well hay i couldnt get a good shot of midtown manhattan (nyc)! hell i was bored lol. say that thats a small town. u never know how the cities 300 yrs from now gonna look. even in star trek the cities arent that greatly diffrent. the pics r just clearer and its san fransisco. imagine if it was midtown and the wtc was still there.

lol
typical US responce:

cmd: UFO! Instead of talking to them lets shoot it down! arm the SAM

*sound of missile firing*
*sound of missile harmlessly exploding against the hull of the Galatae*
*sound of heavy laser bombardment*

Something does not feel right about something the size of the Galatea, and as bricklike, moving through atmosphere.

Its like a Vogon cruiser: Its just hanging there in exactly the way that large Galatea shaped bricks don't.

The Orion has no perspective on it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

i was also going to say, that yea in terms of ur perspective, remember, it also depend son howu view it, imagine it was just hovering pointing somwhat south? like in the image. if i had a overhead shot like the one u made, it would have looked better as u said. but its cool.

I know it depends on how you look at it. However, having worked with this type of thing as much as I have, that Orion would have to be a lot further away from the viewer to reduce the perspective so far. So far as to be almost invisible, in fact. But admirable effort, nonetheless.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I think I missed that last render you were referring to. Got a link handy?   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Edit: Never mind, found it.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Only thing that I'd be wondering...wouldnt somethign as massive as an Orion cause a wee bit of atmospheric disturbance?

Or is that just the coffee talking?

Well there's that too, Steak. I was referring more to seeing 2km of non-aerodynamic steel brick just floating above a city. Perhaps its floating on a AG pillow or something, but I doubt it considering the level of Terran tech in FS. Its just me over-analysing as usual.

I don't think an Orion could fly around in an atmossphere like that either. Unless it's about to crash into the ground, of course.

true. maybe orions cant land like that. either it has anti-gravity drives, or it has some internal extensions that come out of the ship to assist in landing or flying, or maybe the ships dont land on planets at all.

right now the hecates the only ship with "wings"

I figure that there would be VERY few capships capable of atmospheric flight and landing. Things with wings could fly in atmosphere, but everything else would have to stay up on pure rocket power- feasible for smaller ships (Fighters and transports) but definitely not for a destroyer.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Maybe SOME cruisers... I wouldn't put it past an Aten to be able to fly in atmosphere and land.

...uhm...apart from that. Did you see in ST: Voyager how that ship landed? It just looked...ridiculous...

I dont think capships were designed to withstand gravitational forces, they would probably colapse from the strain...

I sure hope they're able to withstand more than one G  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)

I meant constant stress from the pull of a planet or the likes.

what bout independence day witht he alien ships? there the sizes of cities and they made it without breaking. how do u known or whos to say what technological advances in space flight have taken place since today? even inn subspace theres heavy grav-forces at work, and the ships are made to withinstand those stresses as well as assistence fron subspace drives internally.
