Hi, I'm from BTRL and I've been having issues launching the game. I've been told to post here, I'll probably get a faster response. I have searched the forums here, but found little help. Rather than reexplain my issue, I'll just quote myself :)
Hi Guys, I'm experiencing a bug that is driving me crazy.
I ran BSG yesterday a couple times, it ran BEAUTIFULLY, SPECTACULARLY.... This morning I start spinning it up and... boom:
Code:
Error: The required OpenGL extension 'ˆïo' is not supported by your current driver version or graphics card. You can either use the Direct3D rendering engine (non-FRED builds only) or update your video card drivers.
File:\C++\Freespace\fs2_open 3.6.9\code\graphics\gropenglextension.cpp
Line: 392
[This filename points to the location of a file on the computer that built this executable]
Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been through several reinstalls (OpenAL as suggested and all of BTRL), couple reboots, vid card drivers reinstall, searching the seas of the internet for solutions.....
OpenGL works, I tested it with CS:S, my vid card settings for GL Extensions is off (tested it with on and then back to off, no diff). Anyone have any suggestions?
Something to note is that I played yesterday with the sound options set to my sound card (Sound Blaster 2 Audigy....) and it ran fine, today the option was there at first, but has since disappeared so I've left it on Generic Software.
One more thing, If I keep hitting OK on the error Dialogs (more errors pop up) but eventually BTRL launches, with an invisible mouse and most of the screen black. I can sorta move the mouse to select options, but again everything is completely corrupted.
Help? Suggestions? Thanks for at least reading

Your extension list is truncated, there is nothing that we can do to get around that. It's either your driver settings that's doing it (though you said you made sure it was off) or your driver install is corrupted. My only suggestion is to make sure that you have the newest available (non-beta) drivers downloaded and ready to install, completely uninstall your current drivers and reboot your computer, then install the new drivers. If it still doesn't work after that then let me know.
-
:-/
Already done that.
I had 93.81 (beta drivers) and it ran fine day one. Next day it didn't run, so after much trouble shooting I decided to get stable drivers. Uninstall 93.81, reboot. Install 93.71, reboot. Ans here I am. Where is this "extension list"? I'd like to take a knife to it.... lol
So done all that. I even created an nvidia profile to force it to set extensions to off, nothing.
Extensions are off, at least that's what my control panel TELLS me.....
-
The extension limit (it's the limit, not "extensions" as a whole) should be off in the drivers. Also make sure that you don't have a profile setup for the game that makes it turn the extension limit on (which is genernally how such a thing would be used anyway).
It's obvious from all of your posts so far that the extension limit is enabled, or the drivers (and/or reg entries for the video settings) are totally corrupt. It's got to be one of the two.
-
That's what I would assume as well, that the limit is on somewhere, but this literally happened overnight. Worked with 93.81, next day didn't work with 93.81, didn't work period with 93.71. Hmmmm
Perhaps I'm stupid and looking in the wrong spots? Perhaps when my vid card says "extension limit" it really is say "burger king rul3z"? I don't know, I need to get my eyes checked I guess. See attached.

