Title: What is a barrel...???

Hello guys !
(NB : surely my english is wrong..bad...terrible :D sorry, but i'm french :D)
I'm a new member on the forum.

I am translating the Karajorma's turreting tutorial, but i have a problem : i don't know what is a barrel  :rolleyes: :nervous:
"Now we have to make the barrel"
I have asked the same question to other french freespace2 fan, but they don't know either !
Can you tell me what is it please ??
I really need your help !! :( ;)

It means multiple things. In this context, it is the hollow tube in guns with hole in the other end and cartridge chamber in the other.

The bullet is charged through it by high pressure gas from the explosion inside the cartridge.

In this context, of course, there is no bullet, but it still refers to the extrusions from gun turrets or hull of a ship that shoot stuff into the direction they are pointing to. :)


Other meanings include an unit of volume, and it's different depending on which substance it's used to measure, and where. Oil barrel is 158.9873 litres, but UK beer barrel is 163.7 litres, US beer barrel is 117.3 litres, US non-beer liquid barrel is 119.2 litres and US dry barrel is 115.6 litres.

These are the most common meanings associated to this particular word. :D

The barrel is the cylindrical part of the turret from which the bullet comes out. In french, it would be the "tonneau de fusil" or "canon de fusil".

EDIT: uh... I was warned that somebody posted before me, but I couldn't see Herra's post after the warning... forum bug?

Little Rectangle (barrel) elevates up and down) connected to the base.

Understandably it shouldn't be funny with different languages and everything but I can't seem to help but chuckle at this topic. Yes the barrel is the shooty thing that moves with the turret.
