Title: Freespace 1 in high resolution?
Post by: Objekt on February 17, 2007, 09:33:23 am
I reinstalled the original Freespace last night.  I last had it installed a couple of years ago, and I could have sworn I was able to get it to run in relatively high resolution, maybe 1024 x 768.  Now, it will only run in 640 x 480, which looks absolutely horrible on a 19" monitor.  Is there a trick to get it to run at high res, or is that memory a product of my febrile imagination?

My OS is Windows XP Pro SP2.  Not sure whether the other specs matter.

...Yeah, you have to have a 3dfx Voodoo card (or a card that can run Glide, 3dfx's version of DirectX and OpenGL )  There are 3dfx Voodoo emulators out there, but they can take some of your system resources whilst emulating, (just as long as there's enough to run the game, you'll be alright!) and don't always work properly...

I searched Google for 3dfx emulator (not many good results) and glide emulator (more found) and got these results:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/psvoodoo/

EDIT: Of course, that is just if you want FS1 to work.  If you want to play FS1 using FS2 Open's engine (better graphics!), I'd use FSPort, see next post for how to get that.
PS I'd recommend installing from the next post, over fiddling with the emulator.  Once you have it (FSPort) installed, then try the emulators if you want to.  :D

FS1 only did 640x480.  :v: didn't add support for 1024x768 until FS2.

Product of my febrile imagination it is!   :P

I must have been playing the ported version of FS1 using FS Open of some version.

... No, FS1 did support 1024x768, but Taristin from your other post (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,45494.msg927120.html#msg927120) may be right, it might only be a "stretching" effect.  But it was an option in the Launcher, I know that.  :)

There is no JRE 6 released yet. The download version at http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp is JRE 5.0, Update 11. If someone has JRE 6.0, it is a BETA.

That's news to me... nvm, read this (http://java.sun.com/javase/6/).... it's not BETA.  :p

That's for developers, not end users.

...It's working for me...
What the heck is it using, then?  I installed it, and all my Java apps run fine...  If it's not BETA, it's for developers, and it runs all the java apps, then why don't they release the normal version?  I'm
Okay, so Java SE is for developers, and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is for end-users?

As near as I can tell, Java2 SE is what used to be the Java Development Kit, or JDK. The stand-alone JRE is at version 5.11, or, in their weird terminology, version 5, update 11. It doesn't have netbeans or a bunch of the other fancy stuff that the Java2 SE deal has. It's just for running java applets.

I may be wrong, but I think these are both JRE 6:

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

EDIT: found the problem, it's 'cause I have Java SE, so I read it off of Add/Remove... most ppl would have JRE, you're right...
...
1st, un-install all Java runtime environments older than version 6 (not to be confused with version 5 update 6)  - ie, if it doesn't say "Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6" in Add/Remove Programs (in Control Panel)

If you're too lazy to scroll down, I've copied the button for the java.sun.com download over onto its own page:

Thx, can use that maybe...
EDIT: Now using it, works great!
1st, un-install all Java runtime environments older than version 6 (not to be confused with version 5 update 6)  - ie, if it doesn't say something like "Java (TM) Runtime Environment 6" in Add/Remove Programs (in Control Panel)
*RESTART COMPUTER*
2nd, install JRE 6: http://www.fsoinstaller.com/getjre.html
3rd, download & install: http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/java/javautilities/javautilities.exe
-If you have the FreeSpace 2 Retail CDs, jump down to "Retail install" to save time, then come back and do number 4:
4th, download & run (double-click): http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/java/FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar
-Go to the "Using the Installer" section below (under the "Retail Install" section).

EDIT2: @Turey, when you gonna incorporate instructions and a link for your wonderful java utilities (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/java/javautilities/javautilities.exe) on pg 1 of your thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html)?  ;)
