Title: Fs2 Open Alternate Installer
Post by: Photoncody on March 24, 2007, 09:14:27 pm
The name pretty much says it all. It a fs2 open installer, but is not packed in .rar format. It is a .exe and all the information is pretty much in the installer.
http://www.mydatabus.com/4z/lnubb.pbz/cody_madore2001/FS2_OPEN.exe (http://FS Open Installer) (8.19MB)

does it do EVERYTHING that tureys does? oyherwise people might not use it. all you need to beat his installer is a new feuture, a smaller file size (56k users like that), and a cooler GUI. (such is the installer buisiness...)

i will test.

edit: WHAT THE!? it only needs 26 megabytes of hard drive space! freespace open is over a gigabyte!

Alright, I downloaded this. Always nice to know what the competition is.

This only installs the four FSO 3.6.9 exes and the Launcher. It hasn't been spell or grammar checked, and the "This was made with the evaluation version of... " page really makes it look unprofessional.

I really don't see the point of this. It's easier to download and open a rar file if you're just looking for the files this contains. If you're looking for a bit more than just the 5 exe files, go with one of the Online Installers, hip63's DVD, or Shivan's pack 2.0 (when it comes out).

Oh, and:
:welcome:

Oops...  :shaking:  I must have not downloaded it right. I will post a new one when I get the time.

EDIT:This is JUST the installer for FS2 OPEN. It is not for retail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :hopping:

It'd be great if you could get an alternative working, but remember that the full Freespace setup with the SCP stuff is something like 2 Gigabytes in size, that's a pretty weighty upload.

How about I do it in Seperated downloads? Like Fs2 Open in one .exe, retail in another, you know, like that.

That would be kind if hard really, because while the .exe files are different, they both rely on big collections of textures, sounds etc, so Freespace Open, for example, uses the same sounds as Freespace retail. The .exe files themselves are quite small, it's the .vp files that take up a lot of room.

Sure. If you've got 5 Terabytes of bandwidth a month. That's how much my Installer used up this month. FreeSpace is HUGE and fairly popular, which makes it difficult to offer up downloads for it.

I know, but it's only a alternative. I'm going to abandon it, because I have the atention span of a rodent.  ::) any way, I'm changing the topic to "Post your fs2 missions here!"

I couldn't put it all in takaishi. That would take hours days to upload. The retail took two three hours to upload! :wtf:

56k, or even AOLO, i think? i just got blazing fast dual channle whatever internet. upload rate is 100 meg in 5 minutes.what file do you need? mv_textures is over at fszmirror.com/files, along with a whole bunch of junk (which is sorrowfully marked with .old at the time.). i could provide hosting if i had a decent permanent upload.

I think making an installer has become the new cool thing to do. Like modelling was last year. :D

To be honest I think the best thing to do is still to form a group and combine resources to make the best generic installer for all platforms rather than each person building and maintaining their own. Once you do that you have something you can go to the SCP with and say "Can you use this as your official installer"

I think something that looks like Hip's with the cross-platform functionality and ease of update of Turey's would be great.

Even more cool is to do everything yourself without a installer (wich goes slower to, because its downloads all the files from a slow server and doesn't keep the files somewhere for next time use)

Bug reporting with the latest HEAD builds should is the coolest thing to do around here (after solving bugs yourself) ;).

My only problem with that is who's going to pay for the hosting? :P

If I could get it looking that good, I would.

I think karajorma might be right. Although, I a meesly 1 GB bandwidth limit per day so I'm out. But I can't remember the site name and even I did I wouldn't tell you because the word will get out. The site is a upload that has (I think) unlimited bandwidth limit. :D ;) :pimp: just if I could remember it...

That would be nice Takashi. I can email it to you maybe? ;)

i still am in need of a decent hosting site. so far the best ones that already have good resources are:

fszmirror.com/files/
axemspace.com/home/ (the JAD series mod)

and here. zshare wont work because it brings to to a page instead of a direct link.

File front is a good place it bring to a page instead of a direct link, but it has great service and a blazing fast upload and download rate.
ALSO:Fs2_Open is now on a new server with a lot more bandwidth. Fs2_Open (http://files.filefront.com/FS2_OPENexe/;7167429;/fileinfo.html)(8.19MB)
EDIT: It is 56k user friendly.

that means there are small files or a cut down install, correct?

Mostly. It is a .exe. it make a shortcut for the game and installs automaticly in the right directory.
EDIT: I've made another alternative installer (not automatic) but it is in .7z format to unzip it, get 7-Zip here (http://www.7-zip.org/).
