Just the other day I tried making my old copy of Starfleet Acadamy work and it kept screwing up (the screen kept going black and would only reveal in squares as the mouse passed over them, if you have any ideas, let me know.)
In any case, I remember thinking hey, my buddy used to have this game called Freespace 2 and it ruled. So I look on HOTU and whoa, there is a whole fricken community here!
This is AWESOME! Thank you so much for your effort and devotion. This is really amazing. It's days like this that made me wish I had stuck with my CoSci degree instead of branching into physics.
I just downloaded the HOTU version of the game as well as the 3.6.9 open executeable. Will this function properly if I go and get the VP files and the cutscenes or should I use an online installer ?
-
/me hehehe's at "freelancer 2"...
Well, welcome aboard. Mind the mess while we work out a few issues here, and enjoy your stay on HLP.
-
Oh, how I wish there was a Freelancer 2.... :(
Anyway welcome! I recommend the installer, its easier to use.
-
I'd say just go with the online installer.
-
arg, my bad. I did call it Freelancer. I have that as well... omfg it's awesome. Maybe one day they will release the source to the folks at lancersreactor and then we'll see a similar thing as the FSC project.
Of course I meant to say Freespace 2 and I will update my post right after this.
On a different note, what language to the coders use when adding things to the game ? I have a friend who is a programming major and he will help teach. I might just try to help out here and there instead of leeching off the talent of everyone else. I suppose I could make some ship models or something. Also, how would I go about creating a campaign (not that I plan to atm, but ... ) would I use FRED ?
I have a million more questions, but I'll poke around the wiki a bunch more and lurk here before I start boring you guys with them.
In any case, nice to meet you all!
-

This makes me feel bad about having to take it down for the rest of the month. :sigh:
Use what you've got until April 1st, then you can update with the Installer.

C/C++.

Yeah.
In any case, nice to meet you all!
Nice to meet you too. :)
:welcome:

Hello,
I just read your other thread about the installer and some other stuff.
I have the FS2 from HOTU. I read that it was a stripped down version... what is it missing and can I conceiveably get the stuff for it without waiting for the online installer to come back up? I also have the most recent SCP .exe files. Bandwidth really isn't an issue for me.
I'm kinda excited about playing the single player campaign...
Could I get the cutscenes and the new models etc... from somewhere ? Is there other stuff that's it's missing that I can't replace ?
-
If you have the new patched version from HOTU you mgiht as well get on and install the SCP without the installer if you want to.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html
First make sure you have all the needed retail mediafiles. Download all except mv_cell.vp from
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html
And get new build and launcher from
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44291.0.html
-
Thanks,
I really don't mind doing things that way, I just had read that the HOTU version was "stripped down" and I didn't know if I would be able to use it for full functionality.
Also : I saw a link to the .ogg cutscenes. Will those work properly ? I have never played FS2 before and would like the "real experience" with the extra graphics ;7
I'll look at some of the better custom campaigns after that.
Aside from the core vp files, what are your suggestions for others to pick up ?
Lastly, is there a way to donate/paid membership ? I know the definition of 'open source' kinda precludes asking for payment, but I'm not stupid either; bandwidth costs money and I'm sure you guys consume a ton of bandwidth. Is there a paypal account that I can dump 10 bucks in ?
Thanks again,
- Ryan
EDIT:
I am looking at the VP files. I notice that in one of them there seems to be an issue with beam weapons and DXTS. Also, someone has made a fix that converts the alpha maps (?) to DXT1c. Should I install the first mediaVP that contains the problem beams and then install the VP that contains the DXT1c beams in order to overwrite the problem files ?
I was thinking of using the mv_zpack (which has core, music, textures, effects, models) and the adveffects (I am running a 7800GTX, 1 GB Ram, Athlon 3800+)
Would I then add the fixed beam weapons VP ?
-
Glad you like what the guys here have done, it really is breathtaking when you compare the old with the new ;)
And very generous offer on your part, thank you, I'm not sure where you'd go to donate, the person you'd need to talk to is probably either Kalfireth or MatthewPapa
Probably the best place to go to make a donation is Game Warden (HLP and GW are both hosted on the same server) but I'd recommend waiting for someone in the know to confirm that.
http://www.game-warden.com/
Either way, enjoy your stay :D

