no, this is not acceptable.
and before you brush this off as random forumite spam, ask yourself how oftine have I made a spectacle like this.
I mean some times it's like there are organized plans on how to chase off what few remaining members we have.
-
Well, on the plus side you can minimize every other section of the board above the new 'off topic' bit, reducing your browsology.
EDIT; I checked. You can minimize the 'community projects', 'freespace' and 'hosted projects' part and it'll remember it for the next session. So I'll see if this stupidity with perfectly valid, interesting topics being moved to the 'spam' forum continues before deciding whether to abandon this place for dust.
See;

At first I thought this reorganization crap was an April Fools joke.... and then I remembered that its not yet April 1st.........
Oh and yes, I agree with Bob.
-
Please change it back. This is making it look stupid. Please, please, please, change it back!! I don't care if it took you 10 days with no sleep to re-organize all the topics, change it back. Mneryahgfhghgafghhhh you.
Long live the HLP.
-
I rarely use the main page of the forums anyway. I usually go directly to unread replies (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=unreadreplies) and then I check all unread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=unread) stuff.
So it doesn't make that big a difference for me anyway.
-
Before this gets locked I'm gonna have to say.
I shall lol when all of the "spam and arguments" spill right over into the Community Projects/Games & Gaming/Freespace sections.
-
Well, we'll have some control over that then, as project moderators won't we?
-
Ok, right. There's 2 arguments here. One is legit, the other isn't. The legit one being that the gendisc really neednt be split into so many subforums. The illegit one being that the forums were moved... Moving gendisc to the bottom is irrelevant. Stop complaining for the sake of complaining.
However, the forum being split into three entirely new subforums is a pain for moderation and for people following threads, I agree.
-
You know, with that moderator badge you should be careful how you declare certain points "irrelevant".
-
If you are seriously bothered by the fact that you have to scroll down the page, your argument has little credibility. Sorry.
-
What bugs me at this point is just that posts in the Pub don't count toward your count when we already have a spam forum.
-
Could someone explain to me why does the post count matter so much?
You can still go to someone's stats and see how many messages they have on Pub or other forums that don't count into the post count, if you really are interested in it. If you aren't interested.
In fact I would welcome the disappearance of the post count indicator entirely... on every forum I go to.
-
the fact that it's new location is pissing a great many people off is per'se a point you should be listening too, no one was comlaining about HL being on the top, now half the forum is haveing a spasm because you moved it for no reason, even if we have no rational reason to not like it the fact that we don't like it should be enough for you.
-

I think people are more bothered by the fact that it's an attempt to reorient the forum away from what the majority of users like. Then again, I was just calling you out on putting an official stamp on your own opinion.

No, about 6 people are having this "spasm."

I was doing nothing more than speaking my piece. What is it, now that I have this badge Im no longer entitled to an opinion?
-
You may have to learn that the hard way Taristin.
A word to the wise, as unnecessary as it may seem, always word your thoughts with "in my personal opinion" or whatever when you're saying stuff like this. It gives you something to fall back on when people get upset that they don't agree.
-
What a ridiculous double standard. People (especially here) seem to get upset over the most frivolous of things. Everyone isn't going to be pleased by any changes taking place here, trying to please everyone only makes everyone mad at you.
The three boards need to be remerged into one, but need to stay at the bottom, and post count should be re-enabled. Anyone who still complains after those changes are complaining and arguing for the sake of complaining and arguing and should be ignored.
I had a long thing here, but I dont even feel like wasting my breathe. Ive said my piece over and over again, as has everyone else.
ooooh, IMO, of course.
-
Everyone is just scared of changes. Eventually, they'll grow to accept it, and maybe like it. Until then, we can only hope that the complaint threads do not bog down the place (more so). :p
-
or we will leave. we lose about 10% of the board every time some **** like this happens. and we never get it back.
-
I doubt we "lose" that many, and we're always getting new members. Honestly how often do you even post in the General Discussion that you're making the biggest deal out of this? :wtf: And threatening to leave is an awfully... well... egotistical* threat. Should the forums have been split? Probably not. Should post count have been disabled for the entire section? Not the entire, maybe just the padded cell. Should the section have been moved? Definitely.
*- IMO (as a disclaimer for Kalifireth)

10%? That seems like a gross overstatement.
-
I oftine post in HL, it's probly were 80% of my time is spent. it's the main reason for me to hang out here and I don't like it getting demoted to 'unimportent random crap'
we used to be a comunity of over 5000 we probly aren't more than 300 now.

The members page says about 3000 (an estimate minus the unposters; each full page w/30 people, 127 pages, took out 27 pages of unposters = 3000). I doubt very much that we lose 300 members every time this happens. Anyone isn't committed enough to Freespace to leave this site just because of this triviality shouldn't have been on here in the first place.
EDIT:  unposter...
-
There's only so much to talk about in relation to Freespace you know. :p
-
Thats why we have Hard Light.
Or whatever it's called now...
-
I just dread the lower activity levels in the GenDisc boards. Used to get a good kick out of em.
-
we have 3000 registered users, out of which we probly only have 300 actual active members.

