Title: The Plan™ (AKA: Our Future)
Post by: Fineus on April 03, 2007, 09:04:30 am
Hello all.

Recently there have been some behind the scenes discussion regarding the direction of HLP, how to identify that direction and how to provide the best possible service around here.

Some changes have been made.

To you people, this won't mean anything... yet. Some preparation has yet to be completed.

However this post is not entirely without meaning. We're looking to focus and improve HLP. In time, we'll be looking for your input. Whether you're a modder, a campaign creator, a fan of FreeSpace or just John Doe - here for the community... we'll be wanting to hear what you want from this place. In the mean time, please rest assured that stagnation is not on the agenda.

The first change has already been made. We've identified that one of our chief problems was that of talking too much and not acting. This has bought about a change in the way HLP is operated. From here on out, through agreement from the administration, I'll be taking up the reigns as Operations Manager or HLP.

In the scheme of things, this pretty much makes me the equivalent of a Prime Minister. I'll be making sure the staff know what they should be doing, that if they're busy we can put plans in place to cope with that whilst continuing to improve... that sort of thing. Most importantly I want to stress that this does not make HLP a dictatorship. The input of everyone involved is still very much a part of the decision making process. In the simplest terms - I'll be there to prod things along and keep us on the right foot.

If anyone has any need to contact me, please don't hesitate to do so. I'd prefer use of the PM function as I'm most likely to check those first, but I can also be contacted using ICQ "57179504" if necessary.

Thanks :)

I'm not trying to make a dig here but the whole statement sounds hypocritical. You don't actually mention anything about what you're going to do or how this affects anyone whatsoever: it's fluff and devoid of content.

That's because I don't want to start making promises and have everyone expect the planned changes to happen overnight.

What I'm doing right now is working out what admins are available and what skills they can bring forward. Once that's done we're going to start looking at what needs work.

I'm deliberately not being more specific than that because people will start wanting to discuss even these first steps and we won't get anywhere. For now, simply settle back and let me get on with what I'm getting on with :)

What on earth makes you think that?

Not that Kara isn't capable of being an admin, but right now that's not even being discussed so I'm not sure where you're coming up with the idea.

thesizzler, right now we're not looking at any specific changes. A plan (yes, Plan™) has been created detailing a step by step process towards improving the site - a number of those steps are "grey areas" with improvements and changes as yet unidentified. As I've said, right now my concern is to perform a roll call of active staff and take things from there.

So you are going to see what major members are still active in the community and see what you can do from there?

That doesn't sound like much...

Works better than relying on the members who aren't active anymore in the community. :p

I didn't say "major members", I said "staff".

But I'm intrigued now. Several people have said "that doesn't sound like much" so I'm going to go ahead and ask you a question.

What were you expecting? :)

And please don't answer with "I dunno... just... more". That's a waste of time. It sounds like you guys thought I was going to announce something epic and who knows, maybe we could work towards that. But you'll have to be a bit more forthcoming with what you were expecting.

Hey, wait a sec... whaddya think you're doing, Kal?!? You can't just take over like this! We need to discuss it among the administration endlessly, finally arriving at a point where there's no change in sight, and then forget about the whole thing! You can't just go ahead and... and... take action!!

I sure hope all y'all's sarcasm detectors are working properly...

If you're gonna be PM, you need to learn to talk like one:

Quote
We're looking to focus and improve HLP. In time, we'll be looking for your input. Whether you're a modder, a campaign creator, a fan of FreeSpace or just John Doe - here for the community... we'll be wanting to hear what you want from this place.
What kind of PM-talk is that? It's nonsense! Here's the proper format:

Quote
Your opinions, our future. A new beginning. Improvements - Modders, campaign creators, Freespace fans - All for the community... you will be heard.
See, that's not so hard, right? :)

The title "the plan (aka: our future)" implies some kind of major change. (saying that you have a plan usually  means more than seeing who's still here.)
Title: Re: The Plan™ (AKA: Our Future)
Post by: Fineus on April 04, 2007, 01:45:50 pm
It does involve more than seeing who's here, but as I've said earlier in this thread - I'm not going to start divulging this stuff because it'll inevitably lead to more questions and slow everything down that much more.

The best way to think of it is this: What I'm doing now is a work in progress. It is not finished and it has not all been revealed. And I won't be revealing more until I'm ready to.

Till then, you'll have to cope :)

Karajorma will be an Admin.

I don't think he'd want to be one. He's got too many projects as it is, and many of them are getting neglected for the time being (MG, etc.). I don't think he needs more on his plate.

Well he is active and always ready to help people. Many members have projects to work on, and many projects suffer a terrible lack of personnel.

But Inferno, for example, is back. There are so many active members....
We don't know if projects like MG will remain in the darkness forever. Just look at SWC, for example.

Could it be that the number of topics shown on each page has been reduced? I prefer the long list for our project so that I can see all the new post at once without changeing pages and search for them.

Can the number of topic one can see be changed back. I prefere scrolling the pages over flipping them ^_^

Just a FYI. I noticed our "Most Online Today" stats have been steadily way over 100 (closing to 150 actually) every day since BtRL release, so I've toned down how many topics and posts are displayed per page back to their SMF defaults. This will significantly shorten time required to execute the sql queries to show one page of topics or posts. One query alone won't make much difference, but when there can be potentially a hundred queries executed about same time, it does make a difference.

Our previous values especially for topics per page was a bit of overkill anyway. While most forums have it somewhere 15-30, ours was 50. Posts per page was more reasonable at 25, but still quite high compared to most. If people aren't happy with default values, we can increase these values bit at a time until majority are happy but without going overboard.

here is some ideas for the site. :)

1.   a desktop AIM/ICQ/MSN mesanger for HLP use only.

