I installed FS2 via the retail disks, and followed the freespace oracle FAQ to the tee.
This is my errorlog. I have disabled Data Execution Prevention, but that didn't do it.

Don't know what that means and I'm not great at this debug stuff but I can probably guess the first step. Run the debug build and post the last couple of lines out of the fs2_open.log in the data directory.

Ok 2 quick questions. First did you install OpenAL? Second what operating system you running on? After that it's over my head.
-
I ran the openal installer, and I'm running XP SP2.
I'm assuming this is the correct one...(http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/3079/openalmo3.jpg)
-
Well like I said that's as far as I can get you but should help the guru's figure it out.
You could try disabling all mods and the mediavps but I don't know if that has anything to do with that error.
-
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.
Please, any help guys... :)
-
I'm one of those "gurus" people talk about. I can't model, and I can't texture, so I help people with their installations.
did you update retail to 1.2?
If so, post screenshots of your freespace2 folder, your freespace2\data\tabes folder, and your launcher6.ini file.

[launcher]
exe_filepath = C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe;

active_mod = ;
...\data\tables is empty.

I'm certainly not a newb when it comes to windows or software, so don't hold back on anything technical.
EDIT: The launcher usually fails to start unless I delete the .ini also...
The launcher .ini I posted is one of many setups I've tried.
Thanks so much for taking the time to help, I hope companies continue to follow in the footsteps of Volition and release source code.
-
The first thing to try is upgrading the drivers for your sound card. But if that doesn't help any ... In the Launcher, go to the "Audio/Joystick" tab, and in the "Sound" drop-down select "Generic Software" as you sound device. See if that works any better.

I installed FS2 via the retail disks, and followed the freespace oracle FAQ to the tee.
I know this isn't very helpful, but in the future, you probably didn't install according to the FAQ, as there's not a word in there about my Installer, which I can tell you used.
What taylor said should probably help though.
-
That needing to delete the launcher.ini rang a bell so I did some searching. Came up with this thread. There's a lot of outdated stuff in there but if you go to the bottom that just might be the problem.

You mean this?
There is something wrong with your OpenAL install. Check c:\windows\system32 for either of these two files, and if you find them, delete them: ct_oal.dll, nvopenal.dll.
That was my first thought when I heard this.
you probably didn't install according to the FAQ, as there's not a word in there about my Installer
That will change in the next update. I just haven't had the time to fix all the stuff in the FAQ that needs doing.

I didn't mean to downplay the FAQ's effectiveness, it was instrumental in getting everything installed.
Deleting those two .dll's did the trick, thanks so much guys. Much appreciated. If I could only get my joystick working, id be in FS2 heaven. :D
-
In the launcher play about with the Force 0, force 1 and win32 options. If none of those work try setting your joystick as the preferred device from the Control Panel.
-
Actually its not an FS2 issue, its just the fact that its an older Sidewinder 3D Pro with questionable XP support.
-
As long as you have a gameport on your sound card (assuming your stick is the gameport version, of course), you should have no problem using the 3D Pro in XP. You should be able to add it as a "Microsoft Sidewinder (Autodetect)" in the Game Controllers config menu.

Never had any problem with the Sidewinder 3D pro on XP. Went through 2 of them playing FS2. Using Sidwinder Precision pro now but would go back to the 3D pro in a heartbeat. If windows doesn't set up the joystick automatically download the drivers. If you can't find them I may still have a copy lying around.
-
Did you install a gameport separately from the standard sound card drivers? I went to fry's to just get a cheap 12.99 pci soundcard that included a gameport, but I can't get the joystick to detect. I used the same setting as Mongoose, but it refuses to see the stick.
I've got an E-MU 0404 (Proteus X) that I use for headphones, so I don't need the sound card drivers.
-
Does the gameport show up under hardware manager? I just plugged the joystick in. Not even sure if I installed the drivers or just used the default XP ones.
-
Yeah, but it says it can't free up enough resources for the "Standard Game Port". Screw it, I've had enough, its time for a format/vista install.