When you uninstall & reboot, does Windows auto-install its own drivers, or do you prevent that from happening? I always hit "Cancel" when it asks to connect to the Internet & search for drivers...
-
It does ask to install it's own drivers, but naturally I cancel it and install nVidia's drivers instead.
Thanks for the tip though :)
I'm really sad :(
-
After playing with things a bit, and various google searches, this would appear to be some issue with the last couple of driver versions. What I assume happened is that the beta drivers you installed set a reg setting wrong, it didn't get reset, and the stable drivers are still using it. I'm trying to figure out what to tell you to do, so give me another hour or two and I'll see what I can find out.
EDIT:
(Note, I haven't tried this myself, so these instructions may not be 100% accurate)
Ok, go to www.nhancer.com and download the latest version. Run it, go to the compatibility tab and make sure that "Driver extension limit" is not checked. If it is already not checked then check it, apply the changes, then uncheck it and apply again. See if that helps. If not then enable "Driver extension limit" and put 2048 (or 800, if it requires hex) as the number in the box (if the default number is less than that anyway). See if that helps at all.
-
I only want to mention something:
OpenGL works, I tested it with CS:S
CS:S (Counter-Strike: Source) doesn't run with OpenGL! It runs with D3D.
The "old" Counter-Strike up to 1.6 can run in both D3D and OpenGL. If you want to test OpenGL, do it with "old" Half-Life (1)-Games or (for example) games with Quake-Engines.
And BTW: Since I bought my new 7600GS, OpenGL-Games won't run at all under Windows :(
The ForceWare drivers need SSE for OpenGL 2.0 and my CPU doesn't have SSE-Support (old AMD Athlon Thunderbird) :(
But under Linux OpenGL works just fine :)
-
or (for example) games with Quake-Engines.
http://tremulous.net <-It's good! (96 MB download)
-
Taylor, it didn't help :(
I tried a similar approach yesterday, using RivaTunner. I hate Windows Vista >_< . Because of Vista, nVidia's engineers are spending all their time put drivers updates for Vista, while the XP one stays nearly 1/2 year old :(
I had issues working with nHancer, since it would not let me check or uncheck it from the global profile, not sure why. I had to create a new profile for the fs2 exe and fool around with extensions there (off, launch: nope, on launch: nope, on with 800, launch: nope, on with 2400, launch: nope....)
Suggestions? :'(
Mr. Maniac: O_O
I SWEAR that I remember changing CS:S to OpenGL when I first got it. Have I deceived myself this entire time? I can't believe it! Lol thanks I ....swear.....
Heh the old Thunderbird :) I still use mine as a linux server, sweet machine, never died, never will :) (it survived a power surge that fried the mobo! like charcoaled the mobo! Hells yeah for AMD :) )
-
Just an addition, I'm incredibly frustrated (I usually don't ask for help on boards unless I just can't....figure...it out. I'm stumped cause I've tried everything that SHOULD work) and am read to hack apart the Registry, writing in random values to random keys :)
I've opened up the registry, found the right location, and I can affirm that nHancer is working, cause when I put in a value for extension limit (it is in hex, but the extension limit check box remains grayed and ticked) it is updated in the registry. So the limit is there, and is a fairly large number (hell, how many extensions can fs2 have? the string can't be THAT big.... lol :P )
Also, I may have forgotten to mention that it runs decently under D3D mode. Also, as an alternative, I'm considering slapping OpenGL in the face, and joining the team as lead D3D coder (seeing as you guys don't have one :P). I'm learning DirectX9 atm, and if I see that I have time and it is a feasible job, I'll join :)

FSO doesn't have any extensions, the problem is just what your drivers are reporting.
From the output of "OpenGL Extension Viewer" that you posted to the GW forums it's obvious that FSO isn't even remotely an issue here. It's listing practically no extension support. When the extension viewer gives a sane report then FSO should work fine as well. This is going to affect any and all OpenGL applications you run which use any extensions though, so you might as well fix it now.
The only real suggestion that I have left is to do a driver uninstall again, reboot, and then edit the registry.
Make sure to delete the following keys (they might be gone already, but verify that):
"HKLM\Software\NVIDIA Corporation"
"HKCU\Software\NVIDIA Corporation"
"HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Services\nv"
"HKLM\System\ControlSet002\Services\nv"
And make sure that this file is gone:
C:\Windows\System32\nvapps.xml
Then re-install the drivers and see if that does anything different in the extension viewer.

