Title: Possible to Edit Music Files?
Post by: gman19 on April 14, 2007, 02:46:07 pm
I found some kick-ass stuff today to replace the default FS2 music, if possible. "Klendathu Drop" and a couple Zoe Poledouris songs from Starship Troopers seem to be AWESOME for FS2. A sample for you;

That's the first 30 seconds of "Klendathu Drop", which I believe the full song fits FreeSpace2 to the T, so to speak. How exactly would I go about putting this in the game to replace stock music files? Or is it even possible? Even if I can't, I can always have it running in the background on loop mode, since my CPU is top-notch. Any help? Thanks in advance.

You can add it without replacing FS2 music soundtracks.

Simply open the music.tbl(you've to extract it using VP View first, you know)and open it with Notepad...copy and paste one entry(for example Genesis) somewhere in the table, and change the filename of the specific tracks you want to add(for example, Battle 1).

If the soundtrack is long and variable, you may create a completely new music.tbl entry.

Requiem for a Death is an example: the creator has separated different parts of the music file and created btl1, btl2, btl3, enemy arv, allied arv, death and goal sounds that work ingame.

Where, pray tell, can said music file be found?

The vp files in your FS directory.  Use Turey's Installer in my sig; deselect everything except for the tools, & install the tools.  This set of tools allows you to view / edit different FreeSpace / Descent files.
