Not sure if this is where I should post about this, but I've had some problems with the open source installer. I'm a big newbie to this so bare with me. First I ran the installer and it when through it's long process of downloading and updating files and seem to finish ok. I can open the launcher once, but if I close out of it and try to open it up again nothing happens. I have to reboot until it opens again (I've checked the running processes and didn't see that it was still running). Also, the launcher is pointing to the fs2open.exe file, but when I hit run from inside the launcher I get a windows error message saying fs2open.exe has encountered problems. I've tried to disable all the enhancements and have it run like FS2 retail, but I still get the error. Does anyone have any ideas?

Can you give us a screenshot of your Freespace folder please so that we can check if you have all the right files and they are in the right places. :D

Thanks for the welcome Wobble! Here is the screenshot of my directory. (hopefully I attached it right). Also. you'll noticed the errorlog.txt in the screenshot. Here's a small portion of what is in it. I thought it might be relevant.

Did you install OpenAL?
If you already have.. then could you use launchers 'browse' button and select the debug build and run try running that. That should generate fs2_open.log named file to data directory. Either copy paste the last ten or so lines from it here - or upload the file somewhere.

Thanks for the reply Wanderer, I did a retail install of FS2 and installed the 1.02 patch, then ran Turey's open installer. Not sure if that installed OpenAL or not. Not sure what OpenAL is to be honest :). I'll try to point it to the debug exe and post the log from that once I get off work. Thanks!

Wanderer, I believe I found the OpenAL installer you were refering to here http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/latest/OpenALwEAX.exe
No, I didn't install that. I'll definitely try that and let you know how it goes.

The online installer should offer to send you to the OpenAL website and grab yourself a newer copy of that file.

I don't remember it asking me that. I downloaded a copy from here. http://developer.creative.com/articles/article.asp?cat=1&sbcat=31&top=38&aid=46
I assume that's the latest copy. Can't wait to try this out!

Hmm.... looks like it is, good work, pilot.

Wanderer, I installed OpenAL and still no joy. I ran the debug exe and this is what it gave me in the log (just the last few lines of it).
"Searching root pack 'D:\games\freespace2\tango3_fs2.vp'
Searching root pack 'D:\games\freespace2\warble_fs2.vp'
Found 24 roots and 12534 files.
Setting language to English
Initializing OpenAL...
Using 'SB Audigy 4 [EC00]' as OpenAL sound device..."
I've tried all the different sound devices and it finally ran! but only when i selected "no sound" :(

Maybe you need a sound driver update? Check Creative's website...