2.   a world map showing members locations if they chose to display it. (could be intresting seeing how far HLP has reached)

edit*
Make the RSS feads more readable. (incorporate them into the messanger (HLPM):))

1)  There is an official IRC chat room that we encourage the forum members to use.

2)  Go to the main forum page, and scroll down to forum stats.

I suppose someone could write a bot for the IRC room that updates the topic with the RSS feeds.  I might even try taking a stab at it when I get around to messing with making an IRC bot if no one else has.

I tried suggesting the store, but there's already a store someone runs, that apparently does not fund HLP.  So getting one to fund HLP would probably just have to be something someone sets up and then just donates any profit to HLP themselves.

I'm sure that my input on this matter won't be of my meaning or consequence, given my tainted history, but I believe that HLP has full ownership of Freespace 1 and 2. It was a fantastic game that had few flaws in it, but just didnt sell well, and now it belongs to this community. Perhaps not in legal pen and paper, but for intents and purposes, HLP community own Freespace 1 and 2.

Look at DoD: Source. It was a fan based game, and Valve asked for ownership and bought it , now they sell it, and it sells well.

I believe HLP could pool all the great modders, voice talents, mission designers and producers together and create "That which shall not be named.". Or just put it before a large gaming company and ask them if they'd consider helping for marketing it.

Anyway, thats my two cents.

Unfortunately it has been discussed before - some people have even given it a valiant effort when it comes to getting such a project off the ground!

However whilst these things always start in a blaze of enthusiasm, more often than not we find 85% of the people on board suddenly find they can't dedicate all their time to the project and have to drop out.. you're left with a core amount of people who would still love to do it, but it's simply too much for them to do on their own. In some communities they've gone on and made a great effort and even made some releases but I think a lot of these things just die out due to lack of activity.

It's a good idea. But seeing its fruition as an unfunded complete sequel to FS2 is very unlikely.
Title: Re: The Plan™ (AKA: Our Future)
Post by: Black Wolf on July 03, 2007, 06:45:55 am
It goes beyond very unlikely, for a million reasons. FFS, how many times do we need to tell people to stop suggesting this?

Who would run it? Who would make the storyline decisions? You want to put it to a vote every time a storyline decision has to be made? Then everyonne would know the storyline, and so who would bother playing it? What about all the other projects people are working on? Most, if not all, of the best talent on the forum is already committed to other projects.

And then putting it to a game company... even worse. The SCP is strictly non commercial, as enforced by the initial source code release stipulations. Which means the only people who could sell it would be [V]. But then they'd need to compensate everyone who worked on it, including people like lightspeed, who've since disappeared, or people from the early days of the SCP who inserted some of the new sexps and features, and anyone who put anything into the media vps. How would  you find all these people? How would you decide what to pay each person? Some will want more, some will want less.

It's an impossible idea. Make a campaign if you want. Make whatever you think FS3 should be. Get the best people you can get to help you with it. It can be your own, personal FS3. Just like TI is mine, BWO is Icefire's, MT is Styxx's, Lost Souls is Aldo's and so on and so on. But that's as good as it's going to get, unless you want to consider the SCP engine a sort of spiritual successor to FS2 in baseware terms. There will never be a universally accepted community made FS3. Ever.

You're obviously aware that FS3 is considered a topic we don't like to discuss. This is why. Because it's been brought up so many times, by so many people people that it gets annoying repeating these same basic problems over and over again. Now please. Enough. OK?

Suggestions are welcome, but that's the only suggestion that's mentioned as bad in almost every Welcome beam speech.  I trust you read it word for word, right?  :)

Ah, but the Welcome Speech TM is considered harmful.  Goob said so.  Then again, Goob hates us all!  :shaking:

, including people like lightspeed, who've since disappeared,

Just a thought... has anyone tried PMming him?  IIRC the default setting for PMs is to have a notice e-mailed to you.. so? Anyone?

Don't crack jokes where Goob can see them. He may ban you.

(this isn't a joke, he banned Charismatic for that)

Yes... I saw Charis' "joke"... if you call jokingly threating the funding for HLPBB a joke.   Yes, I thought that was a bit harsh.   But really, how else could you get the message across?  That's serious crap, dude.  And we already had the Google ads disabled once.

Maybe you should put a leash on him, or take away his admin privilages. I believe (and im sure many others do) that he is misusing them. He seems a little out of control IMO.

Goobers rocks.

pretty sad that he really......doesnt.  :blah:

If Goob disappeared this place would become uncontrollably stupid. Not that it isn't already.

At the moment this place is stupid, but not uncontrollably!  :D

OK, How about this:  I propose that after our Installers are updated to use 3.6.10 (when it comes out, obviously), that we re-create the torrent tracker.

I have a legitimate question!

When did :beamz: and :warp: get added? Is this part of our plan to take over the world? If so, then it's not working.

Wutz wrong with them? They're more FreeSpaceyish which is good. That's what HLP's for. FS.

I rather like :beamz:

It reminds me of the welcome beam. Something sadly lacking these days  :(

The welcome beam itself isn't banned, but the crap that comes after it.

Yes, but I have seen less welcome beams lately. A lot of helpful advice and welcoming conversation, but no  welcoming beams! Just an observation!  :nervous:

Last Friday.

Did you want me to answer the illegitimate question too?

That's okay :nervous:.

Did any other ones get added?

@Wobble##: Some people just don't seem to have the judgment of when to and when not to use it. They then don't use it at all, which, depending on how you look at it, is pretty wise.
