Title: Bootstrapping (Looking to play or get the code, or report a bug?)
Post by: Inquisitor on March 30, 2007, 07:37:56 am
All this and more can be found on the Wiki!

For now, if you are looking for how to get started actually playing, try here:

Getting Started (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_started)

Updated with Turey's installer information!

Getting the code:
TortoiseSVN setup with pics (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=52845.0)
or, just install Subversion command line and:
svn co svn://svn.icculus.org/fs2open/trunk/fs2_open/

That's a rather old guide. Newbies might be better served getting Turey's installer to do it all for them.

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html

It's a useful page once you've got things working and want to know how the SCP works though.

TheAgent wrote a very good guide (without too many big words) to doing it all manually.  It has screenshots of the file structure and a guide to using Daemon Tools as a bonus.  It is what I referred to when I installed and I have had no problems with my install at all.

Find it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44511.0.html).

Ideal if you are already running retail and are one of those people who likes to have a rough idea of what is being done to your PC.:)

It was done in January, so I can't vouch for the integrity of the links.

If the wiki has an old guide, it should be updated. That is, after all, the point of having the wiki. Is it wrong? It seems to reference both 3.6.9 and the launcher 5.5b, and the history shows updates in Feb 2007 and just recently by jr2. I wouldn't have linked it if it didn't seem to have been recently updated.

If its wrong it should be corrected, and someone should add a link to Turey's installer. There shouldn't be a half dozen places to look for information and it shouldn't require special knowledge of HLP to find it. The SCP site now points there, so that is what people will use. Tureys post is a nice concise bit of information, would seem to make sense to put it on the wiki if that is the best we have.

You should note that I only made a minor edit; I changed the link / name from "Launcher 5.5a" to "Launcher 5.5b" ;)

Can you update the link at the top to point to the Getting Started Guide?

As in the wiki, there are 3 pages dealing with installation methods:\

[http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_Started%28Main%29 Getting Started]

I'm updating this so that it is much clearer. The "Using the Installer" and "Manual Installation" should really be on one page, and the Linux Installation guide should be linked as a separate page since it also has to explain how to pull a copy from cvs [which is quite long].

But if you just point to the getting started guide, then you'll never have to change the link at the top again, despite any changed the wiki pages go though over the next few days.

Cheers!

That seems to be an empty page?

Actually scratch what I said, as I'm looking at the articles more, it may be best to have the current page "Installing fs2 open", Stay in the same format it is now, so that it contains the information about the FSO installer and the Manual installation Guide (I'll change the layout and try to make the instructions as clear as possible.

Because the current layout had a page describing the FSO installer, one that contain your updated guide to the installer and manual installation, and the Linux installation routines.

I'm just trying to eliminate redundancies and make it easy to get the info.

Short answer: retail FS2.

Long answer: if you mean you have the discs, reinstall the game and this time try to find the option that makes it install the hi-res interface art. Or possibly just browse the contents of the discs manually, locate sparky_hi and copy it to your \freespace2\ folder.

Srsly.