You have nothing to compare it to though. ;) The D3D code is absolute crap, so if you think it's running well for you then you are just lucky.
But, we certainly aren't going to turn anyone away that wants to take over the D3D coding job. There is already a list of issues which need to be fixed with the current code (PM me if you want info on that). Send us some patches and lets see if we can't get it back up and going again. :)
-
I'm lucky eh? D3D runs but not OpenGL? :D lol
I keep hearing that the D3D code is crap. I'm thinking, would it be better in that case to scrap the code for the most part and start from scratch?
I'm uninstalling and rebooting now. Thank for your help Taylor, hopefully it goes through. I really appreciate your time.

Ok I have a problem: I can't delete HKLM\soft\nvidia. Reason being I have other software in there. see screenie. Do I delete just nForce? It has network stuff there though (I uninstalled the nVidia networking app though a day or two back). If need be I can back up the nvi corp reg dir and send em to you. Otherwise I do not believe I have anything to delete here. The same argument goes for HKCU. Nothing under the control sets to delete, except there is "nv4_min" which I believe is somewhat related to graphics...
There is nv4_disp.dll (it says something about win2K display drivers 93.71 in properties though) and I believe a slew of somewhat related vid card files. There are no xml files whatsoever in my sys32 folder (neither the file you mentioned).
So I've basically only uninstalled and rebooted thus far. Haven't deleted anything (as I don't believe I have to). Awaiting your next post :)

It's more of a time-and-energy issue. The code is crap, and really just needs to be scrapped and started from scratch. But that is a good bit of work and will likely take a couple of months to do. There are various things which simply need to be fixed in the current code and then we could probably go back to having D3D enabled in the builds, assuming that it gets past testers ok. It is multi API though, so it's possible to fix the DX8 code, and then develop and test DX9 code in parallel.

Ok, I think that would be fine. Nothing in there looks like the driver stuff that I know about so it should be safe to leave everything else.

That file in particular probably doesn't need to be there after you've uninstalled. I wouldn't recommend deleting it though, just moving it some place safe for the time being. If you happen to have anything with "ogl" in the name, and starting with "nv", you'll want to move that out of the way as well.
-
installed and rebooted (just a note, I'm using the same exe for the drivers that I downloaded in Dec '06. It extracts stuff to a folder in C:\Nvidia, which I deleted and let it extract stuff from new). The OpenSL Extensions Viewer doesn't seem to spit out much different that what it did before. Should I ourput it here? Or should I try fs2 first?
-
Well... Whatever happens there, it's not good...
OpenGL seems to be broken...
But I don't know exactly where it can break like this...
Could it be the OpenGL32.dll from Windows?
Well... A few questions:
What did you do the day before it stopped working?
And what did you do before you noticed that it wasn't working anymore?
And don't say "nothing" ;)
Did you install/uninstall something? What programs did you run? Did you delete any files? Move any files? Kicking your PC? Did you anger the gods of gaming?
-
thing, no. :D
I honestly can't remember, but I doubt I could have done much (although I obviously did I guess). I stopped playing around 11PM, probably check email and then went straight to bed. Next morning fire up my comp. I was like "Oh boy oh boy!" (Dexter's voice :D) and tried to run Beyond the Red Line. Then..... I might have cried...? :D
it was nearly the last thing i did and the first thing i did on the subsequent night.
Opengl32.dll is in the sys32 folder, looked for last modified date which is earlier today (when I rerereinstalled by vid drivers?) Want to compare size of file? lol Or should I start poking it apart with a debugger? :-/
Again, I haven't launched Fs2 yet. I'm waiting on taylor's go ahead or further instructions.
Kick my PC?! Blasphemy! I can't hurt my baby! Anger the gods of Gaming? I dunno... I considered playing CS:S instead of BTRL..... In the end I DID play CS:S cause BTRL didn't work lol. I've been trying to think all week what I might have changed... I can't..... think..... grrrr :-/
-

