Ahhh....University of North Texas prom.
Guess who is not going and will be at a LAN party instead....wishing he was at the prom with a certain brown-haired girl...
oh well. such is life eh?
and in regards to the lan party, can FS2 be done over a LAN? several people here already have it...

Did you not ask her?

We don't have proms here in Europe, guess I'm not missing much. My girlfriend lived America for 2 years and said it wasn't that awesome. By the way, we're different like that, I lived in America and moved to Belgium, while she lived in Belgium and moved to America, only she moved back. I guess that's why we get along with each other :D

I have less-then-stellar memories of prom. Considering my date self-destructed the morning after and left me a wreck for nearly a year.
-
I think my secondary school kind of had one. I avoided it like the plague, because I was an antisocial bastard back then.
Come to think of it, I'd still avoid it even now.
-
UNT has a prom? Wait, colleges have proms? Huh.
-
Proms aren't too bad if you go with a group. A nice dinner out, get to dress up once in a blue moon, the girls look extra pretty, the guys look extra clean.. doesn't sound so bad.

Not quite true.
There is a tradition in high schools of Finland to have a so called "The dances of the old", when the third year students leave the school to prepare for matriculation examination and the second year high school students become "the eldest" of the school. They usually include old dances but can also include some newer stuff... Would you like to know more? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanhojen_tanssit)
They aren't a prom in the same sense as the prom in US are; they are usually more formal in the scheduled part of the event. The dances are usually performed in the school indoor sports hall (which usually also serves as the place for all other events too) to a crowd of parents, and also to younger students of the school. Also, there's usually heavy partying (read: boozing up in a real Fenno-Ugrian way) in the evening at some other location than the school.
I liked the dancing part in fact... The fact that I happened to have one of the prettiest and nicest girls in the school as my partner might have had an effect in that. But since I've never been into pouring my brains out of my ears, the partying in the evening was kinda boring, with occasional amusement from observing bursts of drunken behaviour.
So no, there ain't "Proms" in Europe, but at least here in Finland we've got something else that serves kinda same function.

Yeah, when I first read that I thought it said 'be' instead of 'have'

In Canada we just call them a "formal". Prom is just too done up and American for us...or at least thats the impression that we get. High School was filled with several formals...I went to two with a date (one good, one bad but neither seemed that way at the time) and a whole bunch more without so I think I've run the gamut of possible scenarios at said parties.
Personally I think its really hyped up and shouldn't be. You get dressed up, you go with or without someone, you do your thing, and you go home...hopefully having had a good time. One of the last ones I went to a few years ago in university (not "prom" style but still a formal nonetheless) was a really great time ultimately because I just needed a huge release after months of work on my thesis.
So...less hype...just have fun. Date or no. Most of the time I had more fun without a date to be very honest...

I don't go to any dances and I never plan to.
-
mine wasn't even held in the same city (no place would let us) and looked like a massacre had happened by nights end (some random non prom goer decided to get into a fight, cut him self and then proceed to bleed everywhere!). I can say for sures that the Markham Hilton will never have a prom again!
on the plus side i did get to dance with 7 women on a very flimsy table (we should have died!) and got photographic proof. and no you can't see it, i don't know where it is anymore, that was over 4 years ago.
so, on the whole prom it self was a decent time, but not the stereotypical most amazing day of your life crap.
-
yeah I had a fun time at my jr prom last year.
I asked the girl out about a week before the event, got my tux, tickets, pass, and corsage all THAT WEEK! And we got a sweet car rental to boot (because ours are a mess). I almost got a limo, but a dang senior kicked us out like the day before (long story). Had a blast.

What kind of college/University has a prom?
Our faculties or departments occaisionally have formal events, but it's a rarity, and it's definitely not a prom.
-
ahh, it's just an opportunity for the likker to flow and for dramatic slashes in costs for harder stuff.
oh lord. last year i lost like $200

If in reference to my post...I was connecting it with formals which is all we have up here which is basically the same thing bit with slightly less expectations. There's usually a dozen formal events at the university I went to. There's one for charity, one for the student government, one from most of the faculties, some larger departments, and occasionally a few more.

Actually, it wasn't in response to you; we have formals like you mentioned at the UofA too =)

Well, we do have smaller dances before prom that are called Formals or Semi-Formals, so we're not all that different. The big one is Prom, though, and it's really the only one that matters (well, senior year Prom at least).

Talking of Dyslexia, was I the only one who read 'Ah...Pron' at first glance? :nervous:

Which, ironically, also relates to the prom... or at least the people choose not to go.

Yeah, I read the title read a few posts and thought I know I'll post
"For those dateless wonders with access to the internet there's always.........' Ahh...Pron ' "
