I was hoping it wouldn't come to this but I've looked everywhere and found nothing.
I need the official Volition node map, no variant will do - it has to be canon.
If anyone knows where I can go to find this elusive of graphics - I'd be most greatful.

Er, I'm not 100% sure, but I think I'm using the (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) map on my site...

Unfortunately I don't know where this comes from.....someone can correct me anyway, I'cve been assuming it's canon (not that it matters to my campaign)

There are several maps here made for player-made campaigns. Look on the third post here by Eishtmo for the canon map.

Since the rest are player-made, disregard them.
Hope this helps.

Cheers - a question about the Volition made one... the nodes in the upper right are red - why? is that Shivan owned space?
-
No, it's just the way things are (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Just another one of those mysteries Volition likes to leave us with... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Maybe they were frontier systems at the time or something, but then the systems in the lower left (such as Dubhe and Alphard) should also be red, so I don't know really...
Oh BTW it seems that they made a few changes from FS1 to FS2:
The Mirfak system in the upper right corner was renamed to Mirfax. (although it may have originally been this way)
Procyon A was renamed to Procyon.
And of course, the unlabeled systems were changed to Epsilon Pegasi and Gamma Draconis. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
Also, regarding the Luyten system, I actually found that star on a table in an astrophysics textbook, and it is apparently Luyten 726-8A rather than 726-BA.

Yea I personally think the red systems are where shivan vs. GTVA battles were taking place.

Only during FS1 could that have occurred. In FS2, the Shivans never made it past Capella from Gamma Draconis. (No WAY were the Shivans in Epsilon Pegasi and Polaris in FS2! That's where the GTVA and the NTF were fighting through most of FS2.)
I think it's just another one of those errors that (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) forgot to clean up...
And CP5670 is correct about the Luyten system being spelled "Luyten 726-8A" rather than "Luyten 726-BA." I saw this somewhere also.

That node map is from FS1. FS2 uses those nifty 3D animated briefing maps.
In FS1, those systems in red were systems in which Shivans had control or something - they were essentially behind enemy lines.

maybe those systems r red cos we cant reach em anymore - cos capella's gone kaboom. this is not the original map - there was an earlier one in which those systems were not coloured red but were grenn like all the others - this map was available at the official freespace site - they later put up the map with the systems coloured red.

It's Mirfak. Mirfak is a real system. Mirfax is not.

Many of the systems are still accessible through Regulus though; Capella and GD are the only one that are cut off from GTVA space.

I guess Volition must have messed up in that case. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) Several of the command briefings quite clearly show it as "Mirfax."
-
He's right, it is 'Mirfax' in the briefing animations. Though there is no true star called Mirfax. There is however a 'Mirfak' star, but it's a really long distance away from most of the main systems used in FS1/2 which is why it might have been renamed in the game.

Sorry to the admins. I've only just realised how old this thread is. Blame aldo for sending me on a wild goose chase in search of sandwich's supposed 3d node map. ;)

EDIT:
I see someone's already posted it.
-
I was wondering why all the smilies were broken...
-
yeah, ... so why are they broken?
-
Because this thread is so old that the names/folders have been moved around. Speaking of age - this is past its sell by date.