opengl32.dll isn't provided by the video drivers, it's part of Windows itself. What is the version/copyright of that DLL? I believe it should be copyright Microsoft, and be version 5.1.2600.2180 for XP sp2.
-
yes exactly right. What I meant is perhaps the vid card drivers accessed it. Oh wait never mind! The last... oh this is interesting. (see attached) oh NEVER MIND LMAO. the created and modified date are "Wednesday, August 04, 2004, 3:56:46 AM". I just noticed it was AM, which would mean this morning, but my computer was off this morning at 3! (I was up but my computer was DEFINATELY off). I didn't notice the 2004 though :D.
Ok so the opengl32.dll hasn't been touched, it's fine. So what now? Do I try fs2? Do I show you the OpenGL Extensions viewer? (it's the same as far as i can tell)?

If the extension viewer doesn't do anything different then FSO certainly isn't going to work either. Something is just completely fubar on your system, but I can't think of anything else for you to try at the moment, other than a complete reinstall.
-
That's what I was afraid of as well, but I'm in no condition for a reinstall. My hard drive is nearly full, and I have lots of stuff I'd have to back up. Hell, I'm prolly gonna have to buy a couple HDs, wipe this one clean and screw WinXp. The only reason I keep it is for Games (better drivers on XP than nvidia's proprietary crap, although it's been a while I guess) and some apps (like photoshop).
No more suggestions? :'(
I'll try running it but I doubt it like you said.

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNope.

What would happend if you removed the error reporting from the code?
if ( k+1 >= ext->num_extensions ) {
mprintf((" Unable to find extension \"%s\".\n", ext->extension_name[k]));
if (ext->required_to_run) {
#ifdef _WIN32
Error( LOCATION, "The required OpenGL extension '%s' is not supported by your current driver version or graphics card. You can either use the Direct3D rendering engine (non-FRED builds only) or update your video card drivers.\n\n", ext->extension_name );
#else
Error( LOCATION, "The required OpenGL extension '%s' is not supported by your current driver version or graphics card.\n", ext->extension_name );
#endif
}
}
}
So remove the if I guess. So it's unable to find the extension or what ever is going wrong, BUT it still continues running....?
-
The extension is "required_to_run" for a reason, you can't use the game without that extension. Extension are features which indicate a particular graphics feature exists. If the extension can't be found the the code can't, and won't, use that feature. Based on your extension viewer output you are missing every single extension needed by the game.
There is nothing wrong with the game code, it's your computer which has the issue, and no amount of code changes is going to fix that.
-
Something that I've neglected to mention is that there have been some anomalies on my computer of recently that I can't account for.
1. I use "switch user" (Windows + L) a lot. Sort of like lock computer functionality. Well all of a sudden my computer started switching user every 1 minute of not being used.so I could be reading some page and boom, switch user. if it was already in the login area the screen would flash for a sec, every one minute. After some Googleing I figured out it had something to do with some screen saver setting. I don't use screen savers. I disabled the option for ring you to the login area and it disappeared. Hmmmm
2. My Taskbar is different. This one doesn't seem significant, but there used to be a line right around the >>. like so: >> |
Why did it disappear? hmmm.
Also some performance quicks. My first thought was virus. I uninstalled my old antiVir and got a newer copy, did a scan... nada. Did some adware scanning... nada.
Lastly, I don't remember when exactly, might have been the morning that I discovered the OpenGL issue, right before... hmm.... I installed this weird 3D screen saver program that my dad has been using for a while. Just to give it a whirl. Turns out it's crap and i got rid of it (the whole thing lasted less than 2 minz on my comp). I've since reinstalled it to see if it had OpenGL options or whatnot, there's like no options or configurations or anything. It's called "Astro Gemini", and I would HIGHLY advise against using it (just in case). Somethings just clicked in my mind and I'm starting to wonder what it did to my computer. Again the timeframe is a bit hazy but that may be it.....
Their site however only talks about DirectX8, so it may be a red hering, but I'm checkin it out.
I feel like an idiot for installing the piece of crap...SCREEN SAVER... program.... lmao.
--------------
Just read your post, you're misunderstanding me. I meant to remover the error REPORTING, see if I can skip over it, but you're right.
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Ok so bottom line is that my extensions have run away? I don't see how a screen saver program could have done that... I'm currently running AdAware (which interestingly enough is CREATING viruses according to my antiVir.... Nod32....). Taylor, please don't take offense, I never meant to hint that the problem was on your end. I acknowledge that my computer went Fubar somewhere, the whole point of this thread is to get someone to help me figure out where and how to fix it.
Is there any way to figure out WHICH extensions are missing? As I said earlier, I don't think I can fully trust what Extensions Viewer is reporting, since it reports up to OpenGL 2.1, which my video card does NOT support. Do you think I should try a forceware 80 driver?
-
Quick update: AdAware found nothing sizable.
I'm really sad, plus it sucks having to wait for you to get on. The wait is unbearable! :P jk I appreciate any time you use to help me, but I'm not sure what else CAN be done shy of tearing my system apart with SoftIce.
-
Is there any way to figure out WHICH extensions are missing?
ALL of them. :) If you look at the extension viewer report it has an "Extensions" section where it will print out a list of all extensions supported by the card/drives, but in your output it doesn't list any. I've attached part of my log for you to compare against (I ran this through Wine in my Linux box, so the versions and stuff might appear a bit off to you). The extension viewer output is correct though, so you can trust what it's telling you regarding what features it thinks your card supports.
I've done more Google searchs and checked NVIDIA forums, but I haven't found a truely valid clue that might help. It might be worth a try to downgrade your driver version even further, just to see if that might help at all. You can try the beta version of your current drivers, which apparently worked pretty damn good for most people. You can find those here: ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/92.91/

