Has anyone here played it/still play it? I'm just starting it after letting it sit on my shelf. Is it any good?
-
It looks OK. All I really know is that it killed two monitors. Thats why I'm hesitant it try it.
-
I enjoyed it, personally, but my disc has gone MIA.
-
Eh, maybe make sure you've downloaded all patches first then...
My brother played it (2/3rds of it, anyways...) Apart from being a little buggy, it's okay. (Maybe the patches fixed the bugs by now, idk.)

Have you still got the CD Key and COA?

It's brilliant. Turn on the slim GUI option, crank up the graphics (the game is very smooth, so far as I know) and enjoy.
I recommend playing on Hard if you're good at RTS - it'll be a good challenge, and so much more satisfying.
I'm rather fond of the story, the characters are quite likeable (even if the accents can be annoying), and the cutscenes are brilliant. The music in the last few missions was damn good as well; the final moments of the game had me on the edge of my seat.

Why? :p
-
'Cause if you do, then you could bittorrent it w/out it being illegal, I think... just use your CD-key when it asks. I think. Maybe someone else can say for sure. I do believe the ownership resides with the COA, as long as you don't go out and give the disc to anybody.

I never really got into GC2, myself.
-
...that's why I wanted spoilers! :D

If I knew how to use spoiler tags, I'd give you some.

I really, really like Ground Control, and got it pretty early in it's life.
I only recently got hold of GCII, and although I find it to be a nice solid RTS, I think it loses all the feel that made GC so good. Also you can now build units, which in my opinion just utterly ruins the whole concept of Ground Control is the first place.
So while I think GCII is pretty good, I much prefer the first one.
Although with the first one, I have this strange problem for the entire time I've had XP, where nine times out of ten the briefing voice files would skip till the next one has to play. The patches do nothing. It's really annoying, but that's the only problem I've ever had.
-
I've just played through the first three missions in the Terran campaign, and I must say, wow, kickass. There is definitely a huge strategy element there, moreso than other RTS games. Granted you can "build" units now (you drop them in by dropship), but that adds a new dynamic for me, where I can have a continuous battle with constant reinforcements and pincer movements. Great fun IMO :) I'm sorry I didn't give this game a better chance when I first played it.
-
GC2 is a great game except for the story wich could've been better. It's a shame you cant play with the Terran Empire. :( Great looking hover tanks! A shame there's no GC3, a real shame. Also if they (the makers) could, it would've been interesting if they added a option so you can play in the style of the first GC, with only what you have.

Try running in Win '98 compatibility mode?

I absolutely loved this game - for the gameplay and optimized engine.
Weren't GC I & II released for free a year ago or so? I remember there were two games, an original and a sequel, that I had actually bought and loved, that were then released for free a few years down the line. Felt kinda silly, but I enjoyed them enough not to complain. Or maybe I'm thinking of the MechCommander series... I that that was it, actually.

GC1 was released for free; perhaps you're thinking of the expansion pack for it? (Dark...something or other)

No, it was MechCommander - check out the external links section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechcommander

I just checked for the website, its http://www.mechcommander.org/

MechCommander was OK...rather dull though, IMO. Mostly just, again, clicking on enemies and waiting for them to die. The mech's didn't even circle-strafe! That's what I really missed - the mech's just stood there and shot at each other, and did nothing else or Mech-like.

I'm pretty sure that never worked .. :(

Use VirtualPC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx).
