Title: Opinions on model please.
Post by: starbug on March 10, 2007, 09:16:02 am
I was wanting an opinion on my first model. it is a freighter, based on a the UEF transport from supreme comander, i was inspired to create a new fleet based on modern warships and the human ships from SG1, this is my first atempt. comments please.

Uhh wasn't your first model the GTD Icelus?

Anyway, I think it's a cool model. I could just imagine a load of cargo containers lined up through that spine there.

But I think it needs more detail.

yeah it was, what i mean is this is my first model since doing that for Inferno, so many years ago, infact it was supposed to be meant for small victories before it was canceled. i have completely forgotten  the things i learned back then so i am back to basics.

i will add detail, this was just the basic model.

This looks more like a lower LOD (maybe LOD 2 or 3) than an actual model (no offense).

It seems a poor defended freighter with minimal armour....

If creating such a vessel was your true intention, nice work. :)

I get a SG-1/2001 (bc304/Discovery) feel and it just doesn't mesh well IMHO.

I suggest you take that section right after the bow and duplicate THAT as many times as you want for containers/space and dump that way too fragile looking connector part. That's what I would do for the most part. Might want to work on propulsion later.   :D

Good start though!

Thanks for the comments guys, i want to redo the engine part, need to have a little thinky about that, but i also started work on a cruiser last nite, insperation for it just came to me, now for what i am doing i am basing it on the mordern navy, ie a cruiser is bigger and more heavily armed than a destroyer i am i right? Now it has been i long time since i have used truespace and i forgot how much of pain it can be, but i am wanting to detail along the side, i indentations for where the windows go, for when i figure out how to texture it, how would i do this, also how do you know how big to make it in truespace?

Cruiser's looking good. But the front is looking a bit bare compared to the aft. I trust it will look better when you've done the minor details.

I definetely like the cruiser... the transport would be great when you add cargo pods to it.

Interesting start. Definitely needs some cargo pods on those hex blocks... and lots more detail. I would start with the engine 'lump'. Make some engine details and some exhaust nozzles etc. This can quickly give a model a more finished feel. Also...if you are thinking of making a series of ships, then the same drive module could be re-used. Add 2, 3 or 4 modules to a large capship ... that sort of thing!

ok i have managed to get some detail on my cruiser still working on it, will post a screenie when i have got a bit more donr, and i completely redid the front section of my freighter but unfortunatly when i clicked on save truespace 3.2 just crashed, now i can't load the file from my last save at all, its sayin the file is corrupt! 2 hours of work gone! i am just a wee bit pissed. Just a precaution i have now made 3 copys of my cruiser to be safe. Does anyone else keep getting crashes with truespace 3.2? i have had 3 today no error messages cept for the standard xp one, Truespace 3.2 has encountered a serious error and has had to close etc. i may have to change to another modelling program

i get rather in frequent crashes with it, but i think it's because my computer is messed up from the massive number of programs on it.........

I have got a wee bit more done, not much as i have been very busy with work but i thought i would show, i know it ain't much and some of the detail along the side is hard to make out but it is there. So comments please.

As for my freighter i will have to start from scratch, truespace keeps crashing every time i try and do work on it. Right i am now off to get ready for the very last SG1 which better not be anticlimactic

are those guns seperate objects, name acordingly? (turret01, turret-fp-01, ect)

other wise you'll have turrets doing nothing.

bob's sig has a link containing a PCS tutorial with autogen, and kara's sig has the fsfaq. which also contains a tutorial.

Good job with it. Digging the bridge but I think you'll have to get rid of those square cut-offs (or is that just rendering incorrectly?). I really like those two spikes there.

Can you post the old freighter file? (in a non-max format) .3ds is fine. I want to mess with it.

In agreement, although max format would be perferable here. It has some very good potential to it.

are you referring to the bits along the side?

Yes. On the side of the bridge and things behind the spikes..

ok here is the Cob file, i don't know how to convert it to a 3d-max file though. i'll warn you know it is an early version, just the front section and middle, it is missing the engine part. as my other more complete file has corrupted.