Source for FS2?
Anyways, you don't have nv_oal.dll or nvoal.dll (something to that effect) on your system, do you? (Prolly not related, but...) If you do, get rid of it. It conflicts with Open AL.
-
OpenGL issues.. not OpenAL
-
Right, but he has an nVidia chipset, right? ::) He therefore prolly has nv_oal.dll
-
@zank: So you've installed a Screen Saver... Hmm...
Screen Savers are sometimes used to deliver MalWare to PCs, but as far as I can see, Gemini Software is a company, that doesn't do things like that...
Well... I only googled for this Screen Saver and I didn't find anything about MalWare ;)
But IF you would have malware on your PC, an "local" installed Scanner won't help...
Then you would have to boot from a diskette or CD and scan from a clean system... But I don't really know if that's the problem...
But fact is: Something is going wrong on your system...
Did you already try to "repair" windows xp? You should be able to do that (or at least TRY it) when you boot from your Windows XP CD... There, you should be told to press "R" somewhere... And there, you can choose between "automatic" repair and a repair-console...
If nothing else helps, you could try that...
-
Have you ever found the Windows repair to work? Just curious, because it has never produced (good) results with me.
-
92.91 amde no difference.
I've never found Windows Repair to work, in fact I don't think it works that way. Not worth a reboot, cause I'm pretty sure it's meant more for servers and the likes. I'll try to run a live CD or Linux via VMWare. Hopefully it will run, cause if it doesn't it means that my Vid card is fried, which would just destroy me. I've had a terrible weak (not including this gaming stuff). For my vid card to be partially fried.... :'(
Anyways, never tried to install nvidia's drivers on Linux. First time for everything :)

Ok I'm having Hardware issues. I tried loading Knoppix to ram (needs 1 Gig, I have 2), it stopped at around 92%, twice. It goes at about 5.5+ mB/s then all of a sudden slows down to 600 kB/s, keeps slowing down till like 12 kB/s..... (my memory is dying?)
And now I'm hearing my hard drive do grinding noises. 3 times so far in the last 10 minutes. I tihnk my computer is toast. I have no idea W T F happened, but my computer...just heard the HD again.... I think I have 1 hours tops before it dies, that's if I'm lucky. Thanks all for your help, I think I know why I'm hving OGL issues....more noises! >_<

Look up UBCD4Win ; that one's pretty good.