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=mlist;sort=realName;start=0
Last time I checked, 300 is just a bit less than 3800.
-
last time I checked an active user was one of the 3800 registered users who posted regularly. which is about 300 from what I remember the last time statistics were posted about activity.
oh, i mis typed.
-
My point remains valid.
10% is a huge over-estimation.
-
We've never had more than the ~300 regular users......
-
Communities like this die every day... maybe it's Hard Lights turn
-
Never!
-
I think it euthanized itself.
-
No, but certain members are trying to make martyrs of themselves.
-
Derka Derka.

You think that the newbies that come in every day can replace people like Mikhael? Every time the admin staff pull **** they feel like doing, screw what we think, that's when the good people leave. You wanna know why the HL forum was such ****? Because all the good posters walked out, that's why. And of course, when things go wrong, your natural impulse is to place all responsability and blame solely on our shoulders.
-
So the division of one forum into three, and the reshuffling of the order, is enough to cause you to go?
I'm afraid there's one word that springs to mind for that. That word is "touchy".
Nothing has gone wrong here. No big disaster. If you don't like it then you're of course free to say so but to start saying "change it back or everyone good will walk" is nothing short of pathetic. It's a damn forum interface. Were it something like moderation styles or something that actually affected you then I could understand.
-

What happened to him anyway?

Probably true, but then again Taristan's arguement of "who cares if good posters walk, we've always got the newbs" is certainly not helping.
-
I would not class a good percentage of the people threatening to walk out as part of the 'good people'. :wark:
Seriously, how silly and childish is that?
-
Meh, people can do what they like. Of course I'm sure everyone here would rather that the community flourished and that people stuck around - I would! - but if they want to leave for any reason then they can. This is a forum after all and not some mandatory service people have to give up their lives for.
But to start demanding that things be put back to how they were and threatening to walk if they aren't? This is real rattle out of the pram stuff.
-
I think the real issue was how this whole thing came about. It just....happened. Sure there was a thread about it on the internals, but that's just it: Most people do not have access to those forums. IMO, I think there is just a lot of frustration about their inability to participate in such things.
-
the thing that most pissed me off was the fact that this was done without any community feedback, and the "you can **** off if you don't like it, little child" attitude that dominated after, as the polls show at least half the forum does not like this. now apparently there was some discussion on this, but I have yet to see one non-mod/admin who was involved in it.
-
I'll be honest, I was suprised by the change myself. I haven't been keeping up to date and I didn't know it was going to happen.
That said I can say that after it happened I did observe the feedback and it has been a mixed bag. The change was based on good intentions and it was discussed. The feedback recieved however varied from rational to.. well.. childish tantrums. I hate to say it but some people really handled themselves exactly as they have before, with a very "I don't like this, and it's all about what I want that counts!" approach.
Meh. There are polls up. Hopefully everyone will participate in those and we can work through what people really want. The grand majority should have that.
-
Quite frankly, when people can create about 7 threads and well over ten pages of text over this, I don't think community is going anywhere.
Frankly I've seena Prima-Donna side of people here that has disgusted me over the last few days. If people had just let everything sit for a few days it probably would have sorted itself out, but no, it had to be their way and it had to be right now otherwise they would run away......
-
Look, at this point it's the attitude you guys have and not really the actual changes that are pissing us off. You could have simply said "just shut up for a little bit, it'll work" but instead your response was "why the **** should we care about anything you have to say, pathetic man-fools?"

Maybe we got pissed off with Firefighting?
And I directly quote myself...
Personally, it actually makes more work for the moderators, which isn't something I'm happy about in the short term. As I said earlier, having a seperate forum for 'silly stuff' just means we have to read through and decide what goes where. Yes, that's what a Mod is supposed to do, but when things start subdividing to this level, it gets harder and harder to give the appearance of being 'impartial'.
As I said before, I don't want to start having to deal with being accused to being biased because I moved one thread and not another, and those situations have already started, though I've not moved anything personally from the new forums yet.
I'll agree that the debate in here is interesting, and, yes, I've learned a lot of things from here too, it's usually just a very visible few who tend to ruin, but as Taristin pointed out, I can fully understand why the Admin don't want first time visitors to the Forum to see threads like 'Cluster**** to the Whitehouse!' etc as their first point of call.
For my own point of view, I think your thread was moved too early, had it turned into an evolution vs creationism debate then it should have been moved, I'll go on record with that.
That part I agree on... should we make a poll, or would that only serve to make things worse?
I think that would be a bad idea at this moment in time. Admin are in 'Benevolent Dictatorship' mode right now, give it a day or two and let things cool off a little ;)

I never said anything of the sort. Twist my words around all you want, but in the end my comment was in response to Bob's saying that every day the old members leave and nobody replaces them. But if you want to be a disrespectful arse, then so be it.

IIRC, you were made mods to do the firefighting in the first place.
-
I think the Admins should just shut down HLP until everyone stops being idiots.
-
IIRC, you were made mods to do the firefighting in the first place.
And that's precisely what we are doing, despite accusations of not doing our job properly and three people saying they hoped I died, whether in jest or not.....
We're human too, and right now, I'm pretty appalled.
