Title: WIP - Corellian Gunship
Post by: Black Wolf on April 06, 2007, 02:00:55 pm
This is my current progress on the ]Corellian Gunship (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Corellian_gunship). I know this ship pretty well - I've built it from the ground up in steadily increasing polycounts. This one is currently at 1656 polies - I'm arbitrarily assigning a target poly count of around 10 000 all told - 4000 in the main body, 3000 in greebles and 3000 for the turrets, but I'm not set in stone on that (Especially the turrets, as all but four of the 18 it's supposed to have are multipart).  There's a problem though - this thing has some very prominent side mounted multipart turrets which I'm really hoping not to have to get rid of - they're pretty prominent featgures of the ship - does anyone (preferably a coder) know if these are possible yet, or if they're at least on the horizon?

I've heard that Bobboau has written some turret code that should make some amazing things possible with the turrets.  I'm sure it will be in common builds by the time we need it.  Someone else might even know where a test build is if it's not already in the HEAD builds.

Oh yeah, and it's looking good.  Feel free to use higher res renders though, if you get some bigger ones I can make a section for it on the website and under the screenshots section for them.

Looking good.  Get us some high res renders to put up!  Also, check this tutorial out, it's a great way to present WIP renders:

Check out the WIP shot in my siggy to see what it looks like.

I'm also curious what you're using for source materials.  Besides that wiki photo, which is fairly small, I can't find a whole lot.  Most of the ones I found are from one game or another, and since we're going for higher quality than most of those, I'd recommend taking detailing cues from the CR90, since there's much higher quality sources, such as this image:  CR90 Corvette (http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/b/b0/Corvette-CHRON.jpg).  Using cues from the CR90 would help reinforce that it was built by the same company and give ideas for the finer detail.

Go ahead and put your own spin on it, since it's not a movie canon ship, it can afford to look a little different from the previous games' models.

Well now you have to get a better render in here cause Sandwich just flooded your WIP thread with his giant ego, er, render. :P

Actually, IIRC it was Ryx (I think...) who rendered that. But anyway... Corellian Gunships FTW! :D

Just to give you a heads up... side mounted multipart - turrets (turrets at any angle) is currently not working.   Saga is also currently stuck with that problem, and I've got a few models I can't release because of it.

Not currently working in what version?  I thought Bobboau had some code that would make the turrets far more flexible.

Whatever code it was made problems, so I guess they removed it, IIRC

Cheers for the rendering tips - the result is below. Currently at 2709 polies - The rear is a separate object and will probably gain a few hundred polies worth of detail before I move onto the engine nozzles - at present it's well below the level of the main body (though to be fair I don't think there's an awful lot on there that wouldn't be better handled by textures). I've gone for the solid block engines, which seem to be more commonly portrayed, though last time I was building it I had some art that showed exposed engines. I might do a variant in this style, because it really is rather cool.

The art I'm using this time is a combination of the one on the wiki page (actually a slightly higher res version of it) and some blueprints (I can't hotlink, so look Here (http://krantas.mvhosted.com/databank/capital/CorellianGunship.htm). The website is in japanese (I think) but it's the first link on the page, just above the Ralph Macquarie painting). I'm 99% sure these were made by WEG, and, crucially, there are some pretty prominent differences between these and the wiki picture. Since the wiki picture was, at one point, used on the official SW Website that's the one I'm treating as canon (Presently the website has a shot from a compuer game, I think Empire at War, but it's fairly low poly, so I'm ignoring it for the moment). I've made a few minor deviations for various reasons, some of which will be eliminated before I'm finished.

That's looking like a really nice model, looks like you're making some fast progress.  I only hope we can find some solution to the turrets so it can be fully functional in game.

Very good, BW. Thumbs up

But let me ask a question: Will there be anyone to texture it? Remember why so many of our models end up only with a mesh.

About the turrets, I'd go ahead and add them for now, but make them static for the moment.  It looks like taylor eventually plans on getting the turret code back in the engine, so side mounted turrets might be possible as early as sometime this summer.

Sounds good. But even if it turns out to be impossible or excessively complicated to code, we could still use side-mounted turrets like those of the GTCv Deimos. (Just thinking aloud)

I'll be texturing it myself. Thanks BTW :D

By the way, the image that we have over there at Wookieepedia is from Star Wars: Rebellion, and that's the only canonical image for the gunship. If there were another one, it would be in the article already, I suppose.

[EDIT]Couple of questions:
*What's left to model on this? I can see that it needs turrets, but even as I imagine turrets added to it, I still feel something is missing.
*LODs?
*Textures' progress? (I'm particularly interested in this)

:necro:

Side mounted multi part code is supposedly re-committed, so now there's nothing keeping this model from being finished.  Other than BW possibly having dropped off the face of the earth.

His last post was on January 31. Still, his chances of being alive is very high. :D

Woah. I was reading the whole thread and thinking, "This all seems very familiar, but it's new because it's dated April 7th."
2007. dur.

Anyway, hope we can see this thing in action.
