Title: Cutscene Problem, won't play on startup
Post by: Auer on March 28, 2007, 04:33:20 am
This is probably a ridiculously nub question, but I have just recently installed the latest FSOpen files along with all the mediavp's, the game runs fairly smoothly (not to mention beautifully). However, I've noticed that the game intro doesn't play on startup anymore, and am wondering if this will be the case for the rest of the cutscene files. I've isntalled them all into the freespace2/data folder.

Not to mention, you guys doing this source code project are simply amazing. I remember playing FS1 as a young kid (joystick and all), and it being my first space sim, and I was hooked ever since. Unfortunately I have never been able to attain an actual copy of Freespace 2, as its such a ***** to get, but I have finally come back to my roots and downloaded the game. Am I ever glad I did (joystick works like a charm!), as this source code project is such an incredible showing of how communities in gaming have the ability to move things forward as much as developers and publishers do. This pretty much tips the balance in inspiring me to go into computer science rather than the medical route I was initially planning. Thumbs up to you all, amazing stuff.

What format are your cutscene movies in? .mve, .avi or .ogg. I believe that the avi cutscenes are not supported by the latest FSOpen (3.6.9 with Launcher 5.5b) however I believe that .ogg and .mve (original format) are supported. Also, where in the data folder did you place the movies. I think that if you just dump them in the data folder they would probably still work, but for neatness they should go into a folder called movies, i.e.

C:/games/freespace2/data/movies

Hope this helps and BTW

The files are in ogg format, but one particular thing is that my comp automatically converted them into "winamp media files", however i don't think this should affect playback in-game. Maybe it does.

Oh I forgot to mention, make sure you are runninig the game in OpenGL and not D3D as it is not supported anymore and I don't think the movies show in D3D.

3.6.9 still supports avi. It is the last official version that will do so however which is why we're getting people to change now.

Nope, no affect. The files weren't altered, they were just associated with winamp, so if you double click on one then windows will use winamp to try and play them.

You'll get more money in Computer Science than in Medical today. HMO's and Malpractice Insurance are really cutting into doctor's salaries. I know what I'm talking about, as all four of my dad's siblings are doctors, and they complain at family reunions. They're not hurting for money, as they were smart and saved up back when doctors were REALLY making money, but they can see what's happening.  :doubt:

Back on topic, when April 1st rolls around, you'll be able to run the Open Installer and it'll make sure you have everything set up right.

rename to FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp and place it with your retail VPs.

hey Turey, I've just realized that I still have the old AVI cutscene VPs.  You don't happen to have a VP of the FSPort OGG movies, do you? =)

Hmmm, when I disabled the FSPort MOD, the FS1 intro movie still played... Any ideas on what I did wrong?

The VP goes into the fsport folder, not the root folder. :P
