infr1 folder it's just a bunch of backups that arn't .fs2 files

Use VPview or VPview 2.0 from Karajorma's FAQ site to extract the mission files from the VP's

Zoom in on the model. Then move it to the side. Keep zooming in and moving it, etc.
-
Mission inside the Earth model would be interesting... I.E. a new race or something that strip-mines planets from the inside out... or something sweet like that.
-
I think it would be interesting if there was a Terran mining operation in a small fringe planet, like Aeous Affair. Then you would fly through and stuff.

that would be cool, but heres the thing with space sims: all the models are completly hollow, having only a very thin layer of pixels (or whatever) as the walls. now these pixels are one-way viewed, meening you can only see them from outside the model. if you go inside, you will see literally nothing but the edges of the polygons.

...so i choose one of these? cause they don't work...(can't create image during installation, so the whole thing just shuts down)

jsut problem after problem with me... :(

*Shrugs*
Works fine for me??
:nervous:
Anyone got any ideas?

Well it would be stupid to have a mission inside the earth.pof anyway, it should use an Earth thing with caverns. Plus, skyboxes are transparent so you would just see mirrored versions of the maps.
-
Disable "show model" and "show wireframe". Earth should appear as a green dot. Then you can place the dot wherever you want.
-
the dot only meens the center of the model so it aint much help
-
It's not like it becomes smaller or anything. :p
-
it's odd, last time i tried it i got to see the whole, model, but i put is 10000000+ away from the center and i see nothing. even when i opened up the last inferno level. (of course i do have show model and stuff turned on)
-
"Show model" only enables you to see the cockpit of your fighter ingame.
-
by "show model" i ment in FRED, under the "View" tab

The Earth model appears in the second-to-last R1 level, called Nemesis. But I don't think you'll see it there either. I don't believe skyboxes appear as physical models...
-
It's not a skybox, it's one large spherical model placed very far away.
-
I thought it was a skybox...
*checks mission*
So it is an actual model... I'd heard before that it was skybox. Weird.
-
It could never be a skybox as it was made before the FS2 source code was released.
-
It was once for Retail, remember?
-
R1 still is really.
-
I was talking about the Inferno mod in general... On that subject, it was once for FS1.
-
that explains the sounds
-
Actually none of the FS1 INF data was ever used in any of the FS2 versions.
-
The original Gigas actually works in FS1, IIRC.

They did that one already. It was called "Descent" and "Descent 2" and "Descent 3." :p
-
lol that's what I was getting at.
Descent... with Shivans!
-
You're better off trying to mod Descent 3 itself than try to do that here.
-
Well, the source code for Descent 1&II is available... D3 I dunno. And yes, a Shivan "robot" model would be very interesting (remember those glowing knives, the melee attacks, and the beam weapon in hallfight)?
BTW, some of the coding for Descent can be found in FreeSpace.. there was (used to be) more than one reason FS1 was called Descent: FreeSpace. They changed their minds on the storyline.
-
No, the source code to D3 has (sadly) never been made available, and most likely never will be.
-
20 years from now, someone cracks the D3 code... and no one cares.
Now, if we had the D3 code now, it is possible that a version of D3 would be around in 20 years.
The irony is sickening.
-
that's why open source is cool.
or even better..... close source a program for it's commercial life, and when it ceases to be making money, open source it.
-

No. The FS universe had nothing to do with the Descent storyline. It was simply for advertising.

I don't know where I got that from, but it was somewheres here, I think. And you will find parts of code pasted from Descent... unless I (and everyone on that thread) was being lied to.
-
No, you weren't. For instance, there's a line somewhere in there about idenitfying an object as a "robot, powerup, hostage", etc. Obviously unused in FS, but just as obviously a Descent code.
And I do remember reading somewhere that Freespace was originally intended as part of the Descent storyline... something about finding the player's ship from D2 after it disappeared (I think).
-
...Exactly what I remembered hearing somewheres else on this board.. thx
-
I was talking about storyline & plot.
-
Speaking of Descent code in FS2, there's also a cheat that enables Descent-like physics in Freespace 2.
-
No, that is removed in FS2. It only works in FS1. (unless it was added back in SCP)