HotU was designed to give you everything you should need for an FS2_Open install with no fat. HotU got the best version of the game they had the bandwidth for (which is why the cutscenes were removed) and we got a very good way of getting the really important retail files to the user without having to host them ourselves. :D
Also : I saw a link to the .ogg cutscenes. Will those work properly ? I have never played FS2 before and would like the "real experience" with the extra graphics ;7
If you install the latest version of FS2_open (i.e 3.6.9 Official) yes. Otherwise, no. There is no good reason for you to NOT download 3.6.9 unless you have a very old PC so that's what you should do.
-
Thank you,
I am downloading the mv_zpack and the adv effects, should be finished in about 10 minutes.
How do I install the vp's ? create a /mediavps/data/$$$ where $$$ is the name of the pack ? (effects,textures,etc...)
and for the 'sane beamweapons' I understand that it is not adviseable to put the files into /mediavps/data/effects but rather make a seperate directory for them... do I then need to do something special to make sure they load ?
I will do the .ogg's later tonight and hope to be playing by this evening, after work.
Thanks again for the help guys, this is a really interesting project.
-
These guys have done amazing things.
Is there a hosting problem for the installer? Maybe we can solve that, I have been away for a couple months, and I may vanish again, but while my attention is here maybe I can get a couple things done.

If you've got hosting that can handle 4.5+ Terabytes a month easily, tell me.
-
Well, I don;t know about all of it, but maybe something.
-

Not quite. The VPs go directly in the mediavps folder.
and for the 'sane beamweapons' I understand that it is not adviseable to put the files into /mediavps/data/effects but rather make a seperate directory for them... do I then need to do something special to make sure they load ?
Putting them in that folder is only a problem if you forget that they're there when the new set of media VPs comes out.
-
Well, I don;t know about all of it, but maybe something.
If I think of something, I'll let you know.
-
Thanks Karajorma,
I do not have a mediavps folder in my FS2 install directory, so I will create one and add the stuff there,
that will leave me with /freelancer2/mediavps/effects etc...
or should it be /freelancer2/data/mediavps/effects etc... ?
I will add the sane beam weapons to that folder as well and then just make a txt file reminding me that I've added the sane beamweapon stuff. Or I'll just clean out all of the mediavps folder I guess.
Thanks!
EDIT
In looking at the official 3.6.9 release thread, I found the link to the .ogg cutscenes. Firstly, where would they go ? /freespace2/data/$$$ ? where $$$ is something. Also : It says the mydatabus has exceeded it's limit today :( I guess tomorrow then.
-

Should be /FreeSpace2/mediavps/data/effects etc.
Also, you can get the ogg cutscenes in a pack here (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp.old). just put the file into your /FreeSpace2/ directory and rename it to "FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp".

Thanks Turey,
I'm reading this faq on ntlworld atm, it has a list of files that I need to get to 'fix' the HotU version of the game. But I think I already have some of these files. ie: I see little animations in the tech room and I get a voice introduction to my first training mission. Should I worry about going and getting those old files ? How can I check if I have the VP's ? Here is the link to the page I'm reading. Thx.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/hotu.html
I'm off to install me some VP's! ;D
EDIT
I placed the modified and sane beam glow dds files into the /effects folder, not the /adveffects folder. Anyway, I'm gonna make some tea and check this thread for the next 10 minutes, but I think I've got it all set and working atm so the temptation to go play fs2 all night is strong within me.
Thank you SO much to all of you who have helped me thus far, I really appreciate your patience. Should I ever manage to master some C++ skills maybe I can help with some AI or physics things.
EDIT #2
WHOA! I jsut realized that I have all of these .vp files in the root director of /freespace2 not nested into /data/$$$$ I have the tango files etc... so clearly the HotU download has added some of this functionality.
Should I move these files into /freespace2/data/$$$$$ and get them off of the root directory or not ? the /freespace2/data/music etc... directories are empty atm.
I just re-read the ntlworld site, I think the retail .vp's will be fine in the root directory, and since I'm using the launcher it will ignore the retail vp's and use the ones in mediavps anyway. I guess that kinda answers my last question. Thanks again guys, this has been a real journey for me. Off to play me some FS2. I'll be back when I need to figure out how to add a second campaign ;)
-
whoa, I really like how things look after adding those vp's. I can see a major difference, especially when I turn up my AA to 4x. (I want to see some performance levels before I crank it up to 8x and 16x AF)
I do have a problem though:
I am getting some seriously viscious crackling white noise. Is this supposed to happen with the hi-res music vp's or is there another issue. I am running my sound out of a motherboard soundcard (*never* had crackling before now) and a set of THX certified Altec Lansings at 299$... nice speakers.
Thoughts ?
I also cannot get the .ogg cut scenes to play. I can see the "introduction" see in the list, but when I double click it to play I get the little error sound. I have added the ogg scenes to the root fs2 directory and renamed it as given my Turey, but to no avail.