This post brings back some memories. Had a hard drive get a bad sector right where my video drivers were. Talk about a nasty problem to track down. Every time I would remove the drivers and reinstall they would end up right back on the same bad sector. Luckily it happened when the system was relatively new so I didn't have to reinstall much but did have to get a new drive and reload the system.
If the drive is making noises download the test utility from whoever makes the drive and run it. Oh and BACK UP soon.
-
The thing is I have nowhere to backup TO. If I had someplace I would and reinstall Win.
Thanks for UBCD4Win, the problem is that I don't have any blank CDs. No blank DVDs, nada. (Forget about floppies :P). I've got a 200 Gig drive, FULL. :( I tried running scan disk, it quit midway (phase 2) complainging that it couldn't finish lol. Some help.
I'm hunting around for a blank CD in my room, bt I doubt I'll find one. Hell I'm thinking of just getting high on Vodka and suiciding (aka playing CS:S untill the Hard Drive Dies :D ).
I'm afraid to reboot though, because I know what happens when the drive goes bad, once you reboot win can't start and it's twice as hard to back up files. This isn't my first time going through a bad HD.
-
I'm sooo lost I want to shoot my computer....
I downloaded seagate's "SeaTools", and scanned my drive, it says everything is A OK. Yet my driver periodically makes the grindy noise. Unless my Video card learned to speak... I'm confuzled.
-
Are you sure it's the HDD that are noisy? and not a fan(the fan on the graphics chip)?
-
That's what I'm starting to think. but I don't think it's my GPU fan, cause I'm playing CS:S atm, the GPU temp is at like 85C! so I whip out Rivatunner and edit the Fan speed rate to 100%, it get s a little noisy, but nothing like I was hearing before, which I'm no longer hearing...... I think I'm ognna have to open my comp up, but If it really is my HD.... :-/
-
You have 3-5 or more fans: CPU, GPU, possibly chipset fan (like my MSI), PSU (possibly two or three there), and maybe a few extras for the case.
-
I know more about computers than most people know about their thumbs. Strangely the sound has stopped (thankfully), however I recognize the sound. I have plastic fans. There are some sounds that a plastic fan will never be able to make, even spinning at 10,000 RPM.... (they don't). A grindy metal sound is one of them. It was my Hard Drive, I'm sure of it.
FUBAR-BDHR, thanks for your post, it helped out a lot! :) Taking your advice and Kara's advice (to someone else on BTRL) I decided to unistall the game and install it in another directory. FS2 now runs flawlessly again! I guess I had a bad sector as well!
Now I have yet to shut down my computer in like 2 days (since I heard the noise), yesterday night I decided to run OpenGL Extensions Viewer, and GUESS WHAT? most of the errors have disapeared! Instead of saying 0/3 for 2.1, it now says 2/3 for 2.1 extensions..... So only a handful of errors remain. Do you want me to post them?
The Game works, and I'm happy. The only thing that I'm still worried about is my HD. Unless it was playing a late april fool's joke......there's something goind down with it. Neither SMART nor SeaTools see something wrong though...... hmmmm

The only other thing with moving parts is your CD/DVD drives, and your floppy drives... those weren't operating, were they? (Prolly not...)
BTW, I would get a new HD, install it as master, install XP on it, make a new directory called "backup of old HD", then run this from the cmd prompt:
xcopy d: "c:\backup of old HD" /e /h /i /c /k /v
- If you don't want a screenful of filenames, add /q to that list of switches. Alternatively (this would enable you to not shut down your computer), you could get an external USB hard disk (I got a normal 300Gig Hdisk, and an enclosure, for about ~130 total, that was almost a year ago).
Then, after the drivers install for the external hard disk, do the xcopy...
Anyways, what do you think?
