Title: for some reason I just started playing ecco again
Post by: Bobboau on February 14, 2007, 04:31:52 am
Ecco 2, the Genesis game, what the **** were those people on when they came up with the plot for this game?
dolphin vs aliens
I found this video (http://www.ecco-darksea.com/video/ecco2_mcd_full.avi) that sort of sums up the first game.

Ecco 2 is pure awesomeness put into a cartridge.

Greatest plot ever for a Genesis game. Too bad the ending is vague as to what happens to Ecco afterwards.

Is Ecco 2 the one with Atlantis and timeportals and weird aliens made out of a string of spheres flailing around?

see what you missed out on.
from what I gather the story takes place on earth many hundreds (thousands?) of years after humanity was wiped out (or at least human civilization) after losing a war against an alien race known only as the vortex (the names used in the game are all like this dolphins and whales are known as 'singers' sharks are the 'hungry ones' ect, it's all from the dolphins point of view and they name things by there most prominent feature), sence then the vortex have been using earth as a quick easy source of food and every 500 years when there is a clear hyperspace window they ravage the land and sea sucking all life within a given location into a huge vortex (probly were they got the name).
you start out as a more or less ordinary dolphin and due to dumb luck you are the only survivor of a Vortex culling. having no idea what the **** just happened to your pod, you go on a quest to find them. you meet an orca who tells you to go to the arctic to find a blue whale who tells you about the 500 year cycle and to find this thing called the Astarite. you find it and it's a 300 meter long double helix of spheres, and apparently is superintelligent and has weird powers it tells you about the ruins of Atlantis and the time machine the built to escape into the past when they realised that they were going to lose the war, you need to go back in time 55 million years to colect a globe that the Astarite lost eons ago, and it turns out he lost it when you took it from him, once you get it you are pulled back to the present and the astarite tells you how to calibrate the time machine to go back to the moment of the culling and he gives you all sorts of super powers, like the song of destruction and the ability to breath under water, and with this you go back to your bay and get caught in the vortex sent across the galixy to an alien planet were you have to fight off hordes evil four armed insectlike fish people until you get to the queen, whom you promptly destroy, and then you rescue your pod and take the hyper tube back to earth.
and that was Ecco 1
the sequel was more of an invasion, the queen followed you back to earth and she is setting up a new hive, and you do a **** load more of time travel (go to the future were dolphins can fly and have telekinetic powers, and go to the vortex timeline were earth has been striped of life to get some more of the asterite's balls back) and the last level is like a dolphin assault on an alien foothold on the sea floor were you lead a bunch of dolphins in an attack on there new hive.

now as I was saying, what the **** were they smokeing?
most people started playing this game thinking it would probly be some cute dolphin game and then they find it's this creepy, dark, and bezar scifi drama. there are so many "oh my god I don't want to go in there" and "oh my god what the **** is that THING!" moments (and combinations of the two) it's great

and yes it is unceaseingly hard as ****, this mostly comes from the way you have to hit two diferent button in proper sequence to be able to do things, like the charge song you have to hit the charge button and the quickly before you do your charge, hit the sonar button, and you have to do this while aiming at were your target is going to be and hitting the c button repetedly to move fast enough to be able to doge there attacks.

(...) the last level is like a dolphin assault on an alien foothold on the sea floor were you lead a bunch of dolphins in an attack on there new hive.(...)

No, no, no!

Don't be fooled by the credits, the game continues. After reverting the Vortex Queen into a larval state the game still continues.

Spoiler:
You are then sent by the Asterist to go to Atlantis (City of Forever) to find the time machine before the Vortex Queen can and destroy it. However what happens is that the Vortex Queen uses the machine (if either after or before Ecco I have no idea, but given that you sort of beat the Vortex Queen to it, I assume after which is a bit confusing) to go back in time, but she "finds creatures she could not rule over" and integrates with the rest of life on the planet. Ecco however does not destroy the time machine as the Asterist told him and uses it and "dissappears into the tides of time".

*Snip*
Ah, I see. Thanks. The only time I really ever played it was with a game-genie, so me and a few mates were jumping around the game to random points, breaking sections of it and doing all this weird  **** that combined for one hell of a surreal gaming experience, but unfortunately didn't work towards revealing the plot too well.

It's on WiiVC, correct? Does anyone have it?

I'd considered it, but opted for F-Zero instead.

Ah, I still have this on my Megadrive :D

It indeed ridiculously f'ing hard, but once you complete it (The first one anyway, never completed the 2nd one!) it feels great!

It was one deeeep game (Both figuratively, and literally ;))

No, people do actually appear in Ecco. At the very end of Ecco 2 right after the credits, some fishermen catch Ecco in their tuna nets and he ends up inside a tin a week later.
