I was there for a day or two last summer, nice country but didn't see much. But damn, even though Malaysia is much richer then Indonesia, we sure are more relaxed AFAIK

Hah. They are totally screwed.
Bet the teenagers feel great about that one.
Seriously though, totalitarianism ftl. It may not be really totalitarian, but it looks like it's getting there...

Muslim countries are police states.

Actually, the Islam does not place the man above the woman.
The reason why the womans wear the... hat like thingys (sorry, im dutch) is because they think the man are weak and may be distracted by a beautifull woman.
-
See I'm all for bombing the **** out of their government buildings and helping rebels overthrow THAT government...

Ze noemen burkas

Tudong is the Malay version of the headscarf.
Malaysia's fine to visit...just don't go visiting the northern states (Kelantan, Terengganu), which is where most of the more crazy muslim stuff happens.
Besides, they're all amateurs: Brunei's been having a spy network of religious police for years now :P

Because sex is bad and bad and involves partial or full nudity? ;)

Where's the fun in that? :) Nah, I'm not going to that area of the country anyways - apparently Terengganu is quite a backwards region and at the opposite end of the country to where I'm intending on heading.

I always felt it was more a proprietry thing... 'No other man may look at this woman.'.
A lot of Muslim women support the idea of the veil for the reasons given above, but I'm inclined to agree with the indoctrination angle myself, though I'd need to see an unbiased report on sexual crimes commited in various countries to know whether there's any truth to it, and the chances of getting an accurate count is probably 0 (Not to mention that what defines a 'crime' sexually varies from country to country). Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if the veil had little, if any difference on the amount of gender-related crimes commited in various countries.

Plus the more shariah-tastic Islamic states tend to stone women for adultery rather than charge rapists, which rather skews things.
-
Yeah, but they also tend to stone or hang people at the drop of a hat for other crimes.
To me it's a cultural thing, and each country should be allowed to have whatever culture it pleases. Ok, yes, it's a bit unjust and a bit illogical, but no more than Jews wearing a kippah and having sidelocks or Christians wearing a cross around their neck. The only places I know of that enforce the head-to-toe burqa are Afghanistan, certain areas of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. In most other countries, even Iran, the burqa is more of a loose scarf thingy, as much a fashion accessory as anything, evidenced by the fact that Muslim women in Europe have demonstrated in favour of keeping it. It's part of their culture, and has been for a long time, so to get rid of it would be to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
-
The interesting bit about Malaysia is that the country has very distinct areas for muslims and non-muslims. The funny thing is in the cities, muslims are usually pretty open minded. A lot of muslim women don't usually wear veil (or tudong, in Malay), except special occasions like Ramadan and Puasa.
Tudong is the Malay version of the headscarf.

Small correction, Terengganu and Kelantan are in the western region of the peninsular. The northen region of the peninsular consists of Penang, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan and part of Pahang. You're right about not visiting those two states though, not if you're a huge sea turtle fan or researcher :D The majority of the fundamental muslims live in those two States. Otherwise, it's still a pretty country to visit :)
-
Sea turtles? Cool.
-
Yeah, giant sea turtles go to the shore of Terengganu every year to lay eggs :)
-

Is it a preserve?
-
It is. The government is working hard on the project to stop local people from consuming the eggs. Lots of fisherman and villagers by the shore aren't well educated enough to realize how they could potentially endanger the species by harvesting the eggs :)
-
I always thought that the burkha was originally established as a way from keeping raiders out in the desert from identifying the women so that they could take them away and do various unspeakables to them? And then it just evolved from that into a required thing.

Turtle eggs? Cool :P Didn't know that.
I was born there, but don't normally follow up on news there...although it was interesting when the Sultan of Terengganu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mizan_Zainal_Abidin) (my third cousin) became king of Malaysia.
-
Yes, very famous giant turtle egg laying shore. Malaysia has another famous animal -- Orang Utan on Borneo Island. Me a fan of animals :D
-
Me too. They taste like chicken, which, incidentally, is also an animal.
Nah, I'm just kidding; my cat probably doesn't taste like chicken.
