Title: This is Pushing it
Post by: Vengence on February 22, 2007, 07:38:50 pm
Hehe, I just had a bit of a creativity overload a few weeks ago and developed a new ship for my series which in turn spawned ANOTHER spin-off. Yeah, you all might not understand but I already have 1 original and 3 spin-offs of that one now. Ok, this here is the HAS/HC Fire Fox (Homeworld Alliance Ship/ Heavy Crusier). The F-F is an evolution of my Hurricane series of heavy cruisers. Now, this new spin off takes place 1150 years after the last, making the year 6200 CE or something around that. In that time, my heavily B5 inspired ship technologies became heavily inspired by Star Trek and stuff like that ;). No, there isn't REALLY dogfighting cap ships, just really fast and maneuverable ones... The firefox can move at 300+ meters per second and rotate a full 360 in 10 seconds. The single beam turret can basicly gut and cut and slice entire space stations apart ::). I was thinking of making a fan video depicting the power of this weapon: It cut a Death Star 2 in half :D

Yeah yeah, sounds overkill but we are talking some serious tech way beyond our understanding so I am being very liberal on what these babies can do ;7.

Ok, back to my ship: The name motif of naming ships after weather conditions died off because there weren't enough cool terms and nobody wanted a cap ship to be named "Breeze" or "Trinkle" or "Increase in tide!" so they changed the naming convention to alot of different stuff. So the Hurricane series died off and spawned new ones. The Firefox's most dastardly weapon (aside from the turret) are the terrifying subspace missiles. I saw something in the Wiki that talked about these, missiles that jump into subspace and exit near the target. If this works out, then what happens is that when these missiles are fired, they reapear under capital ship shields and damage the ship directly. That is where the Pierce Shield flag comes in. The missiles are fast firing and have a huge payload so even the most advanced alien ship will eventually get obliterated unless they can stop those missiles.

Lastly, this is where I have to wait for the SCP to complete their work on fully functional bump maps. I may have missed it so don't kill me for that. The images will tell the rest:

Profile image: The Fire Fox is half the size of the older Hurricane models but hundreds of times stronger, and 5 times faster (350m/s) and turns much faster.

Closer image: This is a close up of the current skin. Nice huh?

Lastly: For this model to truly become what it was imagined to be, it requires bump maps. The difference is absurdly huge so this is a must!

yeah can't wait until we get normal mapping (and maps to go along with it) on Freespace SCP. That will really make the game look modern.

You can get some of that effect with more details on the texture and clever use of shinemaps etc, though.  Imperfect, but handy :)

I used the shine map trick before and it worked great! It kinda does imitate bump maps but I would someday like to see this come true.

He hasn't released it, he's making his own mod.

That will take a while since I'm so busy with other things. I still have plenty of fun playing around with my models though. I thought that I might as well post screens since you are interested.

Hurricanes tend to be nasty killers with these beams. One hit, even a destroyer will go down. Problem is the heavy cruiser will have to align itself.

Rear view of these nasty beasties.

Kkharacasian ships almost always use this motif: 4 horn/claws holding an orb. These corvettes are excellent at getting close and ripping capital ships apart with its single beam cannon in the orb. It also has 4 AA beams that have deadly tracking.

Lightning Destroyers are long range fire support ships that launch a killer swarm of missiles and plasma fire.

Closer

Ouch, a little too close to the enemy.

This is not what the usual dogfight should look like but thats what happens when you outfit a whole wing with beam weapons. These Bolt Adv Fighters are recklessly using up their reserves with the anti-capital ship beams against fighters.

Several Thunder Heavy Fighters fight dirty against a single Kkharacasian Dyretis fighter.

But why naming it Firefox ? Are you a firefox fanboy (firefox the browser) ? :p
Any released date to your work ?

The reason I gave it that name was simple: I like it. I also felt that it was a sort of interesting pun I guess but that just fits in with the new naming scheme I'll be using. These new names use an object name with an animal name right after it like Fire Fox, Comet Dragon, Thunder Wolf, or Ice Falcon.

I'm not giving any release date. Just know that it will probably be released before 5095CE and after 2007CE.

Wasn't there a movie that had a Firefox jet with lasers?  I think it was Russian, I'm not sure.

