Title: CTD after splash screen (now with debug report)
Post by: Legion on April 02, 2007, 02:49:05 am
Hello all! I just downloaded the newly re-uploaded Turey Installer, and I've run into a serious problem. The game crashes to desktop after briefly displaying the splash screen. I tried editing my registry and playing around with some of the settings, yet neither worked.

EDIT: Here is my debug report & pertinent information from my errorlog:

System Specs:
-CPU: AMD FX-62
-Video Card: 7900 GTX
-RAM: 2 GB's
-Sound Card: X-Fi Fatal1ty

I'm not sure, but I have a feeling the problem may have been caused by an the OGG intro movie. My computer was unable to play any of the FS2 cuttscenes during a previous install.

So you are running 369 builds.. Without mediavps? What resolution are you using? DirectX or OpenGL?

Have you set your processor affinity? I see your running dual core (or like) there!

P.S. In case you haven't already been beamed.........

I was under the impression that I am running 3.69 with the mediavp's, as they're in their own separate folder & selected as a mod in the launcher. I attempted to run the game at 1280x768 and 1280x1024, yet neither worked. I also attempted to run FS2 open with both Direct3D & OpenGL, but switching between the two didn't help the situation either.

For the record, I got FS2 to run decently when I downloaded the HOTU version, and installed the launcher & mediavp's manually. The reason I wanted to reinstall FS2 from Turey's installer was because I was never able to get the OGG videos to play. When I ran FS2 with OpenGL, the graphics were spectacular, but I experienced a lot of anomalies such as black boxes around enemy ship exhaust trails. Furthermore, I could never get Nebula's to show when using OpenGL.

Thanks, it's great to be here! FS2 is my first space combat sim, and I'm looking forward to getting the game running smoothly  ;).

Well I can help you there, but I'm not sure about anything else. Go find the mp patches from the MediaVPs Zeta thread (here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html).

Hey,

This exact same thing is happening to me.  Downloaded the new Turey installer, and it gives me the good old "experienced an error; need to close" box.  OpenAL is updated, no conflicting .dll files are present, and I didn't mess with the audio tab.  Here's what debug gave me:

Crash to desktop to desktop?

So, does your computer melt down or something?
Title: Re: CTD to desktop after splash screen
Post by: killface on April 02, 2007, 06:57:32 pm

No, it just gives that alert box that gives me the chance to report the bug.  Then it goes back to the regular desktop, no major crash or anything.  Just not working.

I'm definitely no expert, but that debug report makes it look like there's something out of whack with several .tbl files.  I tried using VPView on Root_fs2, and nothing happened.  It just went back to the blank VPView window.  Curious...

Okay.  I thought it was a two-stage process.  Like, you first had a regular crash to your virtual desktop, and then your computer melted down to your actual desktop.

Yeah, it's just to the virtual desktop.  At least for me it is, I don't know about Legion.  FYI, I downloaded the Battlestar Galactica mod and that runs just fine, so I'm pretty sure it's not an OpenAL driver issue...but I know so little about these things  :ick:

Forgot to post my errorlog, but it's identical to Legion's.  A common issue...hopefully something outrageously simple  :D

Replace your root_FS2.vp with the one in that pack and see if it fixes your problem killface.

Ahem, I did mention processor affinity on dual core pc's, this may have something to do with the problem?

Worked like a charm, karajorma!  I'm up and running.

EDIT: Hmmm, may have spoken too soon...the game DOES launch, but it's just default FS2.  Turning the SCP options on and off in the launcher has no effect on the game, and the SCP splash screen doesn't come up at all.  Confusion...
Title: Re: CTD after splash screen (now with debug report)
Post by: killface on April 03, 2007, 01:50:59 pm

Ah.  So the installer put all the SCP .vp files in a subfolder called "mediavps".  Moving these to the main FS2 folder with the original .vps restored the game fully to SCP.  Legion, this will probably work for you as well, once you download the Root_fs2 file from above.

Post by: DukeOfNukes on April 03, 2007, 03:16:36 pm
I did all that...got it running as Freespace2 with the root_fs2.vp. SCP Splash screen still comes up, but there's no difference from normal Freespace 2 otherwise.

I tried moving the .vps into the main folder, and it did nothing. Is something immediately visible that tells me if SCP is working?

So the splash screen comes up but there's no actual in-GAME difference in graphics?  By in-game I mean the actual missions, not the menu screens (which I believe are exactly the same as in FS2 retail).

Have you gone into the "Features" tab on the launcher, and actually turned on the SCP features?  I apologize if that sounds like a lame suggestion, it's really the only thing I can think of off the top of my head and I don't know how familiar you are with the launcher.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I got FS2 working without resorting to that.

Karajorma: I got both retail & SCP up and running after using the root_FS2.vp you posted--without having to swap around the mediavps's. Thanks for all your help!!

The only task I have left is to try to find the original custom hud configurations to change from the default Green/Blue/Amber color scheme. My old hud was semi-tranparent gray at one point, and I'd like to revert it back to that. However, the options menu no longer features any of the custom hud's (I believe there were around 4 or 5 in the HOTU version). I appreciate any suggestions.

Killface... SCP mediavps were put on purpose to 'mediavps' directory. In this way you can select to use these mediavps by using the 'Mod' selection button in the launcher. Basically you should leave the mediavp files to the mediavps directory and then run 'mediavps' mod.

The only task I have left is to try to find the original custom hud configurations to change from solid Blue/Green/Amber. My old hud was semi-tranparent gray at one point, and I'd like to revert it back to that. However, the options menu no longer features any of the custom hud's (I believe there were around 4 or 5 in the HOTU version). I appreciate any suggestions.

Alright, to follow up on my last question, I found that hud configurations are saved in C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data\players when modified. For one reason or another, I can't get the default gray hud to come back after using the installer. If someone could save their default templates (one is gray with bars that turn red when accelerating... another is gray/yellow/military green) and post them here, that would be awesome!!!

Here's what I mean:

Since you're the 3rd person to be able to fix the problem using my VP it sounds like the version being used by Turey's installer is corrupt.

It was a typo, which Turey said (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,46350.msg945356.html#msg945356) he has now fixed - he accidentally told the Installer to get "Root_fs2.vp" instead of "root_fs2.vp".  Nuts to the case-sensitive issue... ::)
EDIT: added link to thread.
