Title: Some advices needed for easy installation (and multiplayer purpose)
Post by: didli on March 16, 2007, 09:29:51 pm
Hi Everyone !
I need a little help in order to make a Lan Party with some friends : I must find a way to explain them simply (they're not really confident with computers) a way to install and configure Freespace2 for multiplayer purpose. So I follow this guide (http://www.fsinstallguide.com/index.php?id=22), quite clear and simple, and now I was wondering if I should run the Freespace Open Installer here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html) to keep my version up to date ? The fact is I don't know if the "enhanced freespace" as he called it in his guide could be updated with the freespace open installer ? It should help me a lot if it is possible !
Thanks in advance !
PS : sorry if I made some mistakes, french pilot here !

:welcome:

woo! French!

Je ne parle pas Francais bien.

I've never used the first guide, and the second one didn't work properly, so to confuse you even more, here is a third suggestion.

--------

Put these files (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/3.6.9.rar) into your main directory. These are the launchers, FRED, a debug build, and a normal build.

Make a folder called "mediavps" in your fs2 directory.

put these files in them:

http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/mp-710_adveffects.rar
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/mp-710_effects.rar
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/mp-710_models.rar

http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mvp368zeta/mv_zpack.zip

(unRAR as necessary)

Now, run the launcher you put in your main directory. Near the top of the window, there is a bar with a browse button next to it.

click the browse button

Find your FS2 directory if it didn't start there. Click the fsopen_3.6.9.exe type thing.

'apply'

'run'

(don't activate any features for multi unless you have double plus good system and network)

I forget how to make lan games, but I'm pretty sure you don't need anything special.

----

This isn't freespace 'enhaced' (although it is enhanced). The proper name is Freespace open, or just FSO. (FS enhanced = FSO).
these (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html) are the media vps. They make the game pretty. these (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44291.0.html) are the builds and launchers that make the game able to support the good graphics.

To update the game, simply replace the mediavps/builds/launchers with the more current version.

That's as simple as I could get it.

I would just say, download the DVD ISO and install from it.  DVD Forum (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,45835.0.html).  jr2 made a torrent for it, you should be able to find it in that forum somewhere.  Then you can just pass around the dvd and save everyone the bandwidth of all of you downloading it.

He already has everything, why should he download another 3.5 GB? And installers are nice to look at, but more trouble than they're worth IMO.

I called it enhanced because that is more descriptive than open. Glad you liked the procedure.

You don't need to run the installer---nothing has changed since I released those CD's. And all the files thesizzler mentions are included already.

That's what I didn't know, if he already had all that stuff or not.  If he did still need to get all that stuff, then why not just get the dvd?  It's the easiest way for a group of people to install it quickly.  But since he's already got the files he can just distribute those to everyone and they should be up to date.

You'll see references to "FSO" and "FreeSpace SCP" all over the internet. (...)but all the terms are referring to the same thing
(http://didli.free.fr/Images/Forums/mur.gif) How could I miss it, pff... !
Well, thanks a lot everyone ! And thanks to Huggybaby and his (choose: nice/great/cool) guide, I think we're ready.
I was wondering if it was necessary to run the FSOpen Installer because I thought I saw newer files (launcher ?) somewhere, but I'm probably wrong.
What is the use of it then ? Mods ? Update a Retail version ?
And just another one last question : Do we (me and my friends) all have to register here (http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/) with "pxo" thingy, or could we make a TCP/IP direct connect to start a multiplayer game ?
Thnaks again, all of you.
PS : The community made an incredible job with FSO, mods looks great and new features even greater. I'm so impressed ...

Registering is not needed for IP games. You only need to do it to host games on FS2NET or to play games hosted on FS2NET.
Playing on FS2NET is always a good idea though - it needs all the activity it can get

You can easily play FSO over a LAN. Simply press FS2 to enter the setup screen and pick multi. Turn off PXO. You might need to enter the IP Address of the server.

Playing on FS2NetD sorta defeats the whole point of having a LAN party but it does allow you to save your stats though :)

First timer here, too, with similar problems getting FSO installed. Namely, I can't seem to find a link to the FS SCP that doesn't give me a DNS error, including the one in the 2nd post above.

I've got retail FS2 installed, along with the 1.2 patch, as recommended in  this post (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html), but I get a corrupt .zip file when I try to use the installer in that post. I've tried to D/L the SCP by itself, but get DNS errors with those links as well.

I'm not really interested in any of the add-on campaigns as of yet...just wanting to get my install along the 3.6.9 SCP guidlines, with the mediaVP enhancements/710 packages. I figured I would run the default campaign before getting into other wars.

Does anyone have working links to the SCP 3.6.9 build and the mediaVP enhancements? Also, is there anything else besides thses files and OpenAL that is required to get me up to the latest enhanced SCP standard?

Many thanks for any help you may provide. I'm new to the FS2 scene and am really having fun with the stock FS2 campaign so far...can't wait to see what it looks like with all the bells and whistles.