No idea, and I don't really care since this capital ship is not a jet and I use a particular -space- in between fire and fox. This was mostly to differentiate the names so please put a space in it.

I belive you mean Firefox with Clint Eastwood stealing eponymous Russian jet (based off the book)?

so, any release dates of a demo?
Title: Re: This is Pushing it

... What do you mean by demo?

This is all I have so far

-Hurricane V Heavy Cruiser (HRF-HC/5 Hurricane)
-Hurricane VI Heavy Cruiser (HRF-HC/6 Hurricane)
-Lightning Destroyer (HRF-D Lightning)
-Blizzard Heavy Interceptor (HRF/HI Blizzard)
-Thunder Heavy Fighter (HRF/HF Thunder)
-Bolt Adv Fighter (X-HRF/F Bolt)

-Novertis Destroyer (KD Novertis)
-Derringtis Corvette (KCv Derringtis)
-Dyretis Fighter (KF Dyertis)

Consider this, I'm missing these ships:

Homeworlder ships-
Tornado Cruiser
Whirlwind Bomber
Hail Storm Carrier
Enif Fortress
Diligent Freighter
Lance Supply ship

Kharacasian Ships-
Sovex Cruiser
Novaxis Bomber
Pirafaxi Heavy fighter
ect ect ect

Jha Oull ships-
Malak Heavy fighter
Kaishidash Heavy Cruiser
Icenitorias Battleship
dozens of other ships

Taimari ships-
Octillian Destroyer
Mercinipal Cruiser
Shnal Fighter
Reggali Bomber
ect ect

A demo would be far out unless you want to play an unbalanced technology and rigging test release. Even so I have nothing to host this stuff yet.

my, you finished a nice number of ships there. but you want enough ships for a TC.....
Title: Re: This is Pushing it
Post by: aldo_14 on March 13, 2007, 05:47:20 am
You only need 3 ships for a TC anyways, if you're feeling lazy - fighter, support ship, 'home' ship (carrier/cruiser/etc) :)

(oh, this'd be for a civil war - hence the same ships for both sides ;) )

that makes  the NTF a perfect excuse :)

The only way I can use that little excuse in my story is the hunting, persecution, and utter elimination with extreme prejudice of pirates and trade lane runners who haunt the space in the Homeworld Republic space.

This topic got off track but I don't care anymore. In my story there are 3 perspectives. The first puts you in the shoes of a 1st Fleet Primary pilot who stays relatively close to home and hunts pirates. Eventually the hunting stops after a horrid event. The second perspective puts you in the place of a 3rd Fleet Primary pilot who fights the massive space battles and patrol the extreme expanse of beautiful scenery and witness stuff the 1st perspective could never have seen. The 3rd perspective has you playing as a Jha 'Oull alien performing diplomatic escorts, pirate killing, conspiracy smacking, and stopping mysterious invasions by rogue Taimari admirals. Eventually you Jha 'Oull will be transferred to the Homeworlders as a volunteer pilot for their services and eventually all 3 perspectives will come together and sew the story together into a single whole.

Homeworlder ships are the fastest and most maneuverable with lots of firepower but no shields and above average armor ratings.
Jha 'Oull ships are well armored and very strong with good shields and have acceptable speed but low missile storage capability.
Kharacasian ships have very high forward velocity but low maneuverability. Their strong shields and beam weaponry are to be feared.
Taimari ships are nightmares to combat. They are fast, powerful, and heavily shielded. But they aren't very good pilots.

homeworlder's=fs1 ships?

i see....

No, if you compare them to FS1 they will easily out run and overpower FS1 ships. Their basic fighter has as many guns as a herc and has twice the missiles with more than twice the speed. Just no shields.

like my tweaked SF basilisk. top speed of 1000 ithout afterburner+8 gun mounts. kill the sath in a minute when i pumped up the weapons.

That is simple code and pof modifying. Besides... a Sath probably wouldn't stand a chance against a Fire-Fox... Then again nothing would survive Ascended Taimari ships. Their ships are nightmares... imagine Ori but faster, stronger, smarter... and dag gone smaller. Their destroyer is only 400 meters long but chances are (given my story's advancing nature) in the last piece of time line the Taimari ships can gut a Sath in one shot. So far their ships are only concepts right now but I am considering showing a simple pencil art.