Try selecting "Generic Software" in the launcher.

Are you sure you're running fs2_open_3_6_9.exe?
-
absolutely sure. I *do* get some of the neat features, ie: I see a cool shockwave fly at me when capships blow up (I just fought my first engagement against the shivans).
-
There were two HotU builds. A ~250MB one which was limited and a later ~650MB one which only lacked the cutscenes. The page you're looking at is for the former. The latter basically has everything you need. However I still see people turning up once in a blue moon with the older version so I left the page up for them.
I'll be updating it to make it clear which one it is for soon.

Kara : IRC or ICQ or AIM. Now.
l33t_sh33p : Make sure that the size of the .vp on your comp is the same size as the one on the web.
-
it's 251 MB, which is the download size.
I did get the 600 MB HotU version. Kinda makes sense in retrospect.
I don't know where this "generic software" is in the launcher. Not under features audio.
Anyway, I'm off to bed for the night now. Thanks though, will check back in the morning.
-
I don't know where this "generic software" is in the launcher. Not under features audio.
Audio/Joystick tab.
-
i hope hes using the open launcher and not the retail one.
-
You need OpenAL for sound.
If you can wait for about a day to install, you can get full retail.
http://www.nukelol.com/fs/
Good luck! Don't forget to get all the VPs you can get; the highest quality stuff is cool. Don't forget the latest launcher (5.5a iirc, probably outdated now). Cutscenes in OGG format are a MUST.
-
5.5a is still the newest, as well as 3.6.9. the HEAD buld is only for official devolopers, ect. all .vp files starting with mv_ are recomended if you have good drivers and a fairly new gfx card and system. refer to karajormas faq (link in his sig) for more info.
ps: if you have a crappy gfx card/computer, get .mve cutscenes, since if the previous is true, then .ogg ones wont show.
-
The current Launcher is 5.5b. The "a" version had to be replaced because of some bugs.
-
Hello again,
I *was* using "generic software" which I changed to generic hardware and now the sound is crystal clear and very very pretty.
I also realized that the cutscenes are not what I thougth they were. The little animations within a box and a small dialogue is the cutscene correct ? Not an FMV or a full screen animation or somesuch?
ATM I am using launcher 5.5a, I will do a search for 5.5b. 5.5a is the one that came with the uber windows pack of 3.6.9_open, all the exe's and the launcher.
I've also decided that I really need a good joystick.
Do the missions get any longer ? I am attacking the SD Ravana (which is f#!@ing hard!) and up to this point the missions have been pathetically easy and short. (under 10 minutes, barely a hit on me). I kinda had this image of FS2 being like the old TIE Fighter, the first space sim I ever played and I *loved it*. Deep involved missions, challenging (at least if you turned off all the helpers, like invulnerability), longer game. It kicked booty.
Anyway, off to shower and then kill that shivan warbeast! ( I will check this also)
PS: Which of the 3 bombers do you think I should use ? I've been using the bonagers and I've lost hardcore the last 4 times. I was thinking the medusa because it looks neater than the ursa ;Þ
-

Great. Nice to know... where do I get it? (Until the Installer is back up, that is.)
-
No, there are many full-screen CG animated cutscenes. You can download them from various places on the board in AVI and OGG formats. I believe someone also encapsulated them in a VP container... somewhere. There are two sets... one for FS1 and one for FS2. If you are planning to play the FS1 Conversion... get it. They are great.
-
Ya, they are.

