I'm sure this is relatively simple, and I'm gonna feel like an idiot for asking this, but Freespace 2 crashes on start up. I see a screen flash (presumably a load up screen) for a second or so, and then everything goes blank for a few seconds before the "freespace has encountered an error" window shows up.
I have the 20th anniversary edition of FS2, and I installed using Turey's guide at http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html
I also submitted a bug report...but I doubt that was necissary, just hoping to get an answer back

Firstly:
:welcome:
What are your system specs? Did you install OpenAL? What is your command line? How have you got the launcher set up? Have you tried running the Debug exe and if so can you post the log here for folks to see?
-
Debug does the same thing as the start up...just without the load screen.
Error Log:
fs2_open_3_6_9 caused Unknown exception type in module ntdll.dll at 001b:7c94eb28.
On the launcher, everything is defaults except:
connection changed to LAN/Direct Connection
connection speed changed to cable
resolution to 1024x768
colordepth changed to 32-bit
Athlon XP 3200+ (2.21 GHz)
1 GB of RAM
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro
Windows XP Home
OpenAL is installed

Run the debug again and post the fs.log from your folder here, more specifically the last few lines (5 or 10 i think?) You are running the game through OpenGL on your video settings aren't you? Also on the top of the features tab is your command line, cut and paste that here so we can have a clearer picture of what is happening.

C:\games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe -mod mediavps
I've also tried doing it without the mod on...but there was no difference...I figured since the mod was default I'd leave it that way for now.
The debugger doesn't run. It crashes exactly the same as the actual program, so there is no fs.log
as for the video, I've tried with both OpenGL and Direct3D8...the only difference is that in Direct3D8, before crashing, instead of my whole screen going black, only a 1024x 768 part of my 1280x1024 desktop goes black
-
If you get startup screen you ought to get the log file too..
Check from your data directory for a fs2_open.log named file.
-
ah ok...found it

We went through this yesterday...here's the thread:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,46313.0.html
Basically, karajorma recommended I download this file and replace root_fs2:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/Downloads/HotUv1.20Pack.rar
And it worked perfectly. Back in the game!
-
Back in the game!
Oh No!!! It's Alan Partridge!!!!!
"Back of the Net!"
-
I was thinking more of those annoying "Just for Men" ads...Get back in the game!!!
Oh, and DukeOfNukes, the fix I pointed you to above got default FS2 to work for me, but nothing more. We're hashing this all out in the other thread.

Hmm, the root vps are different for different versions of FS2? Interesting.
-
I think it was more that the root vp I got from the installer was corrupt or null...the installer generated a file, but it was 0 bytes in size.

This is now fixed (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,46350.msg945356.html#msg945356).

Thanks for everything, Turey. Your installer is the shiznit, one little (crippling) typo or not

Thanks. Always nice to get a complement after I fix a stupid screw-up. Keeps me from feeling so bad about making the screw-up in the first place. :)
