Title: Another Excalibur Render
Post by: Thorn on January 26, 2002, 07:09:00 pm
Well, thanks to Warlock, you'll be subject to a bunch of Excalibur renders over the next few days. I'm still working on how to get the thing to work properly. It has some wierd lighting bugs.
The first of many more to come:

Oh I see now. It's turning at a 40 degree angle away from camera.... or 90 degrees towards.

Got a few more meshes to play with  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Once I get my Athlon install, I'll be able to do something with them, cause the sheer number of polys is killing my comp  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/squeeze.gif)
blah...

Compare to the Event Horizon, all ships blow chunks.

And about the polys, I tried to load the low-poly release of a jump-gate and the things damn near caused my computer to hang itself. I probably shouldn't have winamp running when I'm 3d'ing.

The Event Horizon makes me want to blow chunks. Actually, now that I think of it, that whole movie made me want to blow chunks.

Thorn, good job. Those look pretty damn good.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

use an opacity map to feather the edges of that jumpgate, and you're in business.

DO you know where I can get Babylon 5 meshes in 3D Studio Max R4 format?

If you use 3dsmax, just use a gradient map on the "Shine Strength" channel.  Have the noise texture you used on the middle channel of the gradient map and have the other two channels pitch black.  Then tweak the location of channel 2 and you're done.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Meh, Lightwave...
I can tolerate it for now, I wanna figure out how to do fancier stuff first, then I'll worry about it..
Besides, you hardly notice it when its rendered at low res/no AA.
Like this ("http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/tap/renders/starfury-jump.avi").   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