well I have the 250 MB .ogg cutscene pack (in a .vp) file in the root directory of my FS2 folder. I have yet to see a full scree CG anything. I started the game and get little 'pre-briefing' type of things, ie: this big ring is old, not of shivan design, etc... etc... and then I get a little dialogue from the admiral explaining that we will be entering into the ring to see what is beyond and then I get my mission brief. That is all.
Thoughts on how to fix this ? And I also would like to find where the 5.5b launcher is.
and does anyone know what the story with "-smart_shields" is ? It's supposed to optimize shield recharge, but I added the flag in the 'custom flag box' and I get an error of 'unknown flag'.
-

The current Launcher is always available at http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher.rar, but you can get specific versions too just by replacing Launcher.rar with something like Launcher55b.rar, Launcher5.rar, Launcher54.rar, etc.
(NOTE: You might have to right-click and "Save As..." to get the Launcher link. The guys screwed up my proper mime types and symlinks when they changed/upgraded the server and I haven't gotten it all sorted out yet.)
-
Hmm...
http://www.fszmirror.com/files/FS1OGGcutscenepack.vp
...that should work, I think..
EDIT: Put it in your \FreeSpace2\fsport directory.
EDIT2: Thx, Taylor, that worked. :)
-
I still have the original .mve in my directory... should I remove those ?
They are only 100 bytes each. Likely they are just dummy files.
I'm going to delete them and see if that works.
EDIT
whoa, that intro movie is sweet. the problem was that the HotU download (the 600 MB) has 100 byte .mve dummy files, these files prevente the .ogg vp from playing the cutscenes properly. And can someone read my post that is up about 3 or 4 and answer my question? I died trying to kill the Ravana again and it's starting to irk me.
-
And can someone read my post that is up about 3 or 4 and answer my question? I died trying to kill the Ravana again and it's starting to irk me.
What difficulty are you playing on?
-
I got it now, was playing on medium.
I was playing like I was in TIE.
I tried using the ursa and made it the 2nd time. I think the problem was that I was a)trying to get too close, b)ignoring the fighters completely.
I started by using some anti-ship missles to take out the first set of fighters, then aimed at the ravana and dodged a bit then let the cyclones fly at about 400-800 meters. Then I'd turn and burn and take a few hits from the fighters following, I'd shoot them down if possible then make another run at the ravana.
When I finished it off I was down to 18% hull, lolz. The next mission was with the perseus, which I love SO much. I needed to guard a station and I whipped booté rather well.
The hard part is that I am doing this with a mouse and there are a TON of targetting keys and so forth on the keyboard. I will pickup a joystick on monday and maybe up the difficulty to hard.
On a different note, are the medals awarded as the game progresses or do I have to actually earn them ? ie: I jsut got the distinguished flying cross for the enis guarding mission and all I really did was own a couple bombers and their bombs. Not worth a shiny gold medal in my book.
Anyway, night,
- Ryan

I feel the same way. I love the Perseus and it's relatives.

You think a mouse is hard? I fly with this:

Some of them are just for completing the mission, some of them are MUCH harder than just getting through.

"sheep was killed by friendly beam from the rampart"
The most ignoble way to die in the WORLD. On the other hand, while luring them back to my friendly cruiser is a good idea, they can't really be held responsible for the precise aim of a beam that is wider than my ship.
Crap, 3 in the am... need to go to bed.. wait until monday, buy a joystick then play more...
lolz

The game progressively gets harder; we won't spoil all the surprise. However, a few tips... the Ursa is the best bomber in the game. If you want to dogfight you don't even have to fire primaries. Keep you target above the bomber; the turret will take care of the ship in about a minute, especially those that love flying circles around you. One good way to dodge missiles while in a fighter without countermeasures is to drop to half speed. As the missile sensor starts going wild, put the little orange triangle below the center of the hud and hit your burners once you get a visual on the missile (it takes alot of good timing to get this technique down... once you see the missile incoming you have to hit the burners and go above it). It can be done to dodge many missiles of you are lucky, though the easiest way to evade without CMs is to head toward the missiles and then afterburner when theyre very close. It doesn't work well on bombers, though can be attempted as a last-ditch effort. When you fly the Myrmidon (which you won't be flying much more) it is probably best if you put a high-energy weapon (the Prometheus) on the second bank and some low-energy weapon (the Subach HL-7) on the first bank. Don't load Tempest missiles on the second missile bank; they're best on the third bank though the first bank is OK.

