a-wing, cockpit, and WIP dude
a few hours later....

progress!
-
pilots seem kinda unnecessary because of this question...
will you ACTUALLY see the pilots in their ships as your dogfighting tons of them?
id just not include it and just paint the windows with a gradient.
-
play fs2 with the new models, then come by and tell me cockpits and pilots are a bad idea.
-
Yeah, I've definitely seen a lot of Herc 2 pilots right before they get blown to smithereens.
-
(http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/1445/tiepilotex8.th.jpg) (http://img139.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tiepilotex8.jpg) (http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/917/rebelpilotuq7.th.jpg) (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rebelpilotuq7.jpg)
These models are about 2400 polys each and they are in 3dsMax format. They could be rigged (currently not weighted) into a sitting cockpit position and exported out.
My opinion is that pilots should only be visible in the most detailed model level... when the ship gets far enough away that the engine begins to use LODs, then the pilots should be turned off. What do you think? How was SWC planning on using pilot models?
-
in exactly that way
those pilots will be good for references, but im currently making my own version that will be much fewer polygons (due to the lack of detail needed from the waist down).
in low LOD's the pilot will be visible, at higher ones, the cockpit will be removed entirely and replaced with the standard shiny black glass.
dont worry though, by the time its that far away, nobody will notice.
-
The ISD is looking really good Brandx0. What modeling program are you using?
Also, Turambar what is the polycount you're shooting for in your pilot models? If you're talking really crude... then maybe you could save time by just using the original XWA pilot models (you can convert them from .OPT to .3ds using the OPT23DS utility. Here's a pic of the XWA pilot model I brought into Max8 (it's about 325 polys):

-
I'm using max 8 myself. No new progress yet, been busy today. I'll post some more shots tomorrow or the day after
-
In any sort of release, it's going to be a big no-no to have original Lucasarts material in the game. So XWA pilots would be a bad idea.
-
(http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/1445/tiepilotex8.th.jpg) (http://img139.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tiepilotex8.jpg) (http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/917/rebelpilotuq7.th.jpg) (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rebelpilotuq7.jpg)
YOU made those? :eek2: That's incredible!
Brandx0, you're doing an excellent job with that ISD. :)
It looks like things are really starting to pick up around here.
-
Cobra... I did not make those pilot models-- they're from Jedi Academy, and I simply imported them into max and re-applied the textures (I'm part of mod project for Jedi Academy too...) and according to Chief's post... it would be Taboo to use them.
-
Why thank you. I haven't had much time in the last couple days to work on it, been moving, but the majority of my source material is from the actual model used in the movies, so I hope to create about the most realistic ISD that star wars games have seen yet.
Thanks for the encouragement, should be more progress in the next couple days.
And yes, this mod is suddenly moving along.
-
(http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/5974/untitled1xj5.jpg)
progress continues. its in the texturing phase now. do not be fooled by the opaque glass, it's temporary
the black area is where i de-mirrored the texture.
-
Nice A-wing... :P
-
the a-wing is in-game
screens when i feel it looks good enough.
-
@Turambar, is it just me, or does the A-Wing look a little too wide? Maybe the image is just stretched... I'll have to look for a comparison.
-
Looks fine to me.
BTW excellent work everybody.

new model, looks better with fewer polies, due to me actually knowing what i'm doing.
-
Huzzah! (I'm in a Ren Fest mood, it's that time of year for me)
edited glaring grammatical error that I hadn't noticed until now
-
(http://i23.tinypic.com/28hilug.jpg)
got some nasty cannons on this biyatch
-
Oh, that's hot man.
-
how much for it? :P

Awesome...simply awesome. I already can see myself inside this A-Wing... :D
-
the placing of the guns trouble me.. (kinda like the gun placements on a zephyr in TBP.. you can miss even when they are at point blank range:P)
who designed it? and how much did they pay him to leave the team afterward?
modwise it's brilliant and it really looks sweet! looks like a challenging fighter to fly.. always making those lateral adjustments to hit anything :D
-
Actually, the guns will at least have a static convergence, and the A-Wing's may have computer-assisted auto-convergence. Other fighters may have user-selectable convergence ranges as well, at least that's what we hope to get.
-
owkay, you just proved I know **** about all the SW tech ;)
I still support it though! :D

