Trying to get everyone to vote, so we know how people feel, and get constructive advise:
New Hard Light format (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,46128.0.html)
Read the poll for instructions / rules.

This doesnt need to be in every forum :sigh:
-
But then some people will miss it. I don't want that.
-
I don't think your posts are hard to miss.
-
That depends on which boards you frequent. I missed the other poll on this topic... :(
-
Polls don't mean a thing.

Besides revealing the opinion of the people that vote in them. ;)

If you ever take statistics, you'll learn that one of the big no-no's in taking surveys is letting people decide if they want to take the survey. It's called Self-Selection Bias.
-
Ever tried forcing a person to take a survey? I mean, in a free country. The surveys and the results have predictable outcomes in certain types of countries.
How the heck would you not let a person decide if he / she wanted to participate? Under threat of bodily harm? How then?

The US Census comes to mind...

Hmm... how would you implement that in this forum?

You can't. At least, not without MAJORLY pissing people off.
The way Self-Selection Bias works is this. Say you're conducting a survey on people's opinions of abortion (or any conroversial topic). If you just put up a survey and say, "Here, if you want to take it, take it," the only people who will take it are those with a strong opinion on the subject. So you'll get a lot of extreme opinions on both sides, and almost nothing in the middle. Whereas if you actually say, "Alright, we're asking these specific 50 people what they think," you force the moderates you randomly selected to make themselves heard. In this case, you'll have a much more normal distribution, with a lot of opinions in the middle and very few extremes.

I don't care, it doesn't affect me one way or the other. 3 (20%)
I don't like it, but it doesn't upset me. 2 (13.3%)

That's a statistically insignificant sample. Wait till more people vote.
-
nah, I think 5 votes is statistically significant considdering there's like 50 people total posting.
-
I voted 'it's perfect' out of spite of this thread. Congratulations, your plan backfired.

One tends to look at the text under your user name and wonder...

Why are you spamming up all the forums?