So far all the ships I've been using have 2 primary slots, with which I put an HL-7 and a prometheusR. As for missles, I love the hipayload dumbfire (can't remember the name atm). I just let loose with some gun, then drop a few missles from close range.
I will keep that in mind about the Ursa. I was unaware that it had an autofireing turret, that is helpfull as heck.
-
Hm, if the Prom S (Prometheus Standard) becomes available, be sure to use it instead of Prom R (Prometheus Retrofit) The Prom R is only used because GTVA doesn't have resources for Prom S just yet. Prom S fires about 2x faster and has increased damage vs hull and shields
-
There are a few other tips when you choose two of the same weapon, such as in a Herc2 loading up 2 PromS or PromR and making them fire about 40% faster. Here's the lowdown on it...
Your keyboard is probably set so that the . key cycles through primaries. Set on the second gun bank and when you're close, start firing. About half-way between each shot, hit the . key and it switches it to fire the first bank between shots of the second bank. Damage stays the same though you fire much faster. You have to reset this each and every time you stop firing, or it fires both banks at the same time, taking away the advantage of speed.
The Ursa (highly recommended) and the Medusa (mostly hated) both have top-mounted automatic turrets. The Ursa turret is based on the UD-8 Kayser (think of a cross between Subach HL-7, Prometheus S, and a wicked-cool silver shot) while the Medusa's turret is based on the Prometheus R. In short, the Ursa's turret is much better.
Only one warning; the Ursa is the biggest ship in the game. This (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,43465.0.html) topic should help you understand the size differances.
The first picture (from left to right)

Stack 2: Hercules Mk1, Apollo, Perseus, Ulysses
The second picture includes a GTC Fenris cruiser.
-
FS realism just got pwned.
-
More meant to show how ungodly huge each craft is compared to each other. Makes me wonder how I took down all those Ulysses...
Anyways, the Ursa is gigantic; large enough to play basketball on. I'd be more afraid of what could go wrong with such a large bomber then being swarmed. Fortunately, any problems with you ship in FS2 is done by FRED or subsystem damage.
-
don't forget to play the Freespace 1 port and all the other major campaigns (I suggest starting with derelict) after you beat freespace 2. There are literally hundreds of missions out there.
-
and dont forget standalone mods, and making your own mods, ect.
is this what people do on hard-light after a new guy joins now?
-
I've already been thinking of what I would do with my own campaign. I have some ideas about what would make interesting missions. I would want ones that are more in-depth than what I've seen so far. I really miss my old TIE fighter game, damn that game rocked.
I've heard a ton about derelict, well not a ton but I've seen the name more than a few times in the last week. I would be more interested in the FS1 port as an immediate thing after finished FS2. And I really really need to get the descent for windows thing, that was an awesome game. I still have the vertigo missions cd, though I've lost the install disc for DII.
-
my D2 install disk is gone too. man, that was an awesome game. some one should make a descent mod for freespace
-
you know, its glad to see that someone likes our (that word is debatable, since I have contributed only for about 0.00000002 %) work
-
See, I would have people play FSPort b4 FS2, its better that way...
As far as Descent for Windows, link is in my siggy. As far as Derelict, FSPort, and other MODs go, use the installer by Turey in my siggy, but wait till April 1st.
If you are sure that you have your DII install disk around somewheres, bittorrent it... you are the legal owner, right? Just search "Descent II iso" or similar on a Torrent search site. It might take a couple of trys till you find a good torrent, and be sure to virus scan the files before using them. If you don't know of any torrent search sites, google "torrent search engine" .
-
A: Tureys installer doesent have wing commander saga.
b: actualy, i got it from my uncle. no purchase :doubt:
-
Then use the hip63 DVD link in my siggy. ;)

Seeing as you have such an affinity for TIE Fighter, it might brighten your day to know that the Star Wars Conversion is always looking for help. We've recently started the project back up with some fresh blood, and more would always help. All we ask is for someone with an urge to learn and contribute, and you sound like you might fit the tab. Let me know if you're interested. Link to the project's page is in my sig.