Its not something that realy appeared anywhere to my knowledge but the original X-Wing manual that came with its first release talked about something like autoaiming capabilities on the A-Wing. A long the lines of reports by TIE pilots seeing it fireing in odd directions.
-
ooeeh sounds spiffy.. how are they gonna make that happen?
(doing a barrel roll all the time is acceptable for me to ^^ )
-
Yeah I think X-Wing would have gotten that info from one of the novels or the comics, I'm pretty sure there's a reference somewhere for the A-Wing having that ability outside of the games. There's also supposedly a reference to the selectable convergences I believe, so we're not just making this stuff up :)

Yeah, in X-wing: Rogue Squadron, Horn asks what distance their cannons are zeroed at prior to the exercise in the Pig Trough.

UVMapping is almost done, but i stopped to fix some little errors and bubble out the cockpit more
this is final geometry unless there are objections.
-
Looks sexy to me, maybe a bit gratuitous on polies, but sexy none the less.
-
(http://i28.tinypic.com/14dixoy.jpg)
texturing has begun
-
The laser cannons deserve special commendation. The others I will comment as soon as texturing gets done.
-
...Do A-Wings have R2 units? nvm, just checked, they don't. xD

I love how in the first pic, the SWG one, it's typical to see rebel fighters very clean and imperial ones very dark and dirty.
-
Dirty Imps... bad! lol
-
SWG, while a fungame, has seriously gone downhill since NGE... and i wasted all of last summer playing that S***!
-
I seem to recall that in addition to variable focal range, A-wings could also elevate their cannons to fire off-axis. I think Tycho used it in one of the Stackpole X-wing books, among other places. Not knowing the fso engine's limits very well, is that at all feasible? I can only think of a few moments it'd be useful, but when you're buzzing a large emplacement, every bit of wiggle room prolly helps the pilot a bit.
-
I think we've agreed that the A-Wing could have an auto-aim cone, and that would allow auto-converge as well as a small range of up-down movement.

sorry guys, i've been out of it lately.
getting right back in.
-
Lookin good, but the panel lines don't seem to match up with the line art. Otherwise looking great
-
i thought that the laser cannons on the a-wing were swivel mounted, almost to the point of allow it to fire backwards, no real source, herd of it on an empire at war forum (phoenix rising)
but anyway, as far as i'm concerned, all i want to fly is the y-wing
-
The Y-wing? You have a strange choice of preference here.
-
Meh. Give me a TiE-Interceptor.... No wait, give me the Ebon Hawk anyday.
-
Hey, looks nice. :)
-
looks great, but the y-wing is for the SKILED pilots
-
Skiled?
-
yes skiled!
-
Yep. Skiled pilots. Not skilled pilots, mind. Those aces fly DiE fighters. :p
-
well sorry,my keyboard sucks, either that or me typing skills
-
i dont think ill ever see the day when proper grammer is used on the internet
-
One can hope, Snail, one can hope.
-
i try, i try, it's just so hard to do itt

Wow, really? I never knew it was so hard to spend two or three more seconds fiddling with the shift key and adding full stop.
Anyway, enough with the off-topic-ness.
-
well sorry,my keyboard sucks, either that or me typing skills
This gets _really_ funny if you meant 'my' instead of 'me'.
Anyway, this A-wing looks great. I think the restart was worth it.
-
Yes, the a-wing is good looking.
Look at me, ma! proper spellling!

chief, don't make fun of people suffering dyslexia
although it's quite funny ^^
-
I normally won't, but that was an open door. Anyway, I hope to see more updates for this pretty fighter soon.

Giving Brand-X's method a try and i gotta say, i like it.
-
Wood paneling Tura. Wooden paneling. :D
-
Looking good.
-
Jeez this thread is two years old, you ain't done with this yet? :)
Lookin nice Turambar. Really hope to get to blow it up soon, for real this time.