Unfortunately you've picked a bad day to try to get SCP. Warpcore (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/) is down at the moment which means that none of the links on there will work.

Thanks for the info, karajorma....I'll check back later for the files. I'm having fun running FS2 in it's default config right now, so it's not a showstopper.

I do have a question while I'm waiting for Warpcore to come back up....I'm planning on getting SCP 3.6.9, OpenAL and the mediaVP packs to get my FS2 install up to current FSO standards. Is there anything else that I need to complete this task? I'm not really worried about add-on campaigns and the such right now...I can grab them later...just wanting to get my FS2 looking as good as the screens I've seen here at HLP for the time being. I figure after I complete the stock campaign, I can think about some of the addon, like FS Port and Inferno.

Again, thanks for any help provided.

As to what use Turey's online installer is, it's merely one option for getting the game installed on your computer, and will work whether or not you've already got the retail files installed.  Huggybaby's guide is another option, as is the DVD iso, or a full blown manual install, getting all the files by hand.  For a lan party I'd go with the DVD, since it includes Turey's online updater, but for one install I'd just use the online installer to get the most up to date version and any mods I wanted all in one run.  Huggybaby's guide introduces you a bit more to what's actually going on though and is probably a better learning experience than the other methods, and still easy enough for any newcomer to figure out.

Turey's installer was my original plan to install as it seemed to be the easiest for my situation....i.e., already having FS2 installed. But, every time I D/L it, it's gives me a WinZip error when I try to extract it. Also, it's listed as 38Meg in the post, but D/L's at 19Meg......so, I'm thinking it might be a corrupt upload or something. I was going to grab Huggybaby's guide/files, but I didn't want to have to get 1.2Gig of files if I didn't need them and it wasn't clear if Huggy's files were just the SCP stuff or FS2 bundled with it.

I wouldn't mind putting everything in by hand because I think it would give me a better understanding as to what actually goes into the FSO install....if I could find a list that tells me what needs to go where. I think I've got a decent grasp on it with the following:

SCP 3.6.9
OpenAL
Latest mediaVP packs (3.6.8 Zeta IIRC)

The 710 packs seem to be optional...for higher detail it seems from what I've read, although I could be wrong on that part.

Other than that...I have no idea. This is what I've gotten from a few days of reading/digging here at HLP.

The advantage of Turey's installer is that you can install just FS2_Open (And maybe the FS1 Port since you might as well play that) now and then just run it again later when you want mods.

Since you already have FS2 I recommend the installer over everything else. Unless you want to get into modding. In which case I recommend using the installer but then going through HuggyBaby's guide (and mine for that matter) so you can see exactly what it did and replicate it later when you start your own mod.

The 710's are only optional in the sense that all the media VPs are optional. If you've downloaded a VP you will need the appropriate 710 patch for it.

I tried to to Turey's installer from the thread here and from the SCP site, but every time I've downloaded it, it gives me a WinZip error....something about compression error 9 IIRC. I'm going to try to open it with WinRAR and see if it works any better.

Again, thanks for the help karajorma and the prompt responses!

I think you might be needing 7zip or a fairly new version of winrar, but I'm not sure on any of that.  He's had some issues keeping the file size low enough lately.

Thanks, chief...

I used WinRAR...works find with it....probably should have used it before I re-downloaded it 9 times... :hopping:

Got FSO up and running...looks great. I know there's probably some tweaking that I need to do on it, but I'm having too much fun enjoying it to tweak. Thanks to everyone that assisted me in getting FSO set up. I'm the "guinea pig" for some of my friends online on getting it set up....they wanted to see what kind of problems I encountered before taking the plunge to FSO.

Make sure you get them to register on here once they start playing. :)

And on FS2NetD so we can all play online instead of just leaving you guys secluded on your little lan.  :)  Some guys on the IRC channel are always looking for a good match.

Turey's installer was my original plan to install as it seemed to be the easiest for my situation....i.e., already having FS2 installed. But, every time I D/L it, it's gives me a WinZip error when I try to extract it.

I had to switch the .zip compression method from Deflate to Deflate64, as it helped keep the download size small. I didn't think WinZip would have trouble with it, as it's almost the same compression method.  :doubt:

Also, it's listed as 38Meg in the post, but D/L's at 19Meg......so, I'm thinking it might be a corrupt upload or something.

Oops. Fixed.

Thanks to everyone for their help in my installing endeavour.

Gotta say, from what all I've read here and the quick assistance I received, bunch of first class folks around here....

I'll/we'll check out FS2NetD soon...give you old timers some new blood to shoot at... :drevil:

Right now, I'm having fun trying the stock campaign out in FSO. I thought it looked pretty good before I installed the SCP, but it just totally blows me away now. I get good FPS, even with the mass mayhem that occurs just about every mission. Thinking about trying the FS Port to give me the background on the whole storyline.

Heh, play FSPort first, if you've got it...
