The only reason i learned about the hlp was that i used the prototype24 freespace2 torrent which is pretty much the longest living torrent i've ever seen(the first time i used the prototype24 fs2 torrent was back in 2004, and it's still got a good amount of seeders). Prototype24 text file included in the torrent had an extremely tiny reference to the hlp. Googled, hlp, arf-yarf-bark, found hlp and started my half a year long lurking session with my first post in the fsport forum.
Before all that, volitionwatch was kickass but i never even lurked on those boards, just always checked out the main site occasionally, it's cool to know that hlp and vwatch were both existing at one time in history(they're the big boys out of freespace sites).

Read about the Babylon Project on local gaming magazine, downloaded it, and then googled for more.. Found TBP subforums and HLP.

Trough looking about FS2 on Wikipedia, saw the images there of the SCP and checked the links about it.
-
I first heard about FS2 in a article about the rise and fall of space games. Then I looked for it on HoTU, and when I downlaoded it, in the readme there was a reference to the SCP site, and there was A link to Hard-Light.net
-
Good ol' Google, IIRC... although I did also get the prototype24 torrent.

karajorma's faq.
ditto
-
Also Karojormas FAQ and the reading of the HLP-Wikki.

14 months ago (or something like that) I re-installed FS2 on my new PC (last time I played FS2 was in 2000). Googled for add-ons and found HLP.
-
Good ol' Google, IIRC... although I did also get the prototype24 torrent.
Yeah prototype24 torrent was a great all in one package. It included the cds and the fs2 1.20 patch as well (finding a working link for the fs2 1.20 patch is sort of a ***** to find). It also included something else, but i didn't think it necessary, (perhaps a no-cd patch for fs2 it was if i'm correct).

I actually heard about HLP long before I signed up. I join the official Volition board after I got into FS2 and the standard practice appeared to be send modders to HLP but send FREDders to the FRED forum (After shouting at them to do the walkthrough! :D ).
After a while though the VBB got so spam heavy that I signed up with HLP. Once the VBB was closed I moved over here and signed up with VWBB and Sectorgame.

I feel old :(
-
by accident... I think.. I forgot how I got here actually..
-
When VBB was going down, everyone was talking about running off to HLP.
I went with them.
-
VBB. Came here in the Great Migration.
(Never heard HLP referred to as "the hlp" before :D).
-
IIRC, saw some of the mods was pimping HLP at VBB around the time it was getting closed.

Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ.

The only thing I can assume is that someone posted a link to here on the Descent Bulletin Board (http://www.descentbb.net) at some point in the past, since I have no recollection of actually discovering the site myself.

It's actually been so long that I don't exactly remember. I think signed up once under another name before I was Flipside, but then re-joined about a year later under a new ISP.
I might have got here from Sectorgame, that's the most likely.
-
Found link on SCP site.
-
Freespace Oracle.
I can't quite remember when I found it, but it was a considerable amount of time before I registered. I didn't really lurk or anything, I just used it to get the HOTU version.
-
I was spending some time on GameFAQs's forums, and looked at the forums for FS2. One topic was talking about Inferno. I inquired as to what Inferno was and they pointed me here.
-
Hail the all-mighty disco Inferno FS2 mod.

My computer came with an FS2 demo. Years later I googled FS2 on a whim and found this place.
Oddly, my demo seems to have more missions than the demo listed on the wiki. I can't remember where it ends, but I clearly remember the defence of Enif Station in it. Also, when you wanted to quit, it displayed two advertisement screens, including an ugly picture of a Vasudan in a flightsuit.
-
I found it looking at the SCP site. Which I found looking at the Wikipedia entry on FreeSpace. Which I found because I wanted to see what Wikipedia said about my favorite game. Which I found in a package on my birthday. Which I asked for. Because I thought FreeSpace: The Great War (and even Silent Threat) was so awesome. Which I got at Best Buy for $14. Because it was a sequel to Descent. Do not argue with it being in the Descent series!
-
I'd just say it's a sequel as in the continuing of the descent name used to sell games. Of course everyone probably knows the descent name was for sales in the fs arena.
But, the descent name on fs1 definitely let you know it had something to do with the makers of descent in making fs1.

It all started when I found a space simulation on Gamespot that had a superb rating, exactly what I was looking for. From reading the reviews, viewing the screenshots, and most importantly playing the demo... I was hooked with FS2.
I bought the game from Amazon a few months later. For nearly two years I played the game off and on, never losing interest. It wasn't until I graduated from high school that I became curious; I wanted to know if there were any updates or mods that I could use to make FS2 look like a modern computer game. It wasn't until my first semester of college that I ran a search on Google and stumbled across some gorgeous pictures of what looked to be a high-poly GTF Perseus: http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/derelict/index.php (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/derelict/index.php)
Thanks to WMCoolmon's gallery, I found the HLP website and familiarized myself with the FSSCP universe.

i played FS1 when it came out and wondered if there would ever be a sequel.
-
I really don't know...I think i did a google search for Freespace 2 Community site and this was what came up so i followed the link and wound up here....I'm glad i did
-
Many years ago, I was a regular visitor to the Volition-Inc and Volition Watch forums, and there were many links to Hard Light Productions regarding user-made campaigns and Freespace discussion. I could never remember the URL, though.
-
www.3dactionplanet.com/hlp , IIRC.
-
Google search on the dreaded "Freespace 3" led me to the old SCP website. I found my way here from there.
-
I think I found it from some Homeworld forum sites three or so years ago.

Googled "freespace 2 modding forum"

Wikipedia link, and SCP

Used to post on the VBB until they got shut down. Basically everyone there made the exodus to HLP, and here I am. Stopped posting after not too long and pretty much lurked since then.
-
I followed the VWBB fairly closely after I purchased FS1 in '98 and was around there and here before Blackwater Operations was even started.
So yeah, I didn't so much find HLP so much as I watched it being started.
I'm so very old.
-
It's ok, most of us are younger than you. I wish i was part of the vwbb, but i wasn't. Freespacewatch sort of got shutdown a little too early in my opinion. I mean around 2003-2004, since the start of it. It wasn't around too long. Why did it get shutdown really?
-
I drank some lemonade that had been sitting out a little too long. When I awoke the next day, this site was set as my homepage...
