Title: Need an fx artist?
Post by: Einstine909 on March 27, 2007, 09:21:51 pm
i was talking with IPAndrews and he asked if i wanted to help u guys, i said sure (he never replied yet...)

but never mind that, i previously made the shockwave for your emp bomb (is that right?) and the 3rdspace fighter shot...
so i guess that makes me an fx artist... im not so much into texturing

so if u guys need anything, im here to help

edit: (made title clearer)

Since TBP is going final soon, you are a little bit late I think...
Eventually you just feel in the mood to spice up things you just FEEL have to be improved.

How about creating cutscenes with me ? We will put together slideshows... :) for the EACW campaign.

Don't speak too soon. We have a few new ships that I may need help with. His Thirdspace Fighter fireball effect has already been included. Mixed with some work done by MAG.

we could really do with a shimmer effect for warp in and warp out of shadow vessels

Thats one effect that would really benefit tbp shadow ships :)

I could tell what effects I think need improving, but I'm afraid I've hit my whining quota for the month... :nervous:

Just guessing but maybe that's one for a coder rather than a 2D effects artist. And Prophet go ahead. Now is the time to make comments like that.

Now that I think about it I don't have anything to say about the effects... That's one aspect in TBP I'm satisfied about.

Okay. I still think the firespew would look better with completely black smoke, instead of grey... But thats nothing. The current effect is million times better than the original flamethrower.

some of the capital-ship pulse weapon effects (esspecially those form the Hyperion and the Nova) could use some make over...
making them look rather drop- than ball-like; would emphasize that these things do have speed

Those effects are like the show.  In the epsidoes they are balls. :)

They should be balls. Othervise they would still be wussy slow moving blobs with a threat level of vomit, but would just look like drops instead of balls.

I generally fancy balls more than drops. Somehow they look better.

No they're not. In the show the turret blobs are elongated/ellipsoid shaped.

DVD cap for great justice (http://n.ethz.ch/student/ebuerli/download/tbp/DVDcaps/ITB_cap028.jpg). The two blobs on the right were fired from a Hyperion.

True, if you start nitpicking and comparing screencaps. But in general they look more ballsy than droplike in live footage. They are round, instead of having one end thicker than the other.

They are round, dont forget to take into account motion blur :) which we dont currently have on TBP

cough cough :)

@Prophet: True, they're symmetrical, not droplike. And as a matter of fact, the blobs in the 3.4beta are not droplike but elongated ellipsoids.

@mag: The blobs are not round, even when you neglect the motion blur effects. Trust me, I've stared long enough at my DVD caps.

just checked the ones on voice in the wilderness and in the begining.  Yes your right, but they fire very fast and there would be a lot of motion blur applied due to the speed and duration of the plasma bolt.  To me the effect looks fine, its other effects we miss that matter more than revising effects we already have :)

No they're not. In the show the turret blobs are elongated/ellipsoid shaped.

That's what I meant with drop-like; I'm sorry to be short on proper-terms when haveing no time to think over my posts

no way... ball's are good....

I don't what you think but when I see these balls being fired from a pusle turret I alway think: "If it would not be moving across my screen I would this thing would not have any speed at all!"
It is a rule of physics that a moving body (dunno if this goes for energy as well) is de-formed when moving 'cause of the force used to speed it up (and the resistance it encounters when moving; but that's atmosphere only) - so an ellipsoid shape would it be accoriding to the rules of science...

I don't even need any pseudo-scientific explanation.

DVD caps > all theories

I like them as they are in the 3.4 beta.

IPAndrews > everyone else.

Guess I'm a couple posts too late for a "drops > balls" comment.
